Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Three – Day Four

Three of the top four in the Matchday Three, Day Three Captain Poll picked up attacking returns this evening but, with six points the most Antonio Cassano, Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta could muster, many Fantasy managers may well be willing to twist.

With Spain and Italy now through to the last eight, tomorrow brings the final matches of the group stages. France, England, and Ukraine are all still in with a shout of progressing, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sweden have the small matter of pride to play for.

England need just a draw against tournament co-hosts Ukraine to progress to the final eight and will be boosted by the return of Wayne Rooney – Roy Hodgson confirmed earlier that the United man will start tomorrow, now that his two-match suspension has been served. Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll are set to tussle for the remaining forward slot after both found the net against Sweden, while Ashley Young’s contribution could be vital from out wide. Steven Gerrard also comes into contention after returning a pair of assists for his Fantasy owners thus far and Theo Walcott’s goal and assist display against the Swedes could earn him a start, after Hodgson revealed he is over his hamstring scare.

Oleg Blokhin’s side are still sweating on the fitness of Andriy Shevchenko. The former Milan and Chelsea man is rated as 50-50 due to a knee problem, though seems the man most likely to breach the English rearguard. Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko must step up their games from the wide positions if Blokhin’s side are to prosper – the duo have produced just one assist between them thus far. Marko Devic is favourite to step in if Shevchenko fails to make it, lining up as the lone frontman with Andriy Voronin tucked in behind.

A change of system against Ukraine saw Jeremy Menez come into consideration for France. With Laurent Blanc changing to a 4-2-3-1, the winger grabbed a goal and outperformed the likes of Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery in the 2-0 win – if he can maintain a role in Blanc’s first XI, Menez could prosper against a Sweden side that have lost both their opening matches. Karim Benzema saved the day for many Fantasy managers last time out by picking up a pair of assists – he has yet to find the net but, with plenty of creators surrounding him, tomorrow night could be the time to break his scoring duck.

For Erik Hamren’s side, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is always the lead contender. The Sweden boss has already ruled out Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm, meaning Markus Rosenberg is likely to lead the line, with Ola Toivonen on the left – both could be decent differentials, though whether they can breach a French backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far is another matter entirely. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity were crucial in the qualifiers and both have provided an assist apiece already.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

And so we enter endgame for England versus Ukraine and for the group stage as a whole. Ukraine have had the better of it so far and enter the last matchday 11 points ahead, mostly due to roscola's ineptitude. Misplaced faith in Russia and Poland and lack of faith in brylcreem was not particularly unusual but has been particularly damaging to the England campaign. Drinky had no such faith issues. He has matched the magnificent Mac with a majestic 62 each for the gameweek and so it ain't over yet. Excitingly, England and Ukraine have several different interests in tonights games. The differences still to play:

England: LLoris, Lescott, Nasri, Ribery and Rooney
Ukraine: Debuchy (x2), Young (x2), Benzema

England, much like their real world counterparts, will be tying their hopes to the match-rusty trotters of young master Wayne. Meanwhile Ukraine will be hoping that their real world counterparts can silence those oinks but fall prey to the Olympic diving team. In the other game, a French clean sheet would help Ukraine but midfield splendour would turn the tie in England's favour. More twists and turns than Tulisa's tongue.

    Game. On.

      It is tough.

If you go with Benzema you need him to score just to stay at the same number of points, and to get a a second or an assist if you are to better your score.

Don't go with Lescott unless you're certain of the clean sheet - even then you need something else RB points or goal/assist to beat your score.

That's what I'm thinking. One goal and Benzema is on the same points as Iniesta then anything else is a bonus. Sweden have nothing to play for so it could be an open game with plenty of chances.

Taking the defeat well I see. What about (forget who it was) the guy with the glorious chance after some brilliant work by Modric with about 10-15 minutes to go? I think you should've had a penalty, but you still created your chances and didn't take them. That's why you're out, unfortunately.

cs and RB that means 4pts from defensive mid, sometimes odd assist or goal. Assist from huge Iniesta worth 9.5m is worth 5 pts. Where is the better value. There aren't any explosive mids which I want to captain. Defenders are on 7pts now adays. It will be closed games from now on. The number of CS's increased in the quarters.

U might see someone here interesting who went with 5 at the back

Not a fan of conspiracy theories I'm afraid. Bad decisions go against all teams but Barca/Spain tend to dominate matches and have 70+% possession so it's hardly surprising they get more decisions for than against.

Nothing against you personally, just get tired of the "oh, it's a fix" brigade coming out every time a big team wins something.
