The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To all those who advised me to start Gibbs and Graham over Clyne and Puncheon... feck you... but not that it mattered anyway because I was smart enough to NOT follow your advice. 😆

So when can I expect to see this Puncheon assist be awarded as a goal?

I see bonus has been added, and still no Pienaar assist. Has there been any further news on this matter?

    Cheers in advance.

Probably a few shots off target, it seemed like West ham bombarded Sunderland's defence all game really, I'd say that led to a lot of negative points for him perhaps.

Ye I saw it earlier, bookmarked it and had a look. Very handy I must say. I think I'm a bit blinded by the cheapness of Jussi and Bego to consider anything else though right now...and H/A it's hard to resist. The only thing is Jussi's fixtures get really tough and I can see myself playing Bego most weeks, but the good thing is Stoke's fixtures improve as they've played a lot of hard matches already.

Which area should I prioritise to change this week?
    Goalkeeper: Long term security
    Midfield: not sure about cazorla
Defence: considering Gibbs but guess I can do without for one more week.
Forwards: considering podolski in place of Torres but patterns suggest Torres is about to come good he is also chelseasvonly optionn ththe centre and is surely guaranteed goals with the creativity behind him.

Fair enough, if there was a deflection (saw it in slo-mo - couldn't find)

Normally - yes, For FPL - no.

"Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

Vorm's touch inside the box or hitting the bar doesn't matter, as long as there was no touch from a Swans player outside the box.

the intended direction was the same but the deflection actually helped the pass otherwise it would have been intercepted easily by Swans def at edge of box. Saying that I don't think that is the reason it's not being given. After the ball hits Vorm and the bar IT IS considered a new phase, I'm not saying I agree with it but that's the way it is. This exact thing happened me a year or 2 ago aswell.

Similar thing happened to Dembele last week, he played a ball to Defoe and a defender tried to intercept but only stopped the ball with one touch, Defoe took it off him ran on and scored . No assist awarded even though the pass reached it's intended destination so looking at it that way it is also possible they are not awarding it due to Williams touch. Either way your shit out of luck, thems the breaks, next week it might go your way.......or not! 🙂

If I went for the 2 cheapo benchable defenders option I could get this frontline:

    Fellaini Cazorla Bale Kagawa Puncheon
    Aguero Fletcher Ba/Berbatov

I like that it's Everton Arsenal Spurs Man Utd // Man City Sunderland Newcastle/Fulham

Pretty decent mix of all the top sides, what do you think?

      Hi martin

That's very similar to what i'm looking at. So I like. Not sure about puncheon though. They have loads of attacking players. Was he or lallana playing deeper and more centrally this week with ramirez playing?

I've got my eye on Bale, Carzola, Barfa, Pienaar, Lallana/Ramirez
      Tevez/Aguero, Berba, Lambert

Only saw this now, sorry mate. I just think Puncheon is a good alternative to Guthrie as he's attacking and is also 4.4...if he continues to start games that is, I don't know much about how Southampton set up, only worry is Puncheon would be rotated where as Guthrie would be more reliable for your bench.

Ramirez could be a great call. and I agree with you on Kags, its far from clear whether he will be as integral to Man Utd's team when Rooney is back.

Looking at Gw6 fixtures and seeing selection headache already.

1: Begovic (H Swa) or Foster (A Avl)
2: Rangel (A Stk) or Demel (A QPR) or Gorkss (H New)
3: Pick three from Hazard (A Ars) , Ben Arfa (A Rdg) , Sterling (A Nor) , Berbatov (H Mci)

    What would be your choices?

Bego, Rangel, BArfa, Sterling, and Berb in starting XI for me now.

That is a bit of a selection headache alright, I'd still say you gotta go with Haz over Sterling, at the end of the day they're both playing away matches and I don't think just because it's Arsenal it should be automatically feared. I would be tempted to play Sterling too though, he could do something there.

@Acqua.. Swansea may be worse at DF as a team compared to West Ham. But Rangel clearly have more potential than Demel. Also, it seems Stoke have attacking problem. They have been short of goal attempts and have scored less than 1 goal per game so far.

If Chico is back in the team on next week as I understand, it will surely be Rangel to start.

I'm going to keep the faith with Danny Graham. Maybe bench him away to Stoke this week, but then have him in the starting lineup for Reading & Wigan at home. After those two games, he's gone for all money, with City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and United in their next 10 games. Might save up some coin in the meantime to switch him to Podolski for QPR, Fulham & Tottenham at home in a stretch of 4 games.

I'm not sure you'll get much out of him. In the games where the swans were doing well he effectively came forward to create gaps for the wingers - good play, but it doesn't aid his fpl score.

He came very close to scoring last night, which may have changed a few people's perceptions of him. Just can't sell him looking at GWs 7&8 on the horizon. Keeping the faith with Cazorla and Bale paid off after a few blanks in the first few GWs and I have the feeling that Graham will do the same.

Well, even if you stick onto him for the next two weeks, the chances of him scoring a hattrick or a brace is very low. There are enough attack minded players around to allow him to score freely! So no to have Graham! Michu might just outscore him! I feel Moore is a better goalscorer!

With penalties in his locker, he's always got a chance to snag one, even when he's out of form. Think I'd rather use my free transfer on Federici > Begovic to be honest.

Have we seen a penalty being taken by any Swan player? I don't think so. Who knows! It might be Michu there too! So not 100% sure on pens! And Lambert being the target man, is a lot worthy!
