Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jobi McAnuff

In the search for attacking points at a bargain basement price, savvy Fantasy managers need to look for the unlikeliest of players in the most improbable of places. At first glance, perhaps, Reading’s Jobi McAnuff, the 31-year journeyman midfielder with just one international cap to his name for Jamaica, represents a ludicrous route to Fantasy football glory.

Dig deeper, however, and he emerges as not only a solid Fantasy prospect but a possible contender for bargain of the season. Those eagle-eyed Fantasy managers who have already taken a close look at the assists table will have seen that McAnuff nestles in joint third place with Juan Mata on five, just behind Eden Hazard and Carlos Tevez – despite playing for one of the Premier League’s least attacking sides.

This ability to lay on chances for others has been a hallmark of his career, spent largely in the second tier of English football. In Reading’s successful promotion season of 2011/12 he registered 12 assists as well as five goals and, over the previous six seasons, where he also played for Championship stalwarts Watford and Crystal Palace, McAnuff amassed a total of 48 assists.

Aside from his clear attacking potential, a favourable run of fixtures over the next five Gameweeks (qpr, NOR, EVE, wig, avl) have propelled the Royals winger onto our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. Price is another factor. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McAnuff started at 5.5 but is now available at just 5.1, with an ownership of 1% making him a standout selection among the game’s differentials. In the Sky Sports game he is priced similarly (5.0) but only 0.3% of managers have noticed that he has now amassed 38 points, four more than Steven Pienaar and five more than Hatem Ben Arfa, who is owned by a quarter of Sky players.

With 31 points in the FPL game he is Reading’s most impressive Fantasy performer so far and has accrued the same number of points as the similarly priced Raheem Sterling, for example, though investing in McAnuff comes with a slight health warning. As shown by Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Arsenal, clean sheet points are certainly unlikely for McAnuff, as Reading have conceded in every game so far this campaign. In addition, McDermott’s men have only mustered 11 goals so far, notching four on the road, meaning McAnuff’s team mates will need to step up their game if the wide man’s creative endeavours are to be further realised.

While the 7-5 home cup defeat by Arsenal last Tuesday may have felt like “a funeral” according to the Reading manager, the signs are positive that the team will improve and gather more attacking returns over their forthcoming kind run of fixtures, though. McDermott has moved away from a more cautious 4-4-1-1 in recent games, with a shift in formation to 4-4-2 in three of the last four Gameweeks producing seven goals. If Reading can pick their chins off the floor after the midweek Madejski defeat, the short-term at least looks potentially prosperous for McAnuff’s possible suitors.

    Kac, kac, kac.

The light bulb came on earlier and removed Kac and Lambchop for Sterlo and Di Santos (or whoever it is). 1 goal in every 3 is acceptable for 4.7er.

    Thoughts?

OOP and on pens. Plus WIG are a better team than RDG.

Also I now have Di Santo so we can share our successes together.

I've got Baines, Rafael, Hughes, Demel, and Barnett.

With Demel out injured and Barnett not playing, I don't have much of a choice with defenders. Guess I should be thankful Baines and Rafael has been picking up points for me though.

Certainly maverick, if a little crazy......no need to transfer out Bale, Berba no problems....reckon they're about the same in & out so overall -4 for a hit (or losing a free transfer)

Forgot to mention my reasons and caveats...

        1) Bale has mcy and ars in GW11/12 and I fancy MCY and Sagna to keep him quiet)
        2) I will get Bale back in GW13
        3) Pienaar has SUN, rea, NOR from GW11-13 and I'd kinda like some EVE attacking coverage for those games.
        4) Berba's next 4 are (ars, SUN, sto, che)
        5) Tevez provides MCY attacking coverage and they have 2 tasty home games.

    Here's a thought.

    Mata + Hazard.

They've both scored really well over the last few weeks and everybody's complaining about which one to get. Why not get both?

It worked two seasons ago with Bale and VdV.

    A midfield of:

    Mata, Hazard, Bale, Michu, Sterling

Would surely score huge points over the season - heck, those first 4 will probably be the top scoring midfielders this season. If you can get RVP and Ba in up top, and Baines in defense, you'd be looking at a really good side.

True but a bad Chelsea run looks unlikely considering their form, and if they do, it's easy to just drop one. The high price of the mid means you should have the pick of the bunch.

I know I'd want at least one Chelsea mid for the rest of the season, regardless of bad runs.

    Morning gents,

Hope all are well... How am I set for this weekend? No FT Did Guthrie to McAnuff yesterday and article suggests it wasn't a bad move. Looking at playing him ahead of Sterling, however he will most probably come on for Ba anyhow

    Begovic
    Cuellar Ivanovic Baines
    McAnuff Hazard Michu Santi
    RVP(C) Ba Lambert

    Vorm Sterling Hangeland Clyne

would you have it any different?

Future moves include Vorm to Ruddy (only plays when Bego has a tough fixture few and far between)
    Ivanovic to Santon
Upgrade Lambert to Jelly unless he starts performing

I had seen the number of assists and had looked at him at the beginning of the year but foolishly went Guthrie instead.

I wasn't really looking at Maloney. I was between Gera and McA. If I knew Gera would continue in the hole and would definitely play then I would have had a harder decision

If I cannot field eleven players then i would always take a hit to correct my team. As normally the worst result is 2 points dropped per hit but you have corrected your problem and have an opportunity to score more

Not sure that you could classify Mata as a 'kneejerk'. I brought him in early this week because I was concious of the price rises. I'd have preferred if he hadn't played 120 mins (obviously) - but even if I'd known that that was going to happen I still would have made the same transfer.

Im on a different site from the traditional fantasy EPL one, one based in NZ and AUS called sportal. The pricing works differently and you can make a profit off on form players if you sell.. bit different but good fun a bit better and harder than the traditional one.

It allows for 2-5-3 formation, which is great if i dont say so my self.

Dont know how to link it... sorry new to this site.

The stats are all in favor of a ManUtd goal fest, especially since RVP was rested midweek.

I can't see Bale scoring 3 games in a row especially after 90 midweek.
