Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Three – Day Three

If you happen to have a certain CR7 as your captain choice this evening, the chances are you’ll stick. Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace against Holland harvested a 20 point armband return, vindicating the 23% of Fantasy managers who handed him their vote in the Matchday Three, Day Two Captain Poll.

The other main protagonists failed to justify our faith, with Mario Gomez and Mesut Ozil bagging just an assist apiece in Germany’s win over Denmark. Robin Van Persie and Wesley Sneijder stuttered over the finishing line as the Dutch limped out of the tournament without a single point to their name. Time to assess the Group C options, then, ahead of tomorrow’s final matches.

Italy will be confident heading into their must-win match with Republic of Ireland. Giovanni Trapattoni’s have conceded seven goals in their two games thus far and arrive on the back of a morale-sapping 4-0 defeat at the hands of Spain. After a couple of back-to-back draws, the Italians know they must clinch a victory to stand any hope of progressing – Andrea Pirlo has had a hand in both their goals to date, while Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli will be desperate to break their scoring ducks. If Balotelli fails to shrug off a knee problem, Antonio Di Natale could come into contention, while Cesare Prandelli has also been talking up the displays of Alessandro Diamanti in training over the last couple of days.

Croatia will be reliant on Mario Mandzukic to maintain his sensational start to the tournament. The Wolfsburg man has proven to be an outstanding out-of-position midfielder in the McDonald’s game and has sparkled up front, finding the net three times already. Nikica Jelavic’s eye for goal deserted him against Italy but, as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers know too well, he’s more than capable of capitalising on a half-chance. Darijo Srna’s set-piece and spot-kick duties mean he cannot be dismissed, despite Slaven Bilic’s decision to switch him to right-back in the first two fixtures.

Spain shifted up a gear against Ireland after playing out a stalemate with Italy in their opener. Fernando Torres’ brace against Trapattoni’s men will see many target the Chelsea man as a captaincy option against Croatia, while David Silva has been their most consistent attacking performer thus far. The City man has hand a hand in four of his side’s five goals over the first two games and is another strong candidate. Andres Iniesta’s threat on the left of the attacking three can never be overlooked, Cesc Fabregas has notched in each of his appearances, while the creativity of Xavi is sure to provide plenty of opportunities.

Republic of Ireland have a final chance to pick up a point and restore some pride before flying home after tomorrow’s match. Trapattoni will be desperate to mastermind a result against his native country, though it’s something of an understatement to say the Irish are firm underdogs. Robbie Keane looks the man most likely, while Aiden McGeady’s creativity and Kevin Doyle’s role as a foil for Keane up top sees them come into contention.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

It looks as though as soon as a team is confirmed out after their 3rd game, their players are removed from the transfers page.

Does that mean that their value will not decrease?

If so, does that mean you are better waiting until you know the QF teams for definate, before transfering out the old players?

It means you have to be reasonably quick to sub in those cheap players (4.0) if you want to put out a strong team in the final rounds.

I don't think anyone really knows about prices changes at the mo.

    4.0, neuer
    Maniatis, alba, pique, debuchy, boateng
    cabaye, pirlo, schweinsteiger, 4.0, pilar
    torres, ronaldo, gomez

    0.2 left in piggy bank

my 4.0 are most likely not to play

Not bad although I wouldn't be sure of doubling up on Spain's defence. They're not great considering how expensive they are. Like the front 3 though.

I agree with you on spains defense being expensive, however they are a must have because they are very likely to go far in the tournament, I don't want to waste my transfers later on defence cause they most likely will rise in price to compound the fact we only get 6 FT 😛

So if Croatia win, Spain are out.

I did, yeah. It was a toss up between him and Gomez. If I went with Ronaldo, I'd have captained him and be sat in a very healthy position right now.

Shoulda, woulda coulda etc. I'm sure I've benefited from others making similar decisions in the past.

I know this must be incredibly tedious, but a couple of questions re; transfers/price rises

    1) Is there a certain time when the price changes occur?
    2) I've got Polish and Russian players in my squad, should I get rid ASAP to avoid losing money?

I've got a lot of Polish and Russian players, and if there's a mass transferring-out of these players, I'm assuming their price will drop and I'll be left with players who are a little cheaper than they were when I bought them.

That may or may not make sense. I'm doing absolutely terrible in this competition so I'm really in no place to talk about it!

Will Fortuounis play for the Greeks in the QF? Looks an ideal 4.0 padder.

I was going to do that keeper combo, but a bit pointless if they're playing each other

You will be able to tell how many active players there are in the game by simply looking at his ownership.

+1, they didn't look like a one man team either, superb going forward, if Nani wasn't so shite Ronnie could have had 5 or six.

20 down, 11 to go. Come the quarters two likelihoods, in my opinion:

    - Some teams will settle for scoreless or low scoring draws to take their chances in penalty shootouts. Will mean defenders averages should increase.

    - Points averages will drop with less and less games per matchday. Whereas each game has one or two big points hitters, the likes of Gomez, Dzagoev, Mandukic and, very recently, Ronaldo, you had the chance of a slightly improbable 11 fairly big hitters in your 8 game matchday. Now it will drop to 4, 2 and 1 games in your matchday with automatic substitutions in the final.

Well I've been messing for ages with my qf team and the only thing I've concluded is that having Gomez makes it very hard to get a decent team, even with some fillers so I've decided to give him a miss.I may regret it but I feel happier having a balanced side. 😐

Just looking at possible options with Benzema. Maybe go with Shwein in midfield to replace Gomez's German exposure.

You should be 🙂 ing. Benzema or Torres jif they tet there just as likely to get same or more points. High scoring pointswise midfielders at bargaintown prices can be lucrative too.

With the Germans playing Greece, is it not better to have Gomez, as Ronaldo plays a tougher game against Czech?

Midfield doesn't seem easy for the next round

Striker picks are pretty obvious and I can see enough decent defenders but mids hmm

Expect the Czechs to kick him, Nani and Pepe from Pillar to post to try and get them sent off. Cynical , I know, but it's all about the result. Could go to penalties. Germany won't destroy Greece either.

The midfield is looking maybe a bit too light, keepers, defence (annoyingly) and forwards are very similar to mine so overall I like it.

Words probably won't descrive how p*ssed off I'll be if either Germany or Portugal concede but it seems to be one of the most likely haul of points.
