Spot the Differential

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 10

In a frantic Friday packed full of articles, we finally see out the day with our pre-weekend regular. As always, we roll out three overlooked alternatives ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline for your perusal…

Antonio Valencia

Having racked up four goals and 14 assists over 2,124 minutes in the previous campaign, the United winger had proven to be a constant source of Fantasy points for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The Red Devils’ summer acquisition of Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie from Arsenal shifted the spotlight away from the former Wigan man, though, and with Wayne Rooney also in the mix, Valencia has been shifted to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking.

To an extent, it’s understandable. While the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla dominate the heavyweight attention with eye-catching displays aplenty, Valencia’s highest haul has been just five points. In a campaign already hampered by ankle and foot injuries, the winger has returned to form and fitness and is again hinting at the consistency which served his Fantasy owners so well last time round – Valencia has now provided an assist in each of his last four starts and could well be set to torment Arsenal’s stand-in left-back Andre Santos in tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off.

Priced at 8.6 in FPL and 7.9 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia has an ownership of just 2.7% in the former game and with a strong run of fixtures to follow, looks an enticing differential route into a United side that have already racked up 24 goals, more than any side so far.

Theo Walcott

A hat-trick and a trio of assists in Arsenal’s extraordinary midweek Capital One Cup comeback win at Reading highlighted Walcott’s current form. Having failed to start a single league match since Gameweek 1, he’s been something of an outcast this term but with Gervinho sidelined due to an ankle injury, tomorrow’s encounter at Old Trafford looks likely to hand him a chance to return to the Gunners first XI.

Much has been made over his desire to nail down a central role but Walcott may have to settle for a berth on the right flank, with Aaron Ramsey the man likely to make way now that Jack Wilshere is back to partner Mikel Arteta in the centre. Given the comparative form of Olivier Giroud, though, Wenger may well be tempted to shift Walcott centrally if things aren’t going his side’s way tomorrow and with a home clash against Fulham to follow, he also offers the potential for points next week, too. Priced at 8.7 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, and with an ownership of just 1.2% in FPL, many will be hoping Walcott can return to the form that harvested 169 FPL points in the season gone by.

Wes Hoolahan

There’s no question the season started poorly for the Republic of Ireland international. Paul Lambert’s departure to Villa afforded Chris Hughton the chance to take the Carrow Road reins and with the new boss undecided over his best starting XI, Hoolahan cut a peripheral figure, with a mere 14 minutes game time over Norwich’s first four league fixtures.

Since Gameweek 5, though, the playmaker has started four of the last five and has played every minute from Gameweek 7 onwards. As confidence begins to grow, a 1-0 home win over Arsenal was followed by a draw at Lambert’s new club Villa, with Hoolahan a key figure in last weekend’s match –he provided the assist for Michael Turner’s equaliser and resultantly picking up two bonus points.

Tucked in behind Grant Holt in Hughton’s now-default 4-4-1-1, his creativity is clearly crucial to the Canaries chances as Hughton looks to build on the back of the midweek Capital One Cup win over Spurs. Up against a Stoke side that have managed a single clean sheet in their five away games, and with a trip to Reading to follow next weekend, Hoolahan – coming in at 5.5 in FPL and 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 0.3% in both games, offers a real mid-price midfield punt ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    A few queries!

Already made my trade, did Santi -> Mata

quite angry but at the same time I made some cash on Mata and Santi is probably only going to get 2 points anyway.

So should I start Mata and hope he plays anyway or start Lambert against WBA?! Also, I have Cuellar/Demel/Wilson injured! Shall I take a hit to bring Nelson for Demel (was going to do this trade as my 5th cheap defender but was planning on doing it later).

Hi guys, please rate my wildcard team for this week. Any constructive criticism is welcome.

    Begovic (McCarthy)

Baines J.Evans Nelsen (Cuellar & Clyne)

    Mata Bale Fellaini Sterling (Lallana)

    RVP Tevez Berbatov

I 'could' put in oscar for fellaini and downgrade Evans to Baird for this week? Only other way to create value is downgrading Baines and sticking Suarez up top for Berba? Any help appreciated.

Would rather have Gorkss than Clyne. 0.1 cheaper, and DGW on the horizon. And much rather Sagna than Evans.

Hmm, I am a fan of the holy trinity in the middle with Mata/Haz + Caz + Bale, supplied with RVP up top. But hey, that's only my thoughts.

Reckon the Baird boat has sailed. Fulham's fixtures are not too great, really. Berbatov might come good, though.

      Good luck.

Hey Zep...In my opinion...I've seen worse moves...it's a tactical one and personally I'm considering getting Nelsen in too for their fixtures. I'm starting to regret not doing Caz > Bale...I could still do it if I did: Demel > Nelsen Caz > Bale (-4 hit)

Seems ridiculous but is it really? 😯

No rush actually because I don't lose anything on Caz's fall and Bale won't rise tonight. Fair play for doing it...there's nothing worse than hanging onto players that hinder future opportunities. And if Nelsen doesn't pay off the 4 point hit...well let's just hope someone else does with a huge score!

I don't really know if I believe Bale will score...it's more out of fear he will...and how pricey he is getting! With all these injuries I'm thinking maybe having 2FT next week might be a blessing?

          Thoughts?

If your THAT convinced about Sagna then I suppose its a good idea. Perhaps its in situations such as this that we ignore the golden rule about never taking a hit for a defender.

I guess I missed the Scout tweet on Ciaran Clark. Now that he's back in contention for the Sunderland's game, it eases things a bit better. Well, having a 2-pointer player is better than nothing or rather playing a 10-men lineup.

Same question for me. Suarez seems right.
Last week it was Cazorla versus Tevez and I stayed with the poll when Tevez seemed right.

Thoughts on my wildcard team? I know it won't be to everyone's taste but I really like it.

    Begovic
    Rafael, Cuellar, Cameron
    Bale, Hazard, Michu, Sterling
    RVP, Tevez, Defoe

    Subs: Tremmel, McAnuff, Evans, Gorkks

With plans to do Defoe to Ba next week and also to get rid of one of Evans or Rafael at some point to Sagna.

So got Mata and Ba in doubt for tomorrow and Sterling on the bench right now.. would you bench any of the first 2 for Sterling or take the risk and if any of the 2 doesn't play wait for the auto-sub to take place?

I'm in the same position as you (only Mata). I'm starting Mata first and have Clark who seems to be in contention (as the rest of my bench are injured) left on the bench. Mata may come in and make a difference than a certain recently-returned Clark. This way, I have two chances but priority is on Mata.

Start Ba for sure. In his case, he will start if fit. If not fit, he will not make the bench.(auto sub will take care of it)
As for Mata, I think a 20 min cameo is possible.

sure thing about Ba my worry is definately Mata keeping some possible points from Sterling in the bench for a 1 point appearance

Tough. REA smashed in 5 goals on ARS's net during mid-week but a clean sheet for QPR is also possible and Nolan looks to have the chance to notch in a goal or assist. Rafael may make a difference. I'd pick Nolan and Rafael.

I had Wilson and Jenkinson and used my 2FT to dump them.
Now left with just Ba and Cuellar. I think Ba will probably play.

Probably, but only because I have more pressing problems to un-stupid several bad decisions I made.

MY defence has also been screwed by bad luck with injuries - Buying Gibbs and Wilson the week they got injured certainly hasn't helped either.
