Captains

The Captain Poll – Gameweek 10

Maybe it’s written in the stars, or all over Arsene Wenger’s worry lines, but the fact is that the majority of us are backing Robin Van Persie to put his former club to the sword on Saturday. Having notched his third double figure return in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Van Persie has goals and confidence flowing through him and will come up against an Arsenal side struggling to come to terms with life without their talisman.

Robin Van Persie looks set to top our Captain poll (see homepage middle column) for the fourth time this season, with a healthy margin separating him from Tottenham’s Gareth Bale – his nearest rival so far. The Dutchman’s performances on winning our poll have been mixed to this point. While he fetched a goal and an assist to reward the faith in Gameweek 8, previously against Wigan in Gameweek 4 and Spurs in Gameweek 6, he mustered just a single assist.

Arsenal have conceded in their last three away trips, while United’s goal power looks to be bristling with Wayne Rooney operating off Van Persie, and Antonio Valenicia installed on the right to bring his reliable supply of crosses that have seen him fetch four assists in consecutive league starts. The odds looked piled against the Gunners, with Van Persie likely to be first in line to dish out the punishment.

Ironically, Van Persie will come up against last week’s poll winner – Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard returned just three points to reward a show of faith which saw 21% of our voters backing him for returns in the home clash with QPR. Cazorla’s humble tally lowered the average for the poll winner to 6.8 for the season and meant that we’ve seen just one double figure return since Gameweek 3 from the leading candidate.

Perhaps that will give some comfort to those who will go into the weekend without Van Persie, who perhaps are looking to back Gareth Bale, Juan Mata or Carlos Tevez. Those three are the main chasing pack right now but are trailing by some distance as the Dutchman dominates.

Bale continued his run of form with a opening goal in last night’s Capital One Cup defeat at Norwich, while Mata was forced to endure a full 120 minutes of action as Chelsea finally disposed of United in their ding-dong tie. Roberto Di Matteo has stressed that he will monitor his squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Swansea, although given his run of form, it’s pretty imaginable that Chelsea will start without him at the Liberty. Mata could, however, be handed limited pitch time, depending on how the match develops for Di Matteo’s side.

Carlos Tevez is perhaps the most intriguing alternative of our three in the chasing pack – his winning goal against Swansea was his first in six league matches but consistent assists and FPL bonus have kept him bubbling. The scene is set for Tevez to step into a cauldron at his former club West Ham this weekend, although with a critical Champions League tie with Ajax beckoning, we are, as always, left to second guess Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet intentions with his striking quartet all vying for starts.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

kind of, I like to have at least 2 players from decent teams, you only have 1 so will be relying on picking 2 clean sheet chances from 4, not bad odd, but when 2 of them are QPR and reading you're actually down to 2 from 2

    RVP captain could be worst

    - Play againts former club
    - Play under a lot of pressure, booed by Arsenal fans
    - Always get coverage by Arsenal players. Fergie should predict that and tell RVP to play wide in this game, create the chance for Rooney, Welbeck...get in the position. This week could be good for Rooney
    - Some bad tackle is coming, injury is hanging
    - Early Kick -off
    - Of he cannt play well vs old club, Fergie could sub him early to rest for Champions League game.

I don't see the 'I CAN'T PLAY AGAINST MY FORMER TEAM' thing coming into play...he's a ruthless mercenary and if he was to show weakness the Arsenal fans would pounce on it and mock him...but if he scores against them he has the upper hand and it will look like he made the right decision. His pride is at stake here!

      - Surely a good thing.
      - Will want to score to shut them up
      - This is true but assist points are still points, and I think he'll be on pens too for when Valencia/Wellbeck/Young goes down
      - Possible
      - So?
      - Not really an important CL game and Fergie will want to give his other strikers game time there. Can't see him coming off early unless he's on a yellow and looking agitated or injured or winning by 3 goals

Current team's in a bit of a state.

    GK - Foster, Cerny
DF - Jenkinson, Clichy, Williams, Barnett, Demel
MF - Ben Arfa, Michu, Yaya Toure, Puncheon, Noble
FW - Suarez, Van Persie, Torres

Thinking of taking a 4 point hit and doing:
    Jenkinson > Cameron
    Ben Arfa > Mata
    Noble > Sterling

    Worth it?

    Begovic
    Baines, Sagna, Clyne
    Bale, Mata, Sterling, Cazorla
    RvP, Tevez, Fletcher

With a planned Fletcher > Ba next week, where should I be looking to go after that? Subs are Guzan, Gorkss, McCartney and Kacaniklic. I plan on freeing some money from Guzan to upgrade one of the cheap defenders to a solid 4.5 like Cuellar. But I'm also keen on switching Cazorla to Silva... or Walcott, depending on what his situation looks like in a few weeks.

    Any input?

Who has the best chance of getting a clean sheet this week? Got S taylor, demel and Gibbs all who wont play, should i take a 4pt hit to get rid of taylor?

No!. Get rid of the ones that are actually injured. Demel > Nelsen/Gorkks could be the way to go.

I'd take the hit to ditch Gibbs I think, based on the fact S Taylor could play, then has 2 nice home fixtures to come. If he doesn't, can always offload to Shawcross.

Considering a 4pt hit for Wilson - Wilkinson, necessary?

    Current team:

    Ruddy (Jaask)

    Clyne, Vertonghen Baines (McCartney, Wilson)

    Michu, Mata, Morrison, Bale (Kaca)

    Ba, Giroud, RVP

Yeah I do agree, but your GW won't be based around how Giroud, Clyne and McCartney perform, it'll be based around how RVP, Bale, Mata, Morrison & Baines perform I think.

    Hi Guys

My midfield is currently Cazorla, Ben Arfa, Michu, Piennar and Puncheon.

Am thinking Puncheon to Hoilett this week. I dont have any Chelsea or Bale coverage is that a risk?

I am thinking to bring Bale or Mata in now would be chasing points but is one of them essential?

I like the idea of having Bale 'coverage' 😆

Why do you need to switch Puncheon? You'll rarely play your 5th midfielder, so there's no point spending more than 5m or a precious, precious transfer on them. Try switching Ben Arfa to Mata/Bale if you can.

The rest of the team is:

Begovic (Jussi) - Demel, McAuley, Evans, Cuellar - Cazorla, Pienaar, Michu, Ben Arfa, Puncheon - RVP, Aguero, Fletcher.

I am thinking Ben Arfa/ Michu to Hoilett and Fletcher to Ba next week.

Good call or should I do Ben Arfa to Mata?

Does anyone else actually fancy Cazorla to do well this weekend? Utd haven't looked great at the back, don't have a proper defensive midfielder and Santi has good away stats. I probably don't have the balls to captain him, but I certainly wouldn't be benching him, which I've seen suggested several times on here today.
