Euro 2012

Scout Notes – The Final

So much for boring. Slated for their displays in the lead-up to last night’s game, Spain silence the critics and produce a masterclass to sweep aside Italy and storm to victory in the Euro 2012 final. Jordi Alba, Xavi and Fernando Torres are the main protagonists for Fantasy managers as the 4-0 win proves just a step too far for Cesare Prandelli’s side.

Spain 4 Italy 0
Vicente Del Bosque made just one change to his first XI for last night’s game against the Azzurri. Cesc Fabregas returned to the first-team in the “false nine” position, with Alvaro Negredo dropping to the bench. Spain’s backline once again produced the goods and picked up their fifth successive clean sheet – their defensive unit proved incredible value over the tournament. Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas earned an extra point for recovered balls and saves respectively to end on 35 points, the same tally as Alvaro Arbeloa. Gerard Pique finished with 37 points but it was Alba who stole a march on his team mates – a brilliant 14 point haul boosted his total to 46, far and away the best in the competition.

Xavi created five goalscoring opportunities and produced a couple of assists last night. Having failed to pick up any attacking points in his first five, the Barca playmaker was the least popular of Spain’s starting midfielders heading into the Italy clash but proved to be a relative differential; a nine point haul was second only to Alba. Cesc Fabregas’ assist and David Silva’s goal helped the pair to six and five points respectively – along with Xabi Alonso and the back five, they represented eight of Del Bosque’s players in the McDonald’s “Dream Team” for points accrued. Fernando Torres needed just 15 minutes to get amongst the points, with a goal and assist near the end ensuring a fairer reflection of Spain’s complete dominance. Finishing the tournament with three goals and an assist, El Nino grabbed the Golden Boot despite starting just one of his nation’s six Euro 2012 fixtures.

Cesare Prandelli made a single alteration to his starting lineup, with fit-again Ignazio Abate replacing Federico Balzaretti at right-back. The Italy boss had rolled out a 3-5-2 for the Group C game against the Spanish but last night maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation that had seen the Azzurri concede just one goal in the previous three matches. Fate seemed to conspire against Italy early on, with Giorgio Chiellini limping off after only 20 minutes on the clock and Prandelli’s personnel woes continued in the second half. Having made his full quota of substitutions, the Italy boss was left with just 10 men on the pitch after Thiago Motta was stretchered off with a hamstring injury only four minutes after replacing Riccardo Montolivo.

Under the cosh from start to finish, Italy were a major let-down for those Fantasy managers who invested heavily in their assets. Many had picked up a variety of Italian options as an all-or-nothing option but the 4-0 defeat meant it didn’t quite go to plan. Their most popular Fantasy option, Andrea Pirlo, provided a couple of goalscoring opportunities and fired three attempts at goal but his only contribution was an extra point for recovered balls as Spain hounded him out of the game. A three point return boosted his total to 29, leaving Pirlo as the highest scoring midfielder in the McDonald’s game – along with Mesut Ozil and Pepe, he was one of three non-Spanish players in the overall Dream Team of Euro 2012.

I would like to see Henderson, O'Neil & Taylor do well since their ex-Pompey. They seem to have the best squad of the 3 for me.

Also, I hope (but don't expect) West Ham will go straight back down. Nothing against them as a club but that self aggrandising fat headed git "Big Sam" really boils my piss.

Yeah, I understood it to be a decision made by the SFA, to protect its independence in the face of ongoing pressure to merge as UK FA. NI players not in it because there's none considered good enough, which still seems a bit controversial.

Still, as I keep saying, football has no place in the Olympics.

        Definetly

        Rhodesm Forrest & Russell

        Probablies

Goodwillie, Wilson, Hanley, Bannan & Mackay-Steven

Then you have overs like McGregor & Naismith who should be there over Ballamy & Richards.

The team is hardly dripping with class as it is. And if you want to be true to a Great Britain team you should have representation from all 4 countries. I thought we withdrew from it but apparently not. It's a token gesture tournament anyway. Team GB in a footballing sense has no credibility and will not have a future beyond the London games.

      Its ridiculous.

Looks to me like Stuart Pierce ignored the peace making part of the job and picked the "best" 11, without properly scouting the Scottish or NI U21's.

Why he has picked Micah Richards I don't know, he is a great player but with Kyle Walker in the team why are we wasting an over 23 spot on that position? McGregor should have been picked.

Anyone tempted with Welbeck over Rooney for the start of the season, Fergie doesn't tend to rotate too much early on so should be nailed on. United cover is essential in GW2-4 but price constraints will make it hard to fit so many big names players in eg Rooney and Aguero. Kagawa could cause a problem to this however.

Not really. Welbeck was the main man last season to partner Rooney when fit. Only want a United attacker until GW4 so could gamble on Welbeck for those, see Kagawa as a bigger threat if Fergie decides to play Rooney up top with Kagawa behind.

It depends if United will play all 3 of rooney, welbeck and kagawa in the same formation. Watch preseason and it should give you an idea. I am going for kagawa though if he is around the 8m mark as he should get plenty of assists and goals.

Yes, some Brighton fans thought we would go up last year.

With the quality of other sides and so many of them still having the advantage of Prem bail out payments, it has to be the most difficult to get promotion from.

At least ten will be seriously looking to get promoted each year at the start of the season.
          imo.

You managed to extrapolate a deeper meaning to my factual inaccurate analogy - I didn't even think of that. Yes, I would accept Kagawa could explode at any moment, much like a teenager watching Baywatch for the first time.

    Hi All.

    Doing well i suppose?

Now that i have won my first Cash league, time to move on to the FPL. Few friends and i have developed an exciting format where you basically pay the most if your bottom and earn the most if your top, hence you are competing for every position.

    CANT WAIT.

Afternoon all. With the distractions of the Euro's now behind us I am looking forward to the season ahead. A forward line including KUN and TORRES is already looking to be a popular punt for many on here (myself included). Other players that are making up the back bone of my draft team are NANI and CAHILL.

The pre-season tours offer much in the way of tips for the season ahead, and it will be new signings and the players from the promoted teams that will be particularly interesting to follow. It will also be interesting to see how some of the underperfoming players of last season start off their pre-season (particularly the likes of N'ZOGBIA).

In summary, relieved the Euro's are over so that the real business can begin:-)

With Luiz at the olympics Cahill is a good option for the start but once Luiz is back he wont see as much game time so Terry/Ivanovic would save a transfer later on. Nani is a risk with Valencia/Yong and now Kagawa competing for spots, if you decide to go that way how about Mata/Hazard > Nani GW2? Nzog is on my watchlist!

Won't Kagawa be challenging up front along side Wellbeck and Chico? Reckon Nani is worth a punt, depending on values Mata/Hazard may be the better option though. N'Zog could be a bargain, Villa's tour of the US should give us some good clues on their player options.

Kagawa will push Rooney up front so will indirectly take Welbeck's/Cheico's spot. He plays left mid for Japan so that's also an option but I doubt SAF will put him there.

Well, the Euro's were brilliant. Although my fantasy team was not so hot.

I won my main mini league with friends, but they all did really badly. Should have put some money on it. I finished 57,974 😳

The Auction leagues were fun when doing the bidding but everyone seemed to lose interest once the cup started. However, I did win 2 of them, and came 2nd in the Euro Pro's, only after a late run from Declan (well played) so I can't complain.

Team of the cup for me (in real not FF terms):

    ----------------Casillas
    ----Alba-Ramos-Pepe-Lahm
    ------Pirlo-Khedeira-Dzagoev
    ----Ronaldo-Balotelli-Iniesta

I won't be around much for a few weeks, enjoy your summer lads. Bring on FPL & The Championship KRO.
