Spot The Differential – Gameweek 4

As we all emerge from the hibernation of international week, I’ve decided it’s time to justify my status as Scout Contributor by dusting off the typewriter and picking up the Differentials again this week. We have a little bit of everything this time – we’re running the rule over an old Fantasy favourite, a youngster set to make his first start and another Belgian import who may well be primed to make his mark at Goodison next Monday…

Dimitar Berbatov

Here’s a player that would surely have been essential last season had he nailed down a regular starting spot is ex-Manchester United striker. Dimitar Berbatov – seven goals in just 521 minutes of football meant he was involved in 50% of the United goals scored when on the pitch. As the Premier League’s top scorer in 2010/11 and the first United striker to hit three hat-tricks in a season since Ruud Van Nistelrooy, it’s no surprise that clubs were queuing up for the Bulgarian hitman’s signature over the summer. After flirting so precariously with Fiorentina, Berbatov caught the train from Manchester airport to West London at the last minute and now that he’s back in the Fantasy mix, we’re jumping on board before rush hour hits.

Despite losing two key players in Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey, Fulham will still fancy their chances this season and Berbatov, Mladen Petric and Hugo Rodallega will all have a big part to play. Of the three it is Petric that has had the most immediate impact but there is no denying the explosive potential of Berbatov. If he can get anywhere near his goal scoring record from the last few seasons with United, then we can expect his current FPL ownership level of 2.1% to rocket. Priced at 6.9 and 7.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively, he offers a decent option as our cheap third forward slots this weekend.

Ben Davies

An injury to Neil Taylor brings the young Swansea left-back firmly onto Fantasy radars. While many had assumed new boy Dwight Tiendalli would be installed into Michael Laudrup’s first XI, the Dane confirmed earlier this morning that Davies will take his place for the trip to Aston Villa tomorrow.

While Laudrup admitted the 19-year-old is unlikely to nail down the role over the entire campaign, at present Davies looks firmly in the driving seat over the short-term, at least. Priced at 4.0 in FPL and a mere 3.6 in the Sky Sports game, he offers a cut-price route into a backline that has conceded in just one of their three fixtures thus far. With three home matches in the next four after this weekend (EV, RDG, WIG), Davies, with just 0.3% FPL ownership, is an intriguing option for those Fantasy managers looking for a defensive alternative over the next few Gameweeks.

Kevin Mirallas

As a real punt, we’re heading to Goodison to pick up one of Everton’s summer signings. Today’s news of an injury to Darron Gibson plays a significant part in our thinking – with the Irishman sidelined for “two to three weeks” due to a thigh problem, Marouane Fellaini may return to central midfield, affording Mirallas a role in “the hole” behind Nikica Jelavic. David Moyes may even decide to roll out a 4-4-2 for the visit of Newcastle on Monday evening and Mirallas – priced at 7.5 in FPL and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game is a real differential to consider, with just 0.3% ownership in both games.

Yet to begin a league game this term, Mirallas has been eased into the fold with a couple of sub appearances but highlighted his potential with two goals and a pair of assists in a sparkling debut, as Everton racked up a 5-0 Capital Cup win over Orient. His acquisition won’t come without risk but if he starts, as we expect, the potential for points against an injury-hit Newcastle may even see him outshine the more popular Jelavic (9.6%) in the final match of the Gameweek.

Given the UCL group they are in, I wouldn't be surprised if they rotate with Dzeko / Balotelli also rotating as the second striker alongside them.

I'm on a WC, and I reaaally want a Tottenham player.

Is Tevez necessary? I was thinking about cutting him for Ade, then bringing in Aguero once he's fit.

    Stupid?

I'd keep Tevez. Spurs haven't hit form yet and it's risky to bet on their attacking assets, especially with the new players / formation still in the air.

I'm ashamed to admit the only FF game I've finished was XIII. I think I was cursed until then. I lost a disc for VII, VIII was cracked when I wanted to play it (my brother's copy he left me) and my XII game data got corrupted...

I liked IX as well, but again, never finished :/ maybe I'll DL it on my ps3 one of these days. FIFA is an addiction atm lol.

I definitely finished IX, and FFVII, don't think I finished VIII as I wasn't all that into it. VII is by far the best game ever made. It came out pretty much when the first Playstation came out and I pretty much spent my life playing it for about a year solid. I even made the guy in my grav's 'theme tune' my first ring tone. This was back when you could actually make your own ringtones...before they realised what a fortune they could make out of it!

I think I played FFX briefly but after that I lost track of it all so never played the ones that came after. Nothing will ever beat FFVII for me.

The best thing about VIII was the card game... I absolutely loved that, except when you went to another part of the world only for the bloody rules to change to random...

I learned very quickly to save my game before I played cards, cos I hated losing the good ones...

I did absolutely everything in that game... there were so many secrets that people never even knew about... I got all of the ultimate character weapons...

I successfully bred a Golden Chocobo, I defeated all 3 of the weapons (Ultima, Ruby, Emerald)... the list goes on...

The Sephiroth, Zack, Cloud storyline was one of the est ever written IMO...

Tevez is good value, other than last season, he's regularly scored 20+ goals per season (09/10 and 10//11), and other than Arsenal, City have good fixtures until (che) in GW13.

    What to do lads?

    De Gea, Jaaskelainen

    Zabaleta, Clyne, Williams, Cashley, Ferdinand(QPR)

    Kagawa, Yaya, Noble, Bale, Guthrie

    RVP, Graham, Tevez

    0.0 in bank

Thinking zab - 5.0(ridgewell, gibbs etc) and bale - haz for a hit? Thoughts? cheers

No. Thinking Zab - 5m this week and Guthrie to Maloney or Kagawa to Cazorla next week. Bale will come good soon.

yeah not sure about the hit eh, cause if he scores ill kick myself, and the n the playing coming in has to have a blinder. What 5.0 you like the most? rafa, ridgewell, mcuely, gibbs?

Ridgewell mate, nice fixtures and knows how to score (albeit occasionally). Forget this week, you just need to hope Bale keeps up with Haz long term and I reckon from her on out he will. You need to swap Kag since you have VP but I also don't like you having both Noble AND Guthrie in there.

Any chance of helping me out on my earlier post this page?

cheers, yeah its an issue. no good value mids for that price atm, team needs a wc lol. not a fan of those 2 keepers but if you need the bank i can see why you did it. Mildy rsiky mid but those forwards will make up for it.

toying between a def lineup of:

Don't like Rafael or Jenkinson to be honest. Rafael has a shocking run where you wouldn't expect many cleansheets, and Jenkinson will lose his spot in 2-3 weeks. Is there another 5.0 defender you could slot into b)? Ridgewell maybe?

I posted twice before but still not made up my mind:)
    Mig
    Cole Zab Williams
    Guthie Kaga Yaya Dyer
    Bent RvP Tevez

    Fed Noble Mc Cartney Cuellar
1transfer and 2.3 in the bank.

I had three reasonably good weeks but every new on is a challenge.
No transfers at all and make decisions next week. The obv kaga> Haz
Or a bolder take hit and Transfer both Bent n maybe Noble out for improving midfield.

Right now Im actually thinking of not transferring anyone, wait with bandwagon (only thre matches have been played:P and have big clean up next week:)

    @Dimpressive

I forgot how ridiculously camp FFIX was. It also seemed a complete rip off of the Wizard of Oz, there was a big tin man with no heart. Also come to think of it I think Zidane was a girl and the whole thing was basically a weird Shakespeare play...then again I seemed to like it at the time. Think I under-rated FFVIII because I was still to busy with the first one. Funny that I was obsessed with Final fantasy and now I'm addicted to Fantasy football...I don't seem to like real things.

I have long outgrown my Final Fantasy days, and there were many of those days...

It certainly doesn't stop me from reliving those memories, and when you find someone else who shared the same interest, it's almost impossible not to want to talk about it...

Let him enjoy this one, RCA... 🙂

It was a little bit quirky, but that added to it's charm...

But since it's been over 15 years since I've played any of them, I have to say it (IX) is the least memorable...

Therefore it pales in comparison to VII and VIII...

Also, the music in VII is probably the best music from the series...
