Captain Poll – Matchday Three – Day Four

Three of the top four in the Matchday Three, Day Three Captain Poll picked up attacking returns this evening but, with six points the most Antonio Cassano, Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta could muster, many Fantasy managers may well be willing to twist.

With Spain and Italy now through to the last eight, tomorrow brings the final matches of the group stages. France, England, and Ukraine are all still in with a shout of progressing, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sweden have the small matter of pride to play for.

England need just a draw against tournament co-hosts Ukraine to progress to the final eight and will be boosted by the return of Wayne Rooney – Roy Hodgson confirmed earlier that the United man will start tomorrow, now that his two-match suspension has been served. Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll are set to tussle for the remaining forward slot after both found the net against Sweden, while Ashley Young’s contribution could be vital from out wide. Steven Gerrard also comes into contention after returning a pair of assists for his Fantasy owners thus far and Theo Walcott’s goal and assist display against the Swedes could earn him a start, after Hodgson revealed he is over his hamstring scare.

Oleg Blokhin’s side are still sweating on the fitness of Andriy Shevchenko. The former Milan and Chelsea man is rated as 50-50 due to a knee problem, though seems the man most likely to breach the English rearguard. Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko must step up their games from the wide positions if Blokhin’s side are to prosper – the duo have produced just one assist between them thus far. Marko Devic is favourite to step in if Shevchenko fails to make it, lining up as the lone frontman with Andriy Voronin tucked in behind.

A change of system against Ukraine saw Jeremy Menez come into consideration for France. With Laurent Blanc changing to a 4-2-3-1, the winger grabbed a goal and outperformed the likes of Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery in the 2-0 win – if he can maintain a role in Blanc’s first XI, Menez could prosper against a Sweden side that have lost both their opening matches. Karim Benzema saved the day for many Fantasy managers last time out by picking up a pair of assists – he has yet to find the net but, with plenty of creators surrounding him, tomorrow night could be the time to break his scoring duck.

For Erik Hamren’s side, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is always the lead contender. The Sweden boss has already ruled out Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm, meaning Markus Rosenberg is likely to lead the line, with Ola Toivonen on the left – both could be decent differentials, though whether they can breach a French backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far is another matter entirely. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity were crucial in the qualifiers and both have provided an assist apiece already.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I wouldn't rule them out, they've beaten Spain before recently. Spain like to walk the ball into the net and England have a good defense that can shut people out well. I think if they meet it might go to extra time / pens

I won a fair chunk of money backing an Italy clean sheet against Ireland. I was that confident of it.
Although, I normally would never back against my national team, I knew that they are abysmal.
For me I am embarrassed at the performances of are Soccer team. It was a team that was supposed to be built on defence tactics astuteness from corners freekicks etc!
I think that the Irish fans should have rioted instead of singing as usual!
Why? Because Ireland might of been banned from playing the next few years to save us watching that muck.

rubbish, agree with grom.. they were a shambles. im Irish and will back every Irish team up to now as they did as much as they possibly could but Traps tactics were wrong, given and dunne werent fit, and only andrews (aside from sending off) can hold his head high.. the greeks dont exactly ave world beaters but they all went about their business and did themselves proud. oshea played for united and he was kicking 5 yard passes out of play today for fun.sorry but i can find nothing to be proud of after this tournament and I agree whole heartedl with Keane.

The point was that Irish team was supposed to be set out be defensive. That is how they qualified. Yet they conceded 9 goals in the tournament.
Ireland are now the proud holders of the worst record in the Euros ever. It's embarrassing anything else is not telling the truth.

Ok the last part was slightly tongue and cheek about rioting, but it would save the shame of having to see a team play like that.
I mean it was ok to suffer the terrible football they played in the qualifiers to get there. The ends justified the means. But in this tournament we had terrible football, plus terrible results.

As an Irishman myself I can't really agree with much of what you've said.
Admittedly the tactics could have been better, and McClean, Kelly, Clarke, Westwood, Gibson and Long should have been used.
But we're a limited footballing side and to get to such a stage is a credit to the management team and the players themselves. Ok, we didn't set the world alight, and our performances were mediocre at best but if you cant be proud watching our boys up against teams like Spain and Italy then you have no place being an Irish fan.
Stick with the team through thick and thin or don't comment at all.
      Good day to you sir.

So let me get this straight as an Irish fan I should have been proud the team got walloped in three games conceded 9 goals and score 1?
As an Irishman I am supposed to ignore the dire performances and accept that the Irish team is immune from any real criticism?
I do not expect Ireland to be world beaters, however to be that tactically inept and defensively naive is shameful.
The very least expected from an Irish team is that they battle.
Instead the Irish team rolled over like a dog to be tickled in their tummy and everyone says awh look at then.

In hindsight Ireland fluked qualification and were extremely lucky in qualification and in the draw to get a poor Estonia side.
Of course in your view I should keep my mouth shut...and silently accept, complete and utter shambles.

Football in Ireland needs to change from top to bottom. The chief executive of the FAI earns a higher wage than the prize money for league winners. We need to stop fannying about playing Hungary and Bosnia in friendlies and start playing the big teams because that's what we're going to face.

The manner of defeat, the Croatia game in particular was unacceptable but realistically what did we expect? Best team in the world, a top 10 team and four time world champions. We didn't qualify because of Trap, we were played off the pitch by Armenia, Slovakia and Russia in every game but they didn't punish us because Dunne or Given did something. It was because of them we qualified, when they couldn't pull off a miracle we were f*cked.

Theoretically, it's better to invest more players on the CZE-POR and GER-GRE games because they're easy to predict. High chance for a SPA-ENG and FRA-ITA, these are tough predictions and may not be high scoring games.

I suppose I better stick with Cassano.

    Karim is tempting me, though.

Me too! Although so far I've gambled on Day 4 twice with 2 successes out of 2.

      And Sweden's defence looked vulnerable...

First time I've seen Balzaretti play tonight, and wonder why he didn't play over Giaccherini until now, he is much better
    Can see a return to 3-5-2 v France/England with....

    Buffon
    Bonucci DeRossi Barzagli
    Maggio Marchisio Motta Balzaretti
    Pirlo
    Cassano Balotelli

I have went with Podolski instead of Gomez as i have had Podolski from the start. Is this too much of a risk?

Almost everyone playing seriously will have Gomez and for a good reason. Podolski may be a nice differential but too risky for me.

I'm certainly not get carried away, but I have not seen a team that England couldn't beat if they have a good day. I doubt we will win it, but there is nobody to fear, just plenty to be wary of..
