The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Tough one...Kags is generally a good pick, but Man Utd's fixtures looks tough. Obviously Baines is a must at this point

    berba in for tevez

Frees up plenty of funds - plus both are a little more rotation proof!!!

I've got 6, possibly 7 players I want to change.

Federici, Zab, Cuellar, Marveaux, Graham, Torres, (possibly boyce).

I should hold tight and just do the changes over a few weeks, with maybe a couple of hits, rather than WC. Right?

This is what i have my eye on:

        Juus, Begovic
Baines, Big Verm, Gibbs, 4.5m, 4.5m
        Bale, Carzola, Barfa, Pienaar, Ramirez/Lallana
        Tevez, Lambert, Berba

I would rotate southampton mid and berba
I could downgrade Big Verm and get aguero for tevez

        Thoughts

Hmmm, difficult one. Problem will be price rises/falls may scupper your plans over several weeks and you start compromising your squad due to price,.

For me it's two choices. Do it now and get the team you want, or Hold out for the 2 week break GW7-8.

Right, logging off now. Nighty night.

      I had similar situation:

Wanted rid of Fed, Tierney, Boyce, Cuellar, Johnson, Dyer, Guthrie, Torres and then wanted to get the likes of Cazorla in, Tevez to Aguero as a differential pick so I hit the button.

Feels good, glad I've done it, fell 70 points behind in my main league today, team needs a desperate revamp before I get cut adrift.

I watched today's match, he looked really impressive and do you not understand football? Hazard is only 21 too....... I think RDM rates Hazard only slightly more than Oscar. I think the gap between the 2 players' scores by the end of the season def won't justify a £2m+ diff in price.

Hazard will start 90-95% of league games for Chelsea, whilst i`d be surprised if Oscar gets over 20 starts. He`s clearly talented, but im quite positive that Hazard will outscore Oscar by atleast 50 points, and to me thats definitely worth it.

By rating I meant in terms of handing out starts (should have clarified). Even I regard Hazard in much better terms compared to Oscar, but FPL wise I reckon Oscar is the bargain finder's gold whilst Hazard is someone who will deliver on his current price at max but def no more (it's rare anyone tops £10m anyway in mid). The difference will defo not be worth £2m+ imo.

        Do you watch football Psychobingo?

Oscar had a greater threat than Hazard today (backed up by the numbers, 41 - 16) and he's a year younger than Hazard (are you assuming Hazard is 26 or something? I don't get it.)

Oscar had a rest after the Olympics but he's played 2 in a row now and seems to have license to attack, at this point we've no reason to think he'll be any less a part of a team than the other midfielders that RDM seems willing to rotate.

Yes, i watch a ton of games. Oscar got to play the entire game today, whereas Hazard had a poor showing and only got 60 minutes, He`s also started every game this far while Oscar have seen two 30-min subs before the Juve game. Hazard clearly was fatigued today as a result of this. Agewise theyre both born in 1991 (googlw ftw so i dont have to assume, thank you).

And yes, i agree with you about the latter part. The difference is RDM wont be willing to rotate Hazard unless he absolutely has to. Moses/Oscar/Mata/Ramires/Sturridge and eventually Marin will rotate. Hazard will play.

            "cleary fatigued"
            "subbed off after 60min"
"won't be willing to rotate Hazard"

I think he might just do that with a squad all gaining fitness.

Regardless, we don't know BUT Oscar was the most threatening player on a pitch shared with Hazard twice in a row now, we know the reasons he didn't play at the start of the season, and he comes in under £8m.

            That's why he's interesting.

Plus he really *did* miss a lot of games at the start, and Chelsea have CL now. I'm waiting to see how things are looking in a few weeks after the fixtures clear up. There are so many great options in midfield now that there's no need to rush on a risk like Oscar currently is tbh.

Tbh you have to think of it this way, Oscar + Bale vs Hazard + Morrison. Surely now you see the immense appeal of Oscar? I'm not letting the extra money I make rot in the bank, I'm buying another heavyweight in midfield instead.

They were horrific today! But Barnsley generally can't buy a win away from home. Just can't rely on the league. It's only slightly better than League 1 for betting.

Having said all that, Blackpool should win.

I'm going to get Fellaini, but can't decide who to be replaced.

Michu ... stk, RDG, WIG, mci, CHE
Barfa ... rdg, MUN, sun, WBA, liv
Hazard ... ars, NOR, tot, MUN, swa

Michu > Fellaini looks perfect swap as Swan seem to lose form, but his fixtures are the best.
Anyway, Hazard has the most difficult fixtures. It seems a good timing to get him out too.

Help please. Who would you replace?

Jenkinson & Hazard > G.Johnson & Fellaini is what i'm thinking, what ya reckon?

Will have to see how Liverpool and Johnson look tomorrow but their next 3 games look very nice (nor, STO, RDG) particularly from a clean sheet perspective. Would leave me with:

    Begovic(SWA)
    Baines(SOT) Rafael(TOT) Johnson(nor)
    Cazorla(CHE) Fellaini(SOT) Michu(sto) Sterling(nor)
    Van Persie(TOT) Berbatov(MCI) Tevez(ful)

Hi SD.. I just posted above on how to get Fellaini in my team and now considering Michu vs Hazard too. Johnson played quite advance and had many chances created / shot. It could be a good move.

Btw, what's the reason you choose to get Hazard out instead of Michu?

Michu has Reading & Wigan coming up, both at home and i shall be keeping him until then at least.

It was really between Hazard and Cazorla. Also because selling 1 of those 2 raises a hell of a lot more cash than Michu!

Cazorla has better fixtures in hands and seems to be more important in Arsenal game than Hazard. I would surely keep him until we know better if he is gonna be Fabs or Modric.

Thanks for sharing the thought. I'm so reluctant on Michu vs Hazard.

Yeah that fact that Cazorla seems guaranteed 90mins most every week is a massive plus and like you say he seems to be more vital to Arsenal. If he looks decent tomorrow i'll likely keep him.

I'm liking the Johnson transfer more and more. His clean sheet potential looks good (you couldn't really hand pick 3 better teams to face in the next 3) and he's another defender with attacking potential to add to Rafael and Baines.

Probably wont train with the first team for a week or so, maybe even two. Then hes gotta get fit. I`d give Jenkinson atleast 2-3 more games before Sagna`s fit. Remember, he`s been injured alot over the past couple seasons, theyre probably not rushing to get him back, especially with Jenks performing pretty well all things considered.

This is the team that i am working towards. It will take 6-8 transfers to get there. But none are majorly urgent, apart from to avoid price shifts. Am I ok taking my time with this, rather than using my WC?

    Juus, Begovic
Baines, Big Verm, Gibbs, 4.5m, 4.5m
    Bale, Carzola, Barfa, Pienaar, Ramirez/Lallana
    Tevez, Lambert, Berba

I would rotate southampton mid and berba
I could downgrade Big Verm and get aguero for tevez

Front 8 is pretty weak, Torres/Graham/Marveux dragging you down. That said, id just start at the top and get rid of Torres. Idk. My team was poor pre this weekend and i pulled the WC.

Problem I see with doing it slowly is in the meantime the players you want to oust will continue to score badly most likely and on top of hits you're probably going to lose out on a lot of points. If you're already behind in leagues and don't want to slip further back I'd go for the WC personally, was why I went for it.

Also a WC allows you to play around a bit with more than just the players you want rid of, allows you to totally rejuvenate your squad, eg. Aguero over Tevez as a massive differential.

Yeah i also agree with this. Whenever Fulham get something, Berba seemingly is going to be involved. My tactic is to have two rotating cheap mids, not to say that this is the best option, i just feel alot more comfortable having a 4,6 guy sitting on my bench than the £7m star of a decent team with pens in his locker. But, to each his own.

I`d just do the latter if you can afford, hits for defenders are generally a poor idea if you can field 11 without it. Also they have the Birmingham derby next gw, dont really see a clean sheet there.
