Moneyball – Jason Puncheon

A successful 2011/12 promotion campaign saw Southampton rack up the goals as Nigel Adkinsโ€™ side finished second in the npower Championship. Having found the net 85 times last term, the Saints immediately placed Fantasy managers on alert and on the lookout for new blood for their squads. The most obvious and popular pick was Rickie Lambert who notched 25 goals in the Championship, while Adam Lallana and new arrivals Jay Rodriguez and later Gaston Ramirez have also been touted as potential Fantasy options. Even Morgan Schneiderlin – who had just two goals in almost 150 appearances coming into the season – has received some attention after his goal against Man United in Gameweek three.

Ever since I started asking whether a Bale to Cazorla switch was worth a 4pt hit, I've noticed an increasing support for the Spaniard ahead of this weekend. I've no illusions that I have played any part in this mini-bandwagon but does this not give me a more conclusive answer to the question

"Should I take a hit to take out Bale for Cazorla?"?

If you have time, do you think Baines is a better captaincy choice than Pienaar?

Don't take a hit to get rid of Bale, no. Do it after next week for free.

Yeah, I'd rather captain Baines than Pienaar.

I agree with this. Possibly no Valencia, and definitely no Vidic means United will be more vulnerable. I wouldn't be surprised if Bale scored well, even if I think United will win...

I think we're getting close to the situation where the best teams will not be worth anything close to £100m. For example, look at this team:

    Jassk - Begovic
    Baines - Gibbs - Demel - Clyne - Gorkss
    HBA - Fellaini - Cazorla - Pienaar - Puncheon
    Berb - Fletcher - Ba

    Total: £93m

I'm suggesting doing this, but it would be a competitive team IMO.
    Thoughts?

Word. And you could sell Ba for Lambert and get Sterling for Puncheon (If you don't want to double up on Southampton) and suddenly you're even cheaper. The defense is brutally bad though. Southampton/Reading/West Ham ain't Swansea. I doubt they'll get 10 clean sheets between them this season...

        -8.
I need to ditch Jarvis before he plummets in value and I'm left holding him so resigned to losing -4 there. I was going to ditch Tevez but it seems stupid to keep an injured striker and ditch a fit one. So I may ditch both.

Hi Scroob - somehow the players coming in here don't seem quite exciting enough to warrant an 8 pt hit. I know each is a good player but if there was a, say, Suarez or Podolski in there (in other words a captaincy option and a long-term option to play against anyone) - I'd be more tempted.

I think Pienaar/Fellaini/HBA are all in the same group of players and there is not a lot to call between any of them.

That said, fixtures for Everton look very good while those for Newcastle just good. Personally, I would look for someone else to take out for Fellaini as the three mid-price midfielders are the pick of the bunch.

So glad I'm proving myself right by thinking Hazard will not be a regular source of points this season. He was a very hit and miss player in Ligue 1 and he will likely be the same here. First 3 GWs for him were certainly a one off. Expect another 2 pointer tomorrow Hazard owners ๐Ÿ™‚

they did enjoy his first 2 GW's points though.

I would have to if I had him!

Don't get me wrong, I fully expect him to have more 10+ point weeks but, at the same time, expect 2s and 3s a lot more often.

Am in the same boat speccy - looking at Tevez to Podolski and benching Berba for a few weeks.

If not I can only afford 7.7m striker = Lambert / Fletcher / Defoe and I'm not keen on Defoe away at ManU.....don't like the other 2 either.....despite their points recently

Aye plus the comments below is making me want to hang on to Berba. I think I am happier dicthing Tevez who may / may not start for Podolski who has a great run after Chelsea.

In addition, Jelly should be a good shout, so go for it....maybe wait until later tonight in case any more info comes to light?

I`m not convinced Berbs will miss the Southampton game

"“Unfortunately Dimitar is injured now and can’t play on Saturday so that is the disappointing thing,” Jol told the gathered media. “He will be out for the next two weeks.

“In his session he was looking good, as usual, and then his final shot he felt something and he had to go in and stop training. It appears he had – not a tear – but a sort of problem with his hip and upper thigh so we couldn’t take the risk to involve him against City."

He says could not take the risk to involve him v City, I think his two weeks is a dutch way of saying he `ll be back for Southampton. Something has been lost in "translation"

Now all we need is for Alan Pardew, with the new found sense of authority his 8 year contract has brought, to bench Ba.
