The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thinking of doing Michu -> Fellaini.... before he rises this morning.

Anyone wanna talk me out of it? Chasing points or good long term investment?

Fellaini seems to be playing alot further forward this year, and looks very dangerous, whereas Swansea's good run seems to be over.

      Point chasing.

But I'm just trying to convince myself not to take Fellaini. 🙂

I'm deliberating the same move. But Michu's next 3 look better than Fellaini's next 3.

Point chasing is aiming for somebody who has scored points but that scoring those points was basically luck or fluke due to rotation.

WHen you do it GB? Tonight?

Here's the stats summary for both players this season in the comparison tool:

        Michu: 30% -- 3+ (key areas)
        Fellaini: 70% -- 6+ (key areas)

Seems Fellaini is a differnet player this year. Could be cynical and say he's playing to catch the eyes of the a bigger clubs next season.

I think he will continue to play up top, as Moyes continues to complement the way Everton are playing in every interview. And i think Fellani will get far more points than Michu in the next 3, and certainly beyond. A good move imo.

Just clicked the WC button, I've got a tough decision whether to keep HBA and Ba for next week now, and what to do with the Pienaar/Fellaini situation. I can't have both surely?? And is Nolan worth holding onto? Also, RVP/Aguero or do I stick with Tevez, WC is probably a good time to make these big decisions, I don't know if I have it in me right now! It's tough to let go of Tevez and if I let him go it'd be a bit silly to get him back any time soon wouldn't it? Would lose the .3m and all.

I can see Aguero's comeback triggering a huge rise for him, possibly even .6m in two weeks regardless of how he plays!

You should only really have one of Pienaar/Fellaini and you can't really make a call on the others you have mentioned till tomorrows games. Just keep an eye on price rises and falls and try to stay on top of it. Don't trade out players you want to keep or who may rise.

that's an invonlutary touch by the defender and by the rules of the game as referred before when a situation like this and the one that happened with mirallas assist wich is bouncing of the sticks the assist will be given to the player that made the last pass.

This is correct, in essence Mirallas assisted himself as the last everton player to play ball before goal. Similar to winning a penalty and taking it yourself.

Long however should have got the credit for the assist, strange day all round by fpl - berba ppi crazy!!!

Not to bore you but been mulling over transfers. Squad currently is

    Jaask (Federici)
    Baines, Ivanovich, Cuellar
    Hazard, Michu, Larsson, Dembele
    Rvp, Tevez, Berbatov
    Nobel, Hangeland, Clyne

    £1m banked.
Thinking Dembele -> Sterling this week.
Get Cazorla or Podolski next week for Larsson or Tevez.
Get rid of Ivanovich in 2 weeks.
Really need to get rid of Federici but I hate using a trannie on a budget gk 😐

So how about it, anyone for a Sterling bandwagon? 🙂

Would like some opinions on my first WC draft lads. I believe this is gold,

    Foster | Jaaskelainen
    Rafael | Clyne | Vermaelen | Baines | Barnett
Yaya Toure | Fellaini | Nolan | Michu | Hazard
    Podolski | Berbatov | Tevez

I'd dump Rafael. Smalling is back soon and United's fixtures are horrible. And in any case you've got 2 premium defenders you'll probably never bench, so then just pick 1 to play from the remaining 3 budget defenders with the best fixture.

I'd be tempted to ditch Michu on a wildcard. Great fixtures but Swansea look appalling in recent games and could easily slide into the relegation dogfight if they don't get their act together.

I think it might be too risky because like we saw against West Brom, it's still possible for them to draw blanks, saying that, their fixtures are quite appealing and if you were going to have both now would be the time, especially with Jelavic out. But a lot rests on these two and it's not really likely they will both be firing every game.

Interesting to see the Berba 3 BAPS. Im gutted as i dont have him but nearly did, but interesting to see a non-goal scoring payer get the points. Makes a change from the pathetic system of just giving them to the goal scorer that prevails 99% of the time.

Haven't seen the Pienaar assist yet but if the ball hit the bar and came back to Mirallas then I would assume no assist will be given. I'm not saying I agree but that would be my understanding as it happened last year or the year before with some guy I had in my team.

Cheers BTBB, going ok before today!. I don't normally get involved with these controversial decisions but it seems by earlier replies were not met favourably. Best of luck to you. Cheers

Is it worth getting fellaini now just in case he rises in price tonight. Or is it better to wait just in case HBA and Santi get injured tomz? Have 0.1m in the bank so I could cover an increase.

I had gone to bed, but I need to be hands on with the WC.

    - currently thinking of losing Pienaar, with Fellaini and Baines. Loading up on one attack is a trap I've so often fallen into so many times. There's plenty of other teams to cover too. Shame as Pienaar should do really well.

    - I'm thinking of including Bacary Sagna in my WC. Should be back any week now and he's a bargain.

I have Baines and just hit the button on Michu -> Fellaini. One supplies the other it seems, and when Everton are hot these players are all involved.

I wouldn't get Sagna until he starts playing. Just reserve the funds and plan the swap with an interim form defender (West Brom, etc...)

I'm thinking just going for Gibbs and downgrading to Sagna as soon as he's back. I'm going to find it hard to part with Pienaar, Fellaini is looking brilliant but he was somewhat lucky today, handballed assist/goal after Swansea were down to 10 men. He's definitely getting into the positions right now but I'm just not sure if he's better value than Pienaar long term.

All the talk over Berba/Fletcher/Lambert and each of them deliver. Could it be long before we drop one of Tevez or RVP for a second mid priced striker?

Crickey mate, thats a bit hard out. Although with rotation threatening both Tevez and RVP its not the worst idea.

Difficult to get RVP back in though, I'd have thought.

This is the same RVP that scored a sublime hat trick the other week. The guy is the greatest FPL machine since Ronaldo.

Tevez is also in the same bracket.

I had him in for a bit when wildcarding, but liked my whole team a lot better when he wasn't there.
I'm sure there will be weeks when people say SEE you should have him, but thems the choices.

I want Fellaini. Is Hazard to Fellaini and Defoe to Aguero a decent double move? Assuming of course Aguero plays this weekend/ or is confirmed in line for a return next week.

    Foster Federici
    ACole Lescott Hangeland Demel Clyne
    Hazard Toure Michu Noble Britton
    RVP Tevez Graham
    1 FT 2.4
    A) Hangeland or Lescott > Baines
    B) Britton > Pienaar
    C) Graham > Fletcher

I NEVER knee jerk. But I was planning in getting in lambert for graham in GW7. Should I just do it now to avoid the price swings. I would be gutted if graham goes wild against RDG, WIG though.

I am seriously also considering just going with one big hitting forward, and rotate berba with a southampton mid or maloney.

I like my mid and defence better with two cheapish strikers. Virtually no rotation to panic about either.
