Scout Report – Matija Nastasic

Roberto Mancini returned to his native Italy on transfer deadline day to plunder Serie A club Fiorentina for the services of Matija Nastasic. The highly-rated centre-half moves to the Etihad for an undisclosed fee, with Stefan Savic moving the other way as part of the deal.

In his first interview since joining the club, the 19-year-old Serbian spoke of his determination to quickly adapt to his new environment.

When I started to play in Italy I needed some time to adjust, for sure. But I’d made an extra effort to limit this period of change to a minimum and I’m hoping to do the same in England even though the style of football is different from Italy.

The Statistics

Nastasic’s career began in Serbia in the 2009-10 campaign when he was loaned out to at FK Teleoptik Zemun by parent club Partizan Belgrade. The centre-half went on to play 21 times over two seasons for the lower league side but he failed to make a single first-team appearance for Partizan before they sold him to Fiorentina in 2011. Nastasic – nicknamed “the new Nemanja Vidic” – turned out 25 times for the Serie A outfit in 2011-12 and also found the net on a couple of occasions – he featured in the club’s opener this season before Mancini came calling at the end of August.

The Prospects

Although there’s no such thing as a nailed-on City defender aside from Vincent Kompany, Nastasic’s prospects are perhaps not as bad as bad as many fear. First of all, the six foot one defender is more than familiar operating as part of a three-man defence; the majority of his appearances for Fiorentina came within such a system and with Mancini utilising a 3-4-1-2 as a tactical alternative this term, he offers the champions greater mobility at the back than the now-departed Savic.

Also, the club’s Champions League schedule may help him domestically. A group that pits City against Real Madrid, Ajax and Dortmund is unlikely to see Mancini take any chances at the back – given his penchant for rotation, it may well be that he keeps Nastasic for league games as he eases into the first-team fold, with home clashes in particular, a better source of game time. A berth on the left of the three, with compatriot Alex Kolarov on the left of midfield could help make the transition a little easier; Saturday’s game at Stoke saw three of Mancini’s four summer signings handed a starting role, suggesting there will be plenty opportunity to stake a claim as the City boss utilises his squad around the European schedule.

At 5.5 in FPL and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, Nastasic is relatively cut-price amongst the City backline but his acquisition – like the majority of his defensive team mates – will always carry a degree of uncertainty. Mancini has already been quick to rotate at the back – only Kompany has started the four league games so far, yet Joleon Lescott and Gael Clichy both still have over 10% ownership in FPL. Mancini’s next few team sheets should give us an idea of his thinking and certainly if Nastasic earns some starts he could be a real punt, though the risk of rotation will no doubt deter the vast majority.

    WC Team draft 2:

    Jussi/Begovic

    Baines Hughes Ridgewell Demel Nelson

Michu Hazard Bale Ben Arfa Yaya

    Podolski Tevez Berba

This is the team without RVP, my only issue is picking a team to play could be difficult..

Sell ben arfa for Nolan maybe and upgrade defense. I would prefer:-

      Hughes–> Riether(Fulham)
      Nelson–> Barnett

said the same before, saying the same now

I see your point, but Hughes to Riether is a sideways transfer, why would I do this for more money?

Nelson> Barnett, 3rd sub, not really worth it.

    Morning,

I have 0.5 spare to spend on transfers this week and don't really fancy taking a hit (team linked), what would you do?

    A. S. Taylor -> Naughton this week and Graham -> Fletcher/ Berbatov next week

Newcastle defence is plagued by injuries, Naughton will have home games against Villa and QPR over the next 3 GWs if Assou-Ekotto really is out for four weeks.

    or

    B. Graham -> Lukaku this week.

Lukaku has better upcoming fixtures than Berbs/ Fletch and could be the next bandwagon.

I love Lukaku but it is quite the risk. Shane Long may continue to start as the lone striker with Lukaku as an impact sub. I'd wait for him to start the game but sometimes you have to roll the dice.

I was just about to post about that... I wonder if a solid performance from Mannone might oust Szczesny for a bit, that flap against Soton was pretty bad, and Mannone would have a right to be a bit peeved being dropped at the weekend after doing well against Stoke and Liverpool.

With BAE out for around 4 weeks, what do you think to Kyle Naughton (4.4) for the short term?

Next 6 games (possibly BAE will miss all these as he'll have to get match fit again):
QPR man u VILLA CHELSEA southampton WIGAN

I see 4 decent games for him to play there.

Not sure. I have Cuellar so looking for a sub 4.5 replacement but I dont think Spurs will keep a singe clean sheet in that run except against wigan (by which time BAE could be back). As I already have Hangeland and Demel, the best options I can see are Clark and Nelsen.

It depends on your definition of a clean sheet. For some people it's when a team doesn't concede a goal in the course of a game. For me, a clean sheet is when a goalie, defender or midfielder concedes no goals while they're playing a game and they play 60+ minutes.

The reason I'm getting rid of Giroud though apart from the fact he's done bugger all, is that I dislike Arsenal's fixtures for the next 2. So Podolski would be a strange move for me to do...Jelavic I'm strongly considering.

Afternoon lads, looking for some advice.

I want to get rid of Zabaleta and Marveaux from my side. I'm looking at Gibbs to replace Zaba, and Sterling to replace Marveuax. Given that Gibbs has City away this week, and 3 of my other defenders have good fixtures, I was thinking of doing that one the week after this. So would you do Marv -> Sterling, Zaba -> Gibbs, or save the FT this week?

    Hi guys!

Would you consider Cazorla->HBA for a two week punt if you had 1 FT? Then obviously getting Cazorla back for GW 7. HBA doesn’t play in Europa this week and could do some damage in the next 2 GWs.

Furthermore, just general constructive advice on my team (especially defence) is greatly appreciated.

I like your team. Obviousy Jenkinson will have to go soon, and I hear there are (temporary?) doubts about Cuellar. The Cazorla to HBA back to Cazorla move is appealling at first, but it ties up your fts for a while and you might need them to address your defence. If you think Jenks/Cuellar will hold up 'til GW7 then do the double switch.

    Afternoon all.

Unfortunately my laptop died on me last night after many years of service. Has anyone got any advice on a good laptop to get on a budget of £400?

Currently considering Acer Aspire V3-571 or HP Pavillion DV6

    Cheers

Not sure of the sub £400 models but look on amazon at Samsung laptops - they are exceptional value for such a high regarded brand, have had one for the last 2 years and has been great, never had a problem.

I had an HP Pav DV5 and it used to get very hot and the fan became loud after a year- it conked out after about 3 years. I tihnk this was a common problem.

I would google troubleshooting/ problems for any model you are thinking of buying so you know what to expect

    Foster [RDG]
Mcaually [RDG] Baines [swa] Vertonghen [QPR]
Hazard [STK] Cazorla [mci] Michu[EVE] Morisson [RDG]
Tevez [ARS] Jelavich [swa] Lambert [AVL]

subs – begovich, pienaar, demel, jenkinson

1 – thinking of saving a transfer – should i, or are there any good suggestions?
2 – thinking of a sneaky Morrison or lambert for captain – good idea or play it safe with hazard?
    3 – subs in order?

Great team. Amazing how much you can do without RVP. Captain Hazard or Tevez. Would start Pienaar ahead of Michu. Rest of subs are fine.

actually, most weeks above average score is not enough - since the series players averge is higher - however i suspect that this week good players scores just as bad as casuals since many big guns were silent (RVP/michu/hazard/etc)

It's not a bad score, just lucky with H2H opponents.

I've got a very similar score and I've been hammered in one v a guy who has Paul Scholes in his side and the other I'll probably lose in FFS UEFA due to Ciaran Clark's CS and BP's!

Well Giroud (C) worked out a treat. At least I transferred in Bale!

Hoping for Jelavic and Baines to come good tonight against Newcastle.

All aboard the Berbwagon for me after flirting with my French flop for one week.

    Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

Got 2 FTs this week. Already done DDG -> Foster, and am considering Kagawa -> Hazard for the other, but would prefer to wait until after the European matches for a bit of insurance against injuries.

Is Hazard likely to rise, or is Kagawa likely to fall before then?
