Moneyball – Jason Puncheon

A successful 2011/12 promotion campaign saw Southampton rack up the goals as Nigel Adkins’ side finished second in the npower Championship. Having found the net 85 times last term, the Saints immediately placed Fantasy managers on alert and on the lookout for new blood for their squads. The most obvious and popular pick was Rickie Lambert who notched 25 goals in the Championship, while Adam Lallana and new arrivals Jay Rodriguez and later Gaston Ramirez have also been touted as potential Fantasy options. Even Morgan Schneiderlin – who had just two goals in almost 150 appearances coming into the season – has received some attention after his goal against Man United in Gameweek three.

I am wondering if Tevez will start. I don´t think so. 120 min on tuesday and Aguero rested. And then again champions league next week. I am afraid he will get 10 minutes in the end and get one point. On the other hand he could score then too.... Gaaaaah. I don´t know either. I have him on the bench right now, but I am not sure I will keep him there. Feels strange to have only RvP on top (I have berba injured)

I think I will take my chances with Tevez after all, and start him. But I do it reluctantly 🙂 I start Sterling too, but bench Kacaniklic...

Berbatov injury sucks! And for two games it is not worth transfering him out I think. I just have to hang on to him...

So Berba out for 2 weeks, looks like that's me playing 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 for the next 2 weeks then.

I trust am I still ok to draft Jelly in?

Should be. The chatter is that all other striking options are banged up in some way and Jelly scored a goal in training. Make of that what you will.

For Gorkss to keep a clean sheet the odds are 5/2.
For Kacaniklic to score the odds are 5.

So logically it would be the smartest to play Gorkss before Kacaniklic? Or does Kacaliknic better assistpotential overwheigh? Even with Berbatov injured?

This would mean I would play 5 defenders this week. Crazy?

Shouldn't you be happy that others have shipped them out? If he does well, then you gain from it, which would punish those who got rid. But really, hoping he punishes people seems to be taking things a bit too personally.

I wouldn't go with Mannone on a WC as he's close to being replaced and they play Chelsea. Ramirez is a gamble, but could pay off. I don't know that I would take Michu at this point, but it could be smart still with the easy home fixtures coming. Fix your keeper situation and I think you're ok.

I don’t know if anyone still cares, but there have been a lot of comments complaining about how the FA appears to have re-tried Terry for an offence for which the criminal courts found him innocent. Just a few points of clarification about this (some of these observations have already been made by me or others, but I just thought I’d pull them all together):

    1. Terry was found “not guilty”; this does not mean he was found “innocent”, only that the prosecution could not prove the elements of a particular offence beyond a reasonable doubt (a very demanding standard, and much higher than the standard for civil cases, which is “on the balance of probabilities”).

    2. The media help confuse things by reporting the FA charge using identical language to that used for the criminal charge. They earlier reported that the criminal courts found Terry not guilty of “racially abusing” Anton Ferdinand, and now they say the FA has found him “guilty” of “racially abusing” Anton Ferdinand. In both cases “racially abusing” is simply a false description of the offence, and using the word “guilty” about the FA finding is calculated to mislead. The main point is that the two offences are very different.

    3. The criminal charge was a “racially aggravated” public order offence. To prove racial aggravation the prosecution needed to show that Terry (a) “demonstrate[d] hostility towards the victim based on the victim's membership (or presumed membership) of a racial group” or (b) that “the offence [was] motivated (wholly or partly) by hostility towards members of a racial group based on their membership of that group.” When Terry was found not guilty it was because the prosecution could not prove the racial hostility motive.

    4. The FA charge was “using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards” Ferdinand in violation of FA rule E3(1), with the “aggravating factor,” under E3(2) of “including a reference to any one or more of a person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, faith, gender, sexual orientation or disability”. So the key point is that with the FA charge, there is no need to prove any motive of racial hostility. All that was necessary was to show that there were abusive or insulting words and that they included reference to race/colour. In the criminal trial everyone agree that this happened, and the debate was about whether it involved racial hostility. This was not a factor for the FA charge.

    5. As far as burden of proof, this charge was not even decided in a civil court but by an FA Independent Regulatory Commission. The presumed standard would be balance of probabilities, but in truth no conclusion they arrived at could be successfully challenged in court unless it was perverse or without any evidentiary basis.

    6. I promise to stop talking about this now--the Tevez worries had me on the verge of WC and now Berb has pushed me over it, so time to go tinker. 😉

Actually, he is "presumed" innocent. That is a long way from being "proved" innocent. He might or might not be/have been innocent, I don't have a strong view. What I am trying to make clear is that the criminal verdict does not mean, nor did it claim to mean, that he had been proved innocent. He was presumed innocent as all accuse poeple are, and when he was not proved guilty, he remained "presumed", but not proved, innocent.

        Not quite.

There's a presumption of innocence (i.e. the burden of proof is on the prosecution, not the defence) but failing to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt isn't the same as proving innocence.

It's a subtle distinction but very important.

The other key concept which nobody is paying attention to is that a criminal case is under English Law, whereas an FA hearing us under FA Rules - not the same thing at all; different process, different criteria for 'guilt', different burden of proof, disrepute elements in FA rules which are not in law etc etc etc.

It's mostly because there are lots of exciting strikers around and people see it as an excuse to go and get one. It's human nature really. But I agree, definitely wouldn't sell him myself, esp. not for a hit.

Despite the price rises (got him in at 6.9) should I be looking to ship Berbs until his back?

I am guessing we will see a price drop or two since his next game likely won't be until Oct 20th after the international break.

Christ Berbatov injury has stuffed up my plans and this gameweek I am having to dig deep into the deadwood in my team. I need to play two of these guys, which pair?

      Noble (qpr)
      Clyne (eve)
      Demel (qpr)
      Maloney (sun)

        Clyne + Noble for me.
But I haven't seen Maloney play at all this year so don't have an opinion on him.

Clyne vs. Baines is going to be a really good up and down battle. Clye could easily get in behind a few times and Everton aren't water tight. So I'm playing him.

And then I've gone Noble just cos it's a derby and scoring in a derby is the type of thing Noble might do! Not the greatest logic but there it is...

I have a similar looking choice out of Hangeland, Demel, Maloney and Clyne (Berba on the bench).

I am currently going for Demel and Maloney, with Clyne and Hangeland on the bench in that order.

No way should you play Clyne away to a freescoring Everton not to mention Soton concede lots of goals every game. Noble Maloney if i were you, most likely they are the ones going to get anything, if any, out of that lot.
