Moneyball – Ricardo Vaz Te

In a new series of articles for members, we explore those unfashionable, unwanted and unexciting players who don’t necessarily come with You Tube clips or Armani ads but deliver that all important quantity which drives the “Moneyball” strategy: comparative value.

The term “Moneyball” found its way across the Atlantic for many with the arrival of John Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group added Liverpool to their holdings list alongside Henry’s great pride: the Boston Red Sox. Henry’s Red Sox failed in a bid to hire Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s and chief proponent of the so-called Moneyball strategy but, using Beane’s approach to player acquisitions, went on to deliver their first championship in 86 years. Henry’s attempts to replicate his success on Mersyeside by applying certain principles to player analysis under Damien Comolli failed to have the desired effect, however.

Despite popular opinion, the lessons of Moneyball do not start and end with saving money or looking for one particular attribute in players, but rather looking for players discarded by the wider market, either because they succeed in an uncommon way or because they do so in a particularly unfashionable manner.

Given that most Fantasy managers spend a large portion of our money on just a handful of players, we, too, are forced to invest for value at the bottom end of our squad and in that arena we have to accept imperfection if we’re going to achieve success. Finding the right assets to fill the budget gaps in our squads can prove vital; the Moneyball series is here to help – to investigate the lower end market and attempt to find diamonds in the rough.

Using the Moneyball concept and the data available to our Members, we’ll attempt to identify and analyse players who perhaps appear “imperfect” solutions but, in fact, offer strong potential for those with limited funds.

    RVP: could be rested
Tevez: stoke no pushover at britannia
    Hazard: derby game who knows
Cazorla: saints have conceded 8 in 3

yes I think I will make Cazorla captain for a day

A LOT of weak links in this team, I know. But I'm determined to avoid the wildcard until after the (possibly) harsh winter. How's this lot set up this week?

    Foster

    Cole - Rangel - Hangeland

    Noble - Hazard (V) - Pienaar - Bale

    Van Persie (C) - Graham - Tevez

Indirectly, yes. The game launched on the night I turned legal. I cam home and drunkenly set up a woeful team. However, I became slightly attached with some of the awful players and kept them in my team for GW1 and thus my rank was hurt.

Just notice that blasted N'Zog went down in price again last night!

Unless there was a rush of transfer action between 12 and 3 last night, total FPL must have been a bit out, watch out if you're leaving it close, not worth the risk.

    Oh well it's only 0.1 I suppose!

I especially like the part when Derby County moves up the rankings. I'd like to see myself move up the rankings in FPL similarly.

    Kagawa Bale(vc) Guthrie Michu
    D Cisse RVP(c) Tevez

    Mignolet Demel Maloney Clyne

Cheers, Scouts. I'm late in reading this but it is a fantastic article.

Here are my comments from across the pond.

I live in Boston and I'll state right out that Moneyball does NOT work in pro-sports! Oh it will work perfectly for Fantasy Football, but not in real life.

Nobody ever mentions that the Oakland A's won with Moneyball because they had three of the best pitchers in all of baseball at that time (Hudson, Mulder, Zito). Any team with three top pitchers will do well....oh, and saying they did well is OK but they did NOT win the championship....they simply reached the playoffs.

It did not matter that the Sox didn't get Billy Beane because we do spend money and we don't use that Moneyball system. I'm not saying that it won't work at Liverpool either, as Brendan Rodgers seemed to be doing well at Swansea with that type of system. At Liverpool though (as in Boston) the expectations are higher.

In Fantasy ball though I definitely have used this system for all of my 7 years now: Cheap Keepers and Defenders...2 or 3 studs in MF...1 or 2 studs up top. That system gives you 4 or 5 good Captaincy options every week, and then you just need to find the diamonds in the cheap ranks.

That's where this site comes in handy all the time. Reading the message boards here helps me find those great values (P.S. I've never done an RMT and I've been here since the start of the site).

    Thanks again, Scout Boys.

I won't get into a baseball discussion here but it's missing the point somewhat to say the Red Sox don't need Beane because they spend the money instead. Well yeh, but Oakland don't have that option. Same reason United can sign the likes of Bebe without missing a beat while if Rodriguez and Ramirez flop at Southampton they will likely get relegated and could struggle to even pay the bills next year (I don't know Southampton's particular finances but you take the wider point).

Moneyball is often mislabelled as some crazy computer-stats approach to baseball, but it's bigger than that. It's looking in unexpected places for value which absolutely can, and has, been used in pro sports. Bolton did it under Allardyce, the Tampa Bay Rays are doing it now, Oakland are having success again, the Oregon college football team are doing it (not pro, but close). I'm not sure there's much evidence that Liverpool are following this approach at all. They're looking at stats more but 15m for established Premier League players is hardly radical thinking. Sam goes for last season's efforts - Adam, Carroll, Downing etc

Good reply, Chris. I too am not looking for a baseball discussion here, and don't get me wrong on several points:

The Red Sox do spend money but they do need to be cautious, wise, practical with their dough.

Don't you think every single pro team in every sport is doing that already: Crunching numbers and looking under ever rock to try to find great players for cheap prices? You'd think that most other GM's would be insulted by that idea, but I totally hear your points.

Oh, and by the way, at least half of the payment for Bebe went to the agent that brought Cristiano and Nani to United....it was basically a "thank you" transfer.

        Cheers.
