From The Physio

From the Physio – Gameweek 10

This week’s update, sees Dimitar Berbatov fall languidly, once again, firmly on the Scout’s physio plinth, landing a further body-blow to Fantasy Managers, this time squarely in the ribs.

Commenting after the Reading match Martin Jol confessed that Dimitar Berbatov received a pain-killing injection at half-time to facilitate his second half appearance:

“He needed an injection to play in the second half, and showed a lot of character. We need to have a look at it because maybe it’s broken, but it was very painful”

Fuelled with adrenaline from an enthralling encounter and with the character of his team in mind, this is perhaps a slight over-reaction from Jol, as it would be very unlikely, even reckless, for a medic to allow a player to carry on with a suspected, even moderately, fractured rib. To do so, risks further complications, indeed, a punctured lung form an awkward fall or a mis-placed elbow or knee would not be unusual during a football match of the intensity of the Premier League. Of course some football clubs are more ruthless than others, but, even so, a fractured rib would usually exhibit pain and swelling to such an extent that would render them unable to continue regardless of any interventions.

Additionally, it must also be noted that segments of the Thoracic Spine and the surrounding nerve and soft-tissue can often refer pain to present classic symptoms of a cracked rib, so too can a pneumothorax or respiratory muscle damage. These points cast further doubt on such a swift diagnosis before an x-ray could be administered.

On a final note, reports today suggest that Berbatov has the desire and appetite to continue playing until he is 40. The timing of this statement is interesting. Berbatov comes across as an introverted, sensitive soul and such sunny optimism is not usually the mind-set of a player in the middle of an injury. Anyway, if it were fractured and treated Berbatov would be sporting a fetching, compressive corset type garment to facilitate healing and, on recent form, surely this photograph would have found its way onto his Facebook page by now.

Personally, I feel Berbatov suffered a minor soft-tissue injury, which, in all likelihood, will be resolved by the weekend, which should see him grace the pitch at Craven Cottage, as Everton roll up, with the insouciant grace and style to which we have become accustomed.

It's mostly down to the fact that Fulham have so many attacking options ahead of him in the pecking order... and let's not forget he's still fairly young...

LM is the role which Kieran Richardson seems to have right now...

I am looking into the future - 40 points ahead in my main league and not bothered too much about a hit or two.

RVP Sterling Gorkss in for Ba Caz Boyce - 8 pt hit

Suarez & Pienaar in for Berb & Caz - 4 pt hit

Gerrard for Caz - 0 hit

Have him already, but just wondering if this is because you fancy Sunderland cs chances more away? I'm leaning towards begovic (nor) this week because I reckon the stoke defence might hold up.

Ah that, yes, possible 6 point boost could swing it. Was considering adding a stoke defender to my stoke keeper, the charms of the DGW make me inclined towards bardsley but that would mean doubling up on sun defenders which is borderline for me.

Why would you pay an extra 0.3m for Bardsley instead of Cuellar? Is it for the attacking threat? If I recall correctly all other more forward players in Sunderland have not managed that much attacking points so far.

Yep. Gets forward, crosses, but above all has a thunderous and accurate shot. Hoping there's some Fletcher feeding off his delivery too.

Also, er, this would be in addition to cuellar. I think doubling is okay for now given fixtures and DGW, etc. Can always fix in WC worst case.

He could have a cracked rib
I had two when victim of a hit and run , they not dangerous but they are painful for a few weeks ,Would be rstrictive i think if playing football

This is what wiki say about cracked rib
A cracked rib is only partially broken; the rib is still mostly intact and able to do its job, and doesn't need (or have) any special treatment except not doing what cracked it in the first place.

That smug feeling when you have Sterling on the benched primed and ready to come on when needed 🙂

It's an even better feeling when he scores and you have him in your starting XI instead of looking stupid on bench.

Even if he lucky enough to score, it doesn't help me any, since I have decided to stick with Foster in goal...

Lose, Lose... the only situation where I will benefit, is if Lambert scores 2 and misses a penalty (which is saved by Foster), but that is a tall order with only 15 minutes playing time...

Should i take out Ivanovic/Cameron/Gorkks for Cuellar? (not this week)

I do have both but I just have a feeling about the racist. He seems primed for big stuff and I want to keep the faith for a wee while. Once City are out of the CL, I want Aguero.

I suppose if you already have the racist its fair enough. I reckon Sterling is enough coverage though but then again Silva may be enough Citeh cover when he returns.

I really want Tevez but it would be a real mission to get him in. A Cazorla > Silva trade would be much easier but then I wouldn't have Arsenal cover for their good run. Its not easy trying to have everybody

Out of interest, if your main H2H rival had taken a points hit this week, would you be more inclined to:

    a) not take any hits and go into the week with a 4 point advantage
    b) see this as a 'free' opportunity to take a hit and improve your team for the rest of the season
