Scout Scribbles – Laudrup Snaps Up Taylor Replacement

Swansea sign a new left-back as a replacement for the injured Neil Taylor. Abou Diaby is a worry for Arsenal after sustaining a muscle injury, Seb Larsson is keen to cement a central midfield role for Sunderland, while West Ham admit Andy Carroll is set to be sidelined for Saturday’s trip to Norwich:

Michael Laudrup’s search for a new left-back ended yesterday with the news that Dutch defender Dwight Tiendalli has signed for Swansea until the end of the season. The new boy spoke to the club’s official website upon completion of the move..

“I’m looking forward to working under Michael Laudrup, who is a massive name in football, and showing him what I have to offer. I’m sure I will fit in very well because I share the same philosophy as the club. Having started my career in Ajax’s Youth side, I see the style of play here is one that has a real Dutch and Spanish mix, and that will really suit me. I can’t wait to work hard in training and try to force myself into the starting XI.”

The move now raises real question marks over the acquisition of Ben Davies as a cut-price route into the Welsh club’s defence. With regular left-back Neil Taylor out for the season, Davies was pencilled in as a possible transfer in ahead of (EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next five Gameweeks but with Laudrup bringing in his own man, it’s a case of wait and see with this one. If Tiendalli can nail down a regular role, his price across the Fantasy games will be eagerly anticipated.

Still in the Swans’ camp and Laudrup has again expressed his surprise at the red card dished out to Chico in the 2-2 with Sunderland, admitting that both he and the player will need to adapt to English referees..

“I think if Chico made that challenge ten times, given the place where he was on the pitch, nine times he would get a yellow card with only one red.He knows that he went high with his leg, but I know he did not do it to hurt the opponent…Chico is aggressive, but that is like a lot of the players over here…Chico was shocked that he got sent off and then he was shocked again to get a three-game ban, because that’s different too…We are all learning every day, and that’s a good thing.”

Chico will be missing from Swansea’s next two league matches as he serves out his ban – opening the way for Alan Tate to slot into the defence as his likely replacement. Like Davies, Tate could tempt short-term investment – he is priced at 4.0 in the FPL, with Sky Sports making him available for just 3.6.

Abou Diaby is out of France’s game against Belarus later this evening. The national team coach, Didier Deschamps, admitted:

“Diaby took a bad shot and he has muscular discomfort. He is not free in his movements.”

The news is a real worry for Arsene Wenger, given the midfielder’s recent form. The opening three Gameweeks have quickly shown just what a fully-fit Diaby can bring to the Arsenal first XI, with Alex Song’s departure to Barcelona quickly forgotten. Given Diaby’s injury history, it’s impossible to speculate with any sort of certainty here – any possible absence is likely to benefit Aaron Ramsey or Francis Coquelin in the double-pivot alongside Mikel Arteta.

Wenger received some mixed news concerning his forwards yesterday – Theo Walcott is out of England’s game with Ukraine due to sickness, while Olivier Giroud is fit for France after recovering from a muscle problem. Yet to find the net this season, Giroud has been transferred by just over 1,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of a home game against Southampton, while Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski have received a combined 93,000 – highlighting just how little faith we have in Giroud right now. According to the Frenchman, it won’t be long before he’s amongst the goals:

“I’ve been freezing up a little bit just when I’ve been about to pull trigger and that’s exactly what happened in my first few matches for France. I’m not too worried about it, because I’ve been scoring in training and I feel pretty comfortable being a part of this team. I just need to not think about things too much, so that I feel as relaxed as possible when the time comes to stick the ball in the net.”

Paul Lambert has a selection dilemma at left-back on his hands for next Saturday’s home showdown against Swansea after summer signing from Middlesbrough Joe Bennett revealed he has returned to training. The Villa boss handed Eric Lichaj the chance to impress at Newcastle in Gameweek 3 but with Bennett recovering from an ankle knock, he may reassess the situation, with the midlands club still to register a clean sheet this season.

Jonny Evans has allayed any injury fears after earlier reports suggested he was a doubt for Northern Ireland’s match with Luxembourg this evening. The centre-half revealed he has shrugged off the ankle problem picked up early on against Russia on Friday:

“I have only played one reserve game for United this season after having the surgery in the summer so, to be honest, it was just good to get back on the pitch. But I felt my ankle after about five minutes. It was the same one I had surgery on in the summer but I got a heavier strap put on it and I was able to carry on for the second half. I was disappointed I felt pain so quickly in the game but if I am being honest, I always expected I would feel a little pain – just not that early. After a couple of painkillers it did feel a bit better and if anything I felt stronger as the game went on, but like I say, I had a heavier strapping on then.”

Evans’ return is likely to hand Sir Alex Ferguson a defensive quandary for the visit of Wigan next weekend. With Rio Ferdinand fit to start alongside Nemanja Vidic for the previous match at Southampton, United had a natural pair of centre-halves for the first time this term, having previously relied on Michael Carrick to drop back from midfield. Vidic, certainly, looks nailed-on as a first-choice option but Evans and Ferdinand could well cancel each other’s potential as Fantasy prospects if Ferguson decides to rotate them. Ferguson did, however, indicate that he was looking to establish stability in the centre of his defence, suggesting that Vidic and Ferdinand will be given the opportunity of sustained starts, injury permitting. The right-back position could still be profitable for Fantasy managers: Phil Jones and Chris Smalling both still sidelined, Rafael’s potential as a cheap route looks appealing, though it’s still unclear how much his manager rates his defensive qualities ahead of trips to (liv, new, che) in the next six.

Seb Larsson has admitted he is keen to establish himself in the heart of Sunderland’s midfield. The Swede has switched to a central position due to the arrival of Adam Johnson and is more than happy to continue there:

“I’ve really enjoyed it there. All three games so far I’ve featured there, the two Premier League games and in the cup. It just takes a bit of getting used to. I played there a lot when I was younger. But it’s a position that I will hopefully play a lot more. I think it can be fun. There’s a bit to learn about positioning and when to hold it a bit more rather than going forward. I’d like to see myself as being able to dictate the play rather than bombing on all the time.”

Larsson’s delivery from the flank was a real selling point from a Fantasy perspective and while a move away from a wide position should limit his potential for crosses, his set-piece duties came to the fore against Swansea last time round. With the predatory Steven Fletcher installed up front, Larsson still provided an assist for his 7% FPL owners, drawing him level with James McClean on eight points.

An article on West Ham’s official website indicates that Andy Carroll is unavailable for selection ahead of the club’s Gameweek 4 trip to Norwich. The club gave a couple of hints on the player’s problem with the following two comments..

“While the manager will have to make at least one change in the striking department…While Andy Carroll continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury….”

Both statements certainly indicate Carroll is out of the Canaries match – a real blow for Sam Allardyce, with Carlton Cole looking likely to be installed as the focal point in the Hammers’ 4-3-3. With nothing definitive on the length of injury, Allardyce will be desperate for a quick return for Carroll – the next six Gameweeks affords his side home games against Sunderland and Southampton and trips to Wigan and QPR. The Hammers could well be in a position to prosper, though whether Cole’s presence will have quite the same effect as Carroll’s is perhaps debatable.

After all, it's only the first match. They will play a good team in UCL but not their best team and will play their best team when Madrid visit Manchester...

Not sure - I think just a general discontent with the emergence of template teams.

The defence looks fine to me - Baines plus cheap options is a viable strategy right now until United, City, Spurs sort themselves a bit. Davies is a risk but I think he'll start at Villa. Tate is more secure for the next two so you might want to go with him and be sure of two starts to change in GW6.

Rest of the side looks strong - but like I say, a familiar template and similar to many out there. Not really a fair criticism and there's certainly no need to be hostile towards anyone who opts for such players. It's not a case of copying others, it's a case of going with form.

By the way, I don't think Yaya is an amazing fpl option or 'essential' (whatever people choose to read into that - noone is literally essential) but he's definitely worth his price and people dismissing him as a 'defensive midfielder' have obviously never watched him play or looked at his stats.

The lad is often described as a natural goalscorer (which really means he adds little value to most teams playing an outdated role aka Defoe). But that doesn't matter for FPL. He won't play every game and has a poor injury record. Does that matter as long as you have a 5th mid you are happy to play? He will be an impact sub. Pillow suggests otherwise and can ou really see Pullis keeping him on the bench. I don't think so - I think if fit he starts. 5.5m is a bargain and is the extra cash saved on a Ba or Fletcher or Berb which allows a Tevez -> Ageuro switch (or whatever takes your fancy). 20 games at a good PPG and I think Owen would prove to be a bargain. Thoughts?

If Owen plays 20-30 games this season he will score 10-15 goals IMO. The BIG question and risk is that will he play 20-30 games and will he stay fit?

Owen hasnt played consistently for the last 5 years, so not sure i would bank on that changing this season.

He could end up being the steal of the season.......but he may not.....big risk imo, if i wanted to save money i would opt for Pog.

owen will play the same position as walters
but walters can run forever while owen is very fragile
      so not guaranteed starts
      not guaranteed even to play
and the last time he had a run of 10 games he had the likes of mark viduka, geremi and alan smith on his side

      no thank you

Might sound a bit stupid with this! Was drawing comparisons between RVP and Tevez. Both have competitions from fellow star strikers in Rooney and Aguero. Both play under managers who like to tickle their teams every now and then. Both get decent supply from some real good midfielders and both are absolute quality goalscorers.
So, this brings me to my question,
If I had to pick ONE among Tevez and RVP, who would it be?? 🙂

MESSAGE FOR FORCA INTER (or any Croatia expert)

Help me out on the trim of the Croatia football shirt. The one I bought on holiday in Dubrovnik has yellow trim, instead of blue, on the collar/sleeves. She said it was the colour of the away strip (or was it the home strip, or a previous season's?). But then, she also said I looked like Daniel Craig.

Have I been mugged or can you let me know which shirt this is?

    Cheers

Let's not get petty about all this. The frustration that others are getting on board with form players is fair enough but, as mentioned in the original post, if you've benefited from their original points then there should be little concern.

There is a clear template right now - up front and in midfield. I'm guilty myself of covering it to a certain extent having got Michu and Hazard with my previous two transfers. The price rises are partly to blame - these drive people to these players, not just because they are in form but because they can see a 0.6 jump in two weeks. This can really sway folk who may well be considering holding to a differential - it certainly did me.

The template will break up though and new differentials will emerge - Bale and Adebayor are prime candidates to start delivering soon and then we'll see the established squads break up a bit to try to cater for their form.

To those who are frustrated by the template teams they're seeing - let's have some tolerance - going with the form players with big price hikes is not only valid but a sensible option right now - if you've already benefit from the points and price rises, I really don't see room for complaint. The good judgement you used to make those early decisions will give you the edge in a few weeks time when things get shaken up a bit.

This is what happens when they give us international breaks, two weeks to mull over the same results, players and form, resulting in frustration over everyone posting the same WC teams. One week is hard enough to get through, two weeks with no new data is too much for us poor addicts.

People are aware of how this game works, right? The players who score the most points are the ones people want for 2 reasons - on a basic statistical level they are more likely to score more points and their value is going to increase as people get them in. I'd have transfered Michu in week 1 even if I thought he was terrible just to get the price increase. If you look after your team value for the 1st 10 weeks you have an extra 6m to spend on players which is a massive help for the rest of the season.
You know the wildcard exists why moan about it? If people are wildcarding and getting your players then your value is increasing which is a good thing. Players scoring highly at the beginning of the season are right at the top of overall points table so everyone sees them and buys them. I had a reasonable team but needed Van Persie so I now have a WC template team too but it will still be changed around each week and if you were clever enough to get all these players with no WC then you're already 100 points ahead of me. If you want hardly any transfers then go and play Sun Dream Team

Yep. I've a template team too, in the main. The sad thing being the players I most want out now are the ones that could act as differentials - I only just rested the temptation to play the WC to get them out. It's a symptom of the early season form, the WC and the break. It will sort itself out though.

totally agree..i dont see where the argument is with this. there are 40 teams in one of my leagues...i think two teams got the same GW score in wk 3..everyone has differentials somewhere..they are the most important players. I have Hazard, RVP, and Tevez (tevez from the start). got michu in after first week. I wildcarded to get RVP in. the sad thing is that no one can really get that excited about these players getting big scores because everyone has them

so stop all this silliness, anyone who just copies WC teams doesnt really know what they are doing anyway and will be found out somewhere along the line.

well my purpose for coming on here was to see if there was any information about the kagawa injury, as it was i spent a few minutes scrolling through a number of pointless arguments so decided to comment on it

Commenting on it doesnt fix the problem though. It just adds to the pointless posts.

I would suggest that you press control & F, then type in Kagawa. That will help you find the information you want, without having to read useless information.

Sorry you feel like that. The frustration always boils over the break and there's always a view venting and fuelling that.

At least it's giving me plenty to go on when it comes to enhancing the comments system. Threads will look very different if/when we can get my plans implemented. If you don't like a comment, vote it down, too many negative votes from unique users with good rep and it gets hidden. That will change the landscape somewhat.

If there is a rep system, it will be unseen/hidden and rep changes (up the levels) will need admin approval. In this way, there will be no exploits where users can group to earn rep. That's my current thinking.

Both Jenkinson and Mert are on shaky ground - both could be out within a matter of weeks, despite the form of Arsenal's defence. Kacaniklic is another risk - shake up of Fulham's formation and lineup is expected and he could be bench fodder.

Start the season with relatively cheap defenders then shift the balance to the bigger hitters later in the season. The stats back this up - promoted teams start well in terms of clean sheets then fade, the big teams start poorly and improve. Year, after year, after year...

Go for it-it's very different. early on difficult as players unfamiliar but you get in to it and it's pretty tactical-remember to sub out/ change capatain before next kick off. It's only the final that's a bit of a waste of time but otherwise quite an enjoyable game and breaks up the week!

    Lambert.

In his next 3 he plays Arsenal and Everton away. If on a WC, is it worth holding off? Not that many strikers around 6 appeal to me. Thinking of going for Pog and playing 3-5-2 some weeks. Maloney looks great value in midfield.

Yeah which is why i am considering going for Pog and playing 3-5-2 some weeks. Maloney is playing very advanced, has some decent fixtures and is on corners, free kicks and pens (as long as Gomez stays on the bench)

Interesting. There is also the argument that Lambert will do 'bigger' against teams who are expected to come and break down South. Because then Lambert's ability as a counter attacking direct poacher is brought to the fore.

This is opposed to when they come up against the likes of Wigan who counter themselves and specifically mark Lambert.

It's just a theory and The Dom-Bastic does feel the jury is still out.

Yeah I see how that could be confused. My point being he is the figure head of others good work.

Whereas arguably Graham makes the space for Michu. Graham has become the person who has the best view of all Michu's goals. Sky should stick a camera on his head!

I can understand fellow posters annoyance at everyone essentially having the same team. Have always suggested a bonus point structure should be brought in to benefit people who have picked players in who then get those juicy points!

IE If you had Hazard, for every 100,000 people that bring him into there team, you get a bonus of 5 points.

I argued a few season's back that, if you get a player who rises in price very early e.g.: Hazard for GW1, then you should get more than 50% back on the resale should you choose to sell. For me, that would recognise the good initial judgement.

As an example, I actually think those who get Hazard now have an advantage in some respects. If he gets a two-week injury, they are able to replace at no or a small price loss. Those who bought in GW1 will be very reluctant, would hold due to price loss and be at a disadvantage.

Yep, it was Malouda for me, the season before last. I got him in initially, caught his early points then held for far too long over his dry spell due to a huge price loss. Those who missed his first couple of GW's were able to cash him in on loss of form and make more money.

RVP will be that guy this yr for all those who have got him at 13. After this week Utd go through a tougher spell.

Problem being if I got rid of him for 13.2, no chance I could afford the 13.4+ in a month when from November he has a tasty run of 10+ games. So imo anyway, we are forced to hold onto him (which maybe a blessing because he can score when he wants)

Your idea is simpler than mine. But it would stop people moaner quite so much if they feel they are getting the just deserts for there initially punts.

Are they really making more money though?

            If I bought a player at 10m, he rose to 11m, I sell him at 10.5m, I made 0.5m

Someone else buys the player at 10.5m, he rises to 11m, they sell him at 10.7m, they make 0.2m.

But if you have bought him late you are left very exposed to a loss of form (unless you ship quickly) as each 0.1 drop is a real 0.1 drop whereas those who have bought him in early can afford two drops for each 0.1 in real terms. I was guilty of this with Drogba a couple of seasons ago and you tend to hold another week as you knew he was capable but his form fell away.

I don't like Jelavic, personally, I would try to get Adebayor, maybe by going with a cheaper keeper? Jenkinson/Bertrand are also risky because neither is going to play very often, once Sagna is back that is.
