Technical Area

The Technical Area – Fulham’s Attacking Dilemma

The summer departure of Clint Dempsey to Tottenham had many Fantasy managers worried that the goals would dry up for Fulham this term. Martin Jol’s side have shown little ill-effects of the American’s decision to move to pastures new, however, and, with a trio of new arrivals offering alternatives up front, the Cottagers have already found the net on 21 occasions, with only Chelsea (22) and United (26) proving more lethal in front of goal.

Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric have all added a significant threat and with Bryan Ruiz finally settling down after a difficult debut season, the attacking returns have been plentiful. After 10 Gameweeks, the quartet have produced 124 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points between them, with only eight points separating the top (Berbatov, 35) from the bottom (Rodallega, 27). It’s little wonder that in an interview towards the end of last month, Jol admitted he was yet to discern the best front pairing in his preferred 4-4-2 formation:

“What is my best forward line? That is still my problem – and it’s already October. Ruiz is probably my most creative player but on the other hand Berbatov is a very good second striker. It’s like a luxury problem. The thing is we started the season with Moussa Dembele, Bryan Ruiz and Mladen Petric against Norwich and it was probably our best game of my time here. Then we had Rodallega and Berba against West Brom and it was another great game. I feel that Berba is not a typical No.9 and that is why I’m playing Rodallega because he has pace and he stretches defences.”

Berbatov’s Starts So Far…

Intriguingly, last Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Everton was the first time Jol had fielded Ruiz and Berbatov as his front two this season, after the Costa Rican climbed off the bench at Reading to grab a goal and assist and earn himself a starting berth. Berbatov had previously been the deep-lying forward, the creator at the centre of his side’s attacking forays, but Ruiz was handed this role last weekend, with the former United man tasked with leading the line instead.

Fulham v Everton
Berbatov Average Position

As the average position map from Saturday’s game (left) shows, however, Berbatov’s (9) natural instinct to drop deep in search of possession meant he occupied the same area as Ruiz (11) all too often, but with no one ahead of him to stretch the opposition backline, Fulham suffered as a result. Indeed, looking at Berbatov’s average positions for each of his appearances so far (right), only once – in the Gameweek 5 trip to Wigan – has he played so deep; bearing in mind he was the support striker in each of those games, the problem is more apparent and, allied with the stats below, suggests the pair might not be the best-suited starting partnership for Jol.

By some distance, Berbatov saw less of the ball when alongside Ruiz than in any of his appearances in the Fulham first XI so far. The Bulgarian managed just 47 touches, almost half the number of his previous match away to Reading, and 22 less than his previous low of 69 in the Gameweek 8 home win over Villa; Ruiz, on the other hand, had 80 touches – more indicative of Berbatov’s previous level.

Berbatov’s Fantasy owners will also be a little concerned with the fact he had just 17 touches in the final third – the least number in a home match by some distance and, while this mirrored his previous season low at Wigan, the Bulgarian’s involvement in the DW encounter afforded him a touch every 1.1 minutes – this figure dropped to 2 minutes on Saturday, compared to Ruiz’s 1.2.

Indeed, Berbatov received a pass every 4.1 minutes against Everton and made just 24 successful passes all game – once again, these totals were significantly lower than any of his previous starts, with Ruiz recording 2.4 and 46 respectively. Worryingly, the Bulgarian made just six successful passes in the final third – his previous two home matches afforded him a combined tally of 43, with his previous low at the Cottage 16.

In terms of threat, Berbatov –despite playing as the furthest forward – had his worst game for Fulham. He managed just three touches in the box, compared to 16 over his previous two home games, and had a season low for both overall shots and attempts in the box. Bearing in mind the least he had previously managed all season was three attempts, it’s fair to say that Saturday – despite his assist for Steve Sidwell’s goal – was something of a disappointment. As Jol mentions above, Berbatov isn’t a typical centre-forward and needs someone in front of him to stretch the opposition backline, allowing the Bulgarian more space to manoeuvre and room to drift into. With Ruiz tucked in behind him, it simply didn’t happen.

Berbatov’s Forward Partners

In terms of game time, Jol’s faith in Berbatov is obvious – the Bulgarian has finished every game he has started for Fulham and, when fit, will surely be the first name on his manager’s team sheet. Over his five first XI appearances, the former United man has been partnered with Rodallega three times, while Petric and Ruiz have both afforded a single opportunity. Looking at the key attacking stats in each of those matches, it’s intriguing to see the difference:

PartnerChancesPen Box TchsShotsShots (Box)
GW4 (WBA)Rodallega3 (2+1)16 (10+6)13 (7+6)8 (5+3)
GW5 (wig)Rodallega4 (2+2)11 (6+5)7 (5+2)6 (4+2)

GW10 (EVE)Ruiz2 (1+1)3 (3+0)4 (1+3)1 (1+0)

At home to West Brom in Gameweek 4, Berbatov and Rodallega created three chances between them, with the Bulgarian edging it by two to one. They had a combined 16 touches in the box, with Berbatov on 10 to his partner’s six, while they racked up 13 shots between them in the 3-0 win; again, Berbatov just edged it by seven to six. Eight of the duo’s efforts came inside the box, with the Bulgarian managing five in a 3-0 win that also saw Rodallega play the full 90 minutes. Berbatov bagged a brace and maximum FPL bonus for a 13 point return.

Jol kept faith in the partnership for the Gameweek 5 trip to Wigan and was rewarded with a 2-1 win, with Rodallega playing all but three minutes of the match against his former club. This time, they both created a couple of chances for team mates and had 11 touches between them in the box, with Berbatov narrowly ahead by six to five. Their goal threat diminished from the previous match, with a combined seven shots, though Berbatov’s stats were almost as strong as the week before – he had five efforts to his partner’s two. Looking at the efforts from close-range, though, there was little difference – the pair produced six attempts inside the box, with Berbatov offering double the Colombian’s tally of two. This time Berbatov grabbed an assist and maximum bonus, returning eight points for his FPL owners.

A Gameweek 8 home clash with Villa saw Rodallega miss out – Petric was the replacement. The Croatian lasted 63 minutes before being hauled off and while Jol’s front two created just a single chance between them, Petric matched Berbatov for touches in the box (six) and total attempts (three), despite playing almost half an hour less in the 1-0 win. Berbatov still offered three shots from close range, just bettering Petric’s tally, but the Bulgarian picked up just two FPL points this time round.

In the 3-3 draw at Reading the following weekend, Rodallega was reinstalled alongside Berbatov but lasted just 58 minutes before being replaced. In spite of this, he still created more chances ( two to one) and has the same number of efforts inside the box (two), though the duo’s combined touches in the box dropped to seven, with the Bulgarian managing only four – with Ruiz replacing Rodallega and Berbatov moving forward, this was perhaps a sign of what was to follow. With another assist picked up in this one, Berbatov picked up six points.

Last weekend’s stats highlight the dilemma Jol now has. Ruiz was also handed 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Everton but his inclusion, and the change of position for Berbatov, definitely came at a cost. Looking at the pair as a partnership, they had three touches in the box over the full 90 minutes – while Berbatov had three, Ruiz failed to register even one. Although the Costa Rican had three shots to his partner’s one, all his efforts were from distance, with his fortunate assist coming from a combination of the goalpost and Tim Howard’s back. Between them, they offered a single effort from inside the box all game, with Berbatov also a little lucky to grab an assist and a five point haul.

Post-match, Jol explained his thinking again after the hosts escaped with a point in a match the Toffees dominated:

“Petric got injured a few weeks ago and I had to do something. I needed another striker, so I started with Hugo Rodallega and Dimitar Berbatov at Wigan and that was OK and Rodallega scored, so I left it, so that cost him his place. It’s all about momentum. If Rodallega scores against Wigan, I want to leave him in. Never change a winning team is the principle.”

While Fulham remain unbeaten in the five matches Berbatov has started, with three wins and two draws, the stats above certainly raise question marks as to Ruiz’s suitability to play alongside him. In terms of FPL returns and overall threat, Rodallega certainly seems to bring out the best in the Bulgarian, with his style complementing Berbatov’s far more efficiently. From touches in the box to overall shots and close-range threat, they look a better balance. More importantly for Fantasy managers are the cold, hard statistics – Berbatov has averaged nine FPL points per start alongside Rodallega, compared to 3.5 without him.

Is there anyone out there thinking its no longer necessary to have a Citeh player despite their good fixtures? If I had Tevez I'd keep but as I don't I have been thinking of getting him in. Recent Citeh form however has caused a re-think. What do you guys think about the need for Citeh cover?

I am thinking of going without City until Silva has had a decent run. I think he is the missing link.

Don't have any right now. Am worried about Tevez because of the high ownership...but apart from that I'm not too concerned at the minute. I want to have either Silva/Tevez eventually. Don't think it's worth breaking your back to get Tevez in just this minute if you don't own him as he might get rotated suddenly and you'll look a fool. In a way I'm sort of praying for that to happen so he'll fall in price and I can plot getting him in again. If not there's always Silva...who I kind of prefer as you don't have that headache you get with the City strikers!

Yeah I remember last week I was almost panicking about not having Tevez. I think its prudent to not go out of your way to get him in especially while Silva is still out. Also I'm wondering if he is perhaps getting a bit tired

I'm no expert but I think Tevez's role as a striker has been diluted a bit because of Silva's absence. I feel they're using him much more as the creator. As he's more creative than any of the others strikers...who you'd maybe say are strikers in their 'pure' form. Tevez doesn't seem to get a lot of chances lately...I could be wrong...I think his assists have kept him looking like great value but is that temporary because Silva is out? This assisting side of his game...

I wonder whether he will go back to being the striker who scored 3 in 3 games at the start...? I wonder also will we see him being benched more when Silva gets back as they don't rely on him so heavily...will be interesting to see....I think while these questions are unanswered it's worth being a little cautious about it all.

I'm a firm believer than having a player only for his team's sake will usually end in tears. Currently only have Tevez, and will drop him too should I fins better use of the money elsewhere. Even if they where Sunderland anf QPR players (bloody unlike though).

The 'cover' issue is useful if the player and team in question are on form. Tevez has had a great run and that run could continue but of late Citeh have been a tad average so in this case 'cover' may not be necessary. A week back Caz & Arsenal had similar questions around them

If the player as good form it is not cover as per say. And if you get a player because his team is in form, but player form is meh, tou are just doing yourself a huge disfavor imo. Personally I think this cover concept is just a tiny load of bollox 🙂 Cringe every time I see it, let alone hear it on the pod. Only time it is useful imo, is when you want cover from a good defence/cs producers.

I don't like doing an 8pt hit usually.. but i'm pretty set on these three transfer

    Bale > Maloney

    Kolarov > Sagna

    Ba > RVP

now my initial plan was to spread it over 2 weeks and leave RVP until next week and save the 4pts, but maybe it's best getting him in now vs Vila and doing all three at once? and with Ba being a slight injury doubt, he may not play

    what do you guys think?

8 point hit I just don't like especially when its losing a player like Bale who can go and score 20 points any time he wants and then to go and shift two other players who can get 10+ any time they play makes it even worse! Granted Kolarov isn't guaranteed match time but surely you knew that when you brought him in?

with Kolarov it was a stupid decision that wasn't thought through haha, although at first he played left mid and i was chuffed, then to get subbed at HT

It was backs to the wall, but they didn't have too many clear cut chances that made it a total fluke. We were never going to go toe to toe with them, and better teams than us havn't tried and still failed. Sometimes spirit, bit of lucky and playing to their weaknesses, how little they are, (no pun intended) if they struggle at set pieces, got to try take advantage.

Worth a hit to do Barfa (have Ba) & Yaya out for Santi & Fellani? Or is it best to do just Santi and wait for next week to avoid the hit/see if Fellani gets a yellow.

Normally I'd say yes...but for some reason...with Barfa and Yaya's fixtures...2 home games in a row...it doesn't seem a great time to sell either...then again I do believe the latter 2 are looking like better options overall.

Yeah I can understand the thinking...I have both at the minute. Just bought Fellaini too. Had Caz for a bit. I don't know if I'd sell both for a hit to be honest. It's a really 'go with your gut' situation. I think most of us would go with Fellaini/Caz on form but when you have those 2 players going into 2 home games it's also nice to see them as differentials...particularly Barfa. It's a tricky one!

Injury strikes again, make that a nice 6 players I have brought in who have immediately got injured, all in a row..

Anyways, hopefully Simpson makes it to break this dubious record.

    Begovic

    Wilkinson, Baines(VC), Simpson

    Morrison, Bale, Dempsey, Maloney

    Rooney, Ba, Aguero (C)

    Tremmel, Hoilett, Cuellar, Wisdom

Have 0.4 in the bank and will probably do as planned, Dempsey to Mata. Cazorla fixtures are tempting though.

Anyways, how about it? The captaincy choice is close, Ba, Aguero and Baines all having a nice shout.

Of course he'll score goals - so will Odemwingie and Holt - but that isn't the question. (c) is the question; for that, you need scoring ability *and* reliability. I imagine Kun to get there, but he's not a 'safe' choice at this mo.

You're saying - even a AM - Rooney with United against Villa is more likely to score less than a heretofore rotation-prone striker vs. Tottenham?

You can disagree, surely, but a Roon (c) is not an incomprehensible advisement for captain.

Sorry, it's just this statement: 'Kun isn’t a good (c) choice for any game. Not this year'

I agree right now he's a risky captaincy option. But he will be a good captaincy option once the rotation madness stops. I think it has a lot to do with the Champions league and how they were saving him for it.

I got the jist, it would take a real die hard united fan to write Aguero completely off for the season 🙂

Though Mancini is doing a good job of it, little off topic but imo City have the better squad, United the far better manager. That is coming from a pool fan.

The fact Mancini does not seem to know his best team yet is a little nuts.

FPL wise, Ba may solve the conundrum for the armband if he is fully fit, West Ham have a few defenders out and Ba is pretty much a one man show at Newcastle attacking wise so far this season.

@ Brian:I wouldn't disagree with your basic analysis of the teams. I might add 'squad unity/belief' as an additional benefit for Utd ... that's a inhibitor of City realizing it's potential in regard to its quality of players/size of squad.

That may also be making selection difficult for Mancini - factoring in psyches/egos/willingness to work for the team along with fitness, quality, and tactical strength/position.

And the reason I avoided Ba a s choice is his lingering 😕 over his fitness. If fit, he'd surely be a quality choice for (c).

Mata is probably the better long term option, if Ba struggles for fitness, Giroud may be a good route to Arsenal fixtures if they click.

Not that id be rushing out Ba!

Aguero, got him last week, it's a risky venture, he will come good, World Class, it's a matter of when.

Lads I need advice on how I'll get in RVP.

I've narrowed it down to unfortunately having to do Tevez > RVP and then drop either Caz or Baines

    Jaask (Fed)
    Baines Clyne Ridgewell Hangeland Cuellar
    Mata Bale Caz Pienaar Guthrie
    Ba Tevez Berba

I'll do some tidying up over the next few weeks as my def is average, but I've just gotta have RVP.

Downgrading Baines is my best option, right?

Thanks for all your advice guys. Ended up doing Bale > Michu and Tevez > RVP. Baines stays.

My lack of team value limits me, and although I'd rather wait a couple of weeks and see how Cazorla gets on I just can't afford to.

      Appreciated

    Hi all,

    Little advice please 🙂

Instead if a long winded email. I will sum it up as...

Do u think it better to get cheap (good prospect) defender instead of say Rafa this week.
Meaning I get a bit more cash (£1- £1.5m) for a mid transfer next week! Or am I better to get a more expensive def and cheap mid (sub £5.2)??

It's hypothetical but what will be best long term this season?!

Hmmm. I actually think Rafael and a cheaper midfielder is better. Sterling and Maloney both look great options in the 5 million range. In the midpriced range: Fellaini, Michu, and Nolan look the best to me, but Michu and Nolan have horrendous fixtures, Fellaini and Michu are a game a way from a suspension.

        Thanks so much.
It is so easy to over analyze in this game. As I already have Michu and Fella I am walking a tight rope. I like Maloney, McAnuff and Sterling as options...

        But which one(s)?

I personally like Maloney. Wigan look lively he's at the heart of everything and he's got a share of set pieces and corners and penalties. On the other hand, it's still Wigan...

          I like Sterling, myself.

And I think you're clouding your analysis when you think of transfers as "best long term this season."

I'd suggest thinking in the medium-term for most players - say, 4-7 weeks ahead. Fixtures change, injuries occur, etc. Sometimes that can help refine your choices. Just a thought.

Well it totally depends on your team, who you thinking of getting Rafa instead of, who you gonna take out in midfield, then u know how much money you'll be spending...

Identify the players that are underperforming that you no longer want n figure out who you want instead of them. If you think you wanna replace 4 players and don't wanna take any hits then you gotta be happy with the players you bring in for at least 4 weeks.
Rafas fixtures look good for 4-6 weeks but if that stops you from getting Cazorla it might not be the right transfer.
If you want cheapish defenders get ones that rotate well like Stoke/WestBrom, Stoke/WestHam, Sunderland/Newcastle, and Norwich/Wigan

      Raf and Maloney.

Maloney/Sterling look as good as any 6mil mid.

How cheap is your good prospect defender?

Gorkks! Just figured out that if I get Rafa I can't afford RVP next week.
So 5.8 would be my limit for a def.
Bale or Caz would next wk go for Maloney or Sterling to fund the rest. Guthrie is needing an upgrade but will have zero funds by the to do so.
That may change however... Injuries etc..

Kinda want RVP, cant figure if hes worth the cash so looking for other ideas/suggestions.

I suppose i would have to keep Crouch looking at their respective games. Although i have never been in a position where i've had the pleasure of owning Crouch tbh.

Berbatov is up against the two toughest defences in the league in his next 2 games.

yes..and i will wait till friday.. i guess.. if Ba is not fit by that time, i will transfer him out atleast for this week..

but my thought is going on some other way...fulham have tough fixtures, but berbatov is good against any defence..

crouch has some good fixtures, but hasn't come up good as far as FPL is concerned in the recent weeks..

so still gutted on who to sell and who to buy..
