The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd downgrade Skrtel to Sagna in a few weeks. I'm just thinking it could be awesome to just have a quality defence like this that you could rotate.

Mate, I've an eye on Johnson right from the start of the season. But Skrtel? Not so much. I have McAuley and I'm thinking McAuley > Sagna when he comes back. Baines and one big hitter is good imo. Just keep rotating with the in-form cheaper defs is better.

It's for Liverpool's run of fixtures coming up (nor STO RDG eve NEW)

I can see a few Clean sheets there, I don't intend on holding him forever, In fact I'll be downgrading to Sagna soon after. Skrtel is .4 cheaper than Johnson.

The only thing is Olsson is only 5m, He's hardly breaking the bank, and you could just have a 3.9 benched defender every game and rotate those 4. Basically I'd play Kompany and Baines every game and rotate Skrtel/Sagna with Olsson...doesn't sound too bad on paper, but ye it's a bit steep for defence!

You'll play 4 or 3 at the back?? I don't need to tell you that as the season moves on, CS are a rarity! And thats whats making me think twice bot this strategy!

Sure, I'm not saying I'll definitely do it, I just think Baines and Kompany will probably be up with the top scoring defenders by the end. Man City are going to eventually keep lots of CS's. Baines is a must have, Kompany will be a great asset eventually. Skrtel is a punt for a few weeks, Olsson is a way into WBA defence which is solid. And downgrade Skrtel to Sagna for a profit in a few weeks time. It would be decent if I could not let it unbalance things in attack.

It's hard to suggest without knowing your team. Based on what I know, I think you have at least 6.0m. If you don't have Everton, I'd try to get Pienaar. Otherwise, I'd consider Nolan or Sterling is worth a punt on Gw 7-8.

    Foster Federici
    Lescott Rangel Demel Gorkss Clyne
    Hazard Kagawa Michu Larsson Noble
    RVP Tevez Ba

0.6 in the bank. So, 0.1 off doing Lescott to Baines. Thinking of downgrading Noble to Sterling and then doing the transfer for a four point hit? Any other ideas/suggestions? Cheers

-8 pts hit is too much imo. You have decent DF for next week, so Cuellar is not urgent.

Improve your chance for points Gibson -> Pienaar with the money in your bank.

No need to take another hit just to get Lambert. He play a team in good form Everton next week.

If Oscar was guaranteed starts I'd get him in right away, he had more shots than any Chelsea player today and Hazard only had 1 shot today. Hazard just works too much for the team to be as potent as he could be I think.

Ye it's a bit of a mess, they must be getting in each others way. Its no surprise their defenders are getting goals, that's the only way to penetrate these parked bus defences. If you look at Cole's goal he sort of sneaks into the box with the Stoke defenders caught unawares. But otherwise their style can lead to endless passing in circles and it's probably easier for teams like Stoke and Qpr to sit back and soak it all up.

It was sickening, 93rd minute...to hold on that long and concede was gutting. I could hardly believe it really. Especially as we've been waiting for a win for so long now. Still positives are we're still unbeaten and should beat Wigan next weekend. I'm considering captaining Fletcher for it, although I bet his luck will run out just when I do!

I would watch the games tomorrow and assess what is best. Lescott seems the obvious one but Citys fixtures are actually better than Spurs/Chelsea I think in the short term, but then Lescott is a rotation risk so basically a liability at his price. I don't think you should drop Cole mainly because his price could rise and it'd be a bad idea to sell him at this moment.

Hazard if you're brave enough. I was possibly able to avoid Hazard (c) easier due to being utterly disappointed with it the previous week. I learnt my lesson that Chelsea just don't score goals for fun at the moment, unless it's Oscar or a Hazard penalty dive.

Oscar will be the guy to get if he nails down a spot. Anyway, I doubt you could possibly be doing as bad as me so far. At least I do have my captain to come...*sigh*

Getting the right picks in FPL is getting Much harder. Take Midfield for example, Few years back you would have just Picked Lamps, Gerrard, Ronaldo and Fabregas. Now it all rotating BS and there are no stand out star Midfielders of the same Ilk as the former in their prime else they have been xferd.

Can't believe how Fellaini is appearing in every single team here now. He's a good shout obviously, but to appear in every team? nah he's not must have I don't think.

I'm looking for a new mid to replace Dembele this week but considering I have Baines I think i'll avoid Fellaini and go for Sterling instead which frees up cash for elsewhere.

I'd count a bad match as not having any impact on a game and generally playing poorly, but he did fine against QPR last week and on another day would have returned more points. Tis the luck element of fpl. Against Stoke he was rubbish.

I think I'm going to use my WC to choose a somewhat alternative team. But it's still such a gamble with only 5 weeks of information.

It'll be a difficult call for Moyes, and I'll think he will bring Fellaini back into midfield.

But even if Fellaini carried on up top, I'd still take Pienaar over him (I have neither). Pienaar deserved an assist yesterday and is likely to do well in all games whereas Fellaini does well when he can out-muscle opponents - that's not going to last all season.

Super annoying, basically the way the rules works is that it makes the crossbar out to be like an attacking team player (who scores no points for anyone, ever) and as such the moment Mirallas hit the bar the assist shifted from Pienaar to the errrr....the bar. Wonderful FPL logic, grrrrr.

Because he doesn't hit the headlines like Berbatov does.

It's not about performance, its about headlines, and Duff just does it slow and steady.

I'm tell you know, if a 6m rated midfield only got a goal/assist every other GW - he'd be one of the top-scorers and no-one would have him because he never gets double figures.

He's always been a class player but in recent years he was more about working for the team. I just think with Dempsey gone he'll be expected to step up more like he used to in his Blackburn and Chelsea days. I like him he's very direct but the only thing that would make me hesitate is the fact that he's prone to picking up niggles and injuries in the last few years.

So sub him out when he's injured 🙂

Honestly, if I wasn't looking at other things in my team I'd seriously consider Duff. For every reason you mentioned he's a class player, a differential and most importantly a points scorer in FPL.

So bring him in, you don't have to have the sheep team with an inconsistent Pienaar/Fellaini/Michu in it.

Perhaps, but I don't get the whole 'double/triple is too much theory'

Last season could you have enough Swansea cover? Newcastle?

Finding that mid table team that outperforms and loading up on 3 of their players is the way to find value in your team.

Yes, you could have a bad week, but that only matters in head to head not over the course of the season.

I generally tend to steer clear of tripling up... unless it's really obvious. I don't think Fulham are such a team though.

It's fine to make hay while the sun shines like with United 3 seasons ago for instance. But sometimes it can bite you if the team's form nosedives like what happened with Chelsea two seasons ago and then it leaves you with far too much to change.

On your hit, who you going to play Jaasi vs QPR or Begovic vs. Swansea? If Begovic, and you think he's likely to score 4 more than Jaasi - then the hit is ok.

Otherwise I'd just do Petric -> Lambert.
