The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Everybody Hurts

It didn’t take long. As the template squad took shape over the international break, it has taken just one day of Gameweek 4 for it to show cracks.

The script seemed very unlikely. Robin Van Persie rested. Carlos Tevez withdrawn on the hour mark. Eden Hazard and Michu traveling home empty-handed. Santi Cazorla delivering just a single assist amongst an Emirates goal glut. Form was on their side but today’s failure of fancied “big guns” offered a rapid reminder just how fickle Fantasy fortunes can be.

To compound matters, some notable differentials stepped up. Dimitar Berbatov delivered on his full debut. Steven Fletcher scored his third goal in two games. Gervinho tempted us with a brace as the Gunners ran riot and, in the same match, Lukas Podolski notched his second in consecutive matches. We just need the likes of Gareth Bale and Nikaca Jelavic to break the shackles and we’ll have real movement; real discontent amongst the pack who threw Wildcards at the two-week break only to find the humblest of returns at the end of the rainbow.

It was inevitable that the cast would be extended, that we’d have new names to add to our watchlists and edge their way into our thinking. The failure for the early season form players will doubtless spark reaction – the pace of Berbatov’s bandwagon will be interesting and likely to be fuelled by those looking for an immediate fix to a hugely disappointing day.

Of course there should be faith that class will win through, that today’s events will be a rarity, but the timing is poor. Having procrastinated and tinkered over the break, the expectations were high and that will doubtless find knees jerking and cats kicked. For the majority, it’s been a day to forget but then perhaps we got what we deserved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Striker is most important position to get right as that's the position you should get most points from. Graham is poo so get rid.

Yaya is a solid 140 points a year mid. We don't know what Kagawa is yet.

Yaya less likely to be rotated than Kags.

You also have RVP so no need for Kags and his rotation risk on top of that.

Sterling is 17 years old. His body will not stand up to a 38 game season and Rodgers knows this . He will have no choice but to rest the lad soon.

Kacaniklic is not guaranteed starts in Fulham's midfield.

Guthrie is guaranteed gametime and on set pieces. Considering this is bench fodder you are talking about Guthrie means you always know you have points coming off your bench in an emergency.

I have Guthrie and consider him as my rotating mf with Maloney so I play him every other week.

Sterling is a great prospect and just a shame my club sold him during the Briatore era, but I would have concerns about how much gametime he will see over the course of the season baring in mind that he is still a kid, literally.

If you want Sterling get him.

But bare in mind he is only 17 and ask yourself how many games you think Rodgers will ask a 17 yr old to play in a 38 game season against grown adult men?

Just another dissatisfied poster ranting away with his thoughts...

I keep telling myself that I have the right plan to move forward, with WC intact, using only free transfers in order to shape my team the way I want it over the course of the next 4-5 weeks, but these continuous substandard GWs are testing every fibre of my belief...

After 2 depressing weeks waiting around looking at a potential WC facelift on the transfers page, it seems that this week's atrocious score has only served to intensify an already itchy trigger, a dissatisfying scratch that I've been feeling to improve my team now...

Honestly, I'm observing that my enjoyment is slowly waning from this game and I need something to reignite my interest levels...

Then you should go for it imho.

This shouldn't be a chore. Rather something to enjoy. Although it can pain you at times and make you cheer against your favoured clubs/players. I knew I was saving my wc for later this year. Still did it two weeks ago 🙂 Gave me something to fiddle with during the break.

If remember correctly I played my WC in GW4 last year too after a very similar situation, I am determined to retain it until much later this year, and I could still... I just have to decide to let go of these bad weeks rather than dwell on them, and also whether or not retaining my WC now will provide me with more benefit later on with any potential DGW's...

        Thanks...

If you feel its that bad then wildcard. Thats what its there for.

My only gripe is that 3/4 gw's is not a lot of time for proper patterns to emerge, so often people who wc in gw3 go on to have a bad week and now want to wc all over again.

I never wildcarded last week and took an 8 pt hit to get RVP in for Torres, Hazard for Bale and Maloney for Kagawa. I could very well end up being slightly worse off than if I had just kept it at my one free transfer which was the Bale to Hazard one on the first night of the last GW.

I would have been mortified if I'd have used a wild card last gw as I would have used it solely really to get RVP and Michu in my lineup.

In your case, if that's what you want to do then do it. No point playing the game if you are not happy.

I dunno what your team is.

8 pt hit is really the limit for most FPL'ers although some on here will draw the line at 12 pts. Anything over that and really you are better off wildcarding.

Do what you feel is best for your team.

Just looked at your team, it is really not that bad. I think it will come good in the end. Just get rid of Graham for someone better this week.

Last year I had a shocking start for no apparent reason and after 10 weeks I was over 100 points behind the mini league leader and ranked 1.7m. I ended up slowly whittling away that lead and it came down to the final day of the season ( I just missed out by a few points!) and ended up ranked inside the top 10k. It was a really enjoyable challenge trying to come back.

Yeah Graham to Lambert is a transfer high on my list... but objectively, it seems that is somewhat of a luxury transfer right now, when I know that Graham is definitely starting and has 3 good home games in the next 4...

I think I have to address the DDG problem first, then maybe Zaba... and once Graham's fixtures dry up then I'll kick him to the kerb...

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I always love to hear inspirational stories like that... 🙂

It's the combo I would choose if I was wild carding! GKs are the best place to economise as save points even things out even if there is no CS, although both of those are capable of CSs as we have seen. Plus you can rotate them so that you usually get a reasonable fixture.

Yeah, cos RVP never produces in the tough games.

And, of course, Rooney will play up top and RVP will have to drop into MF.

But you'll have to rest them every other week or take a good few two pointers against good defences.

RVP is fixture proof. If anything tougher fixtures mean he's more likely to play.

I get that he's expensive but you have to spend the money somewhere.

Out of form and Hughes has preferred AJ and Zamora.

I agree with you and I hope that Cissé starts next week. I also think that we need one of Hoilett or Taarabt starting every game. None of the mids Hughes plays are genuine goalscoring mids and we will need to start scoring and creating more chances soon if we are going to win games.

DDG, Zab and Graham really are the only problems I can see.

I will quote the words of Billy Ketsu above as they apply perfectly in this instance:

I'm in a similar position, and what Nomar says is valid...

I would like swap out up to 7 players, but it is only "absolutely necessary" that I have a certain starting goalkeeper and a certain starting defender, which means for you what it does for me...

I really only need to swap DDG and/or Zabaleta to have a decent team for next week... your team is very similar to mine... you could even just do DDG to Foster and hope Zaba starts v ARS, and if not Clyne is more than capable of getting a CS at home to Villa...

I'm sure just having Foster for his good upcoming run of fixtures will help you see your team differently... and I realise by looking at my own problem from someone elses perspective has helped me justify my own options... 🙂
