Watchlist

The Watchlist – Shaun Maloney

As the stars of the Fantasy football firmament revolve over the course of the season, we frequently find ourselves tightening our belts in one area so that we may lay on the fatted calf in another. The grave is ever beside the throne for premium picks and, as the fortunes of the rival pretenders wax and wane, an underclass of budget kingmakers is ever at hand to furnish us with the means of acquiring the most seasonable allegiances.

Those currently destitute of a certain Dutchman might be particularly anxious to lose a few pounds in their midfield midriff and, whilst Raheem Sterling represents the most fashionable celebrity diet , Wigan’s Shaun Maloney is uniquely placed to offer both an alternative and an adjunct to the lithe Liverpool wing man.

Tucked in just behind Arouna Kone in Wigan’s 3-4-2-1 system, the Scot has produced attacking returns in five of his 10 games so far – registering a goal and four assists for a total of 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. Sterling, by comparison, has registered a goal and two assists for a grand total of 33. With penalties in Maloney’s locker, plus a share of free kicks and corners, it may come as a surprise that he is currently the cheaper of the two: tipping the scales at 5.0 in FPL (although 6.9 and a striker in the Sky Sports game) compared to Sterling’s 5.2 and 4.3 respectively.

Playing for an unglamorous side and sporting an unglamorous haircut seldom yield column inches, and the gulf in ownership is a stark testament to Maloney’s comparative invisibility. Owned by just 1.6% of players compared with Sterling’s 15.6%, the Scot represents an out-and-out differential opportunity, and seems likely to remain usefully ensconced under the mainstream radar.

Last week’s assured win at White Hart Lane demonstrates the Latics’ capacity to go pound for pound with the big boys, and with home ties against West Brom and Reading in the next three, the immediate future looks bright for their attacking assets. In the medium term, the Wigan fixture list is more of a mixed bag, but a Maloney/Sterling rotation equates to (WBA, WIG, RDG, MCI, SOT, QPR, AVL, FUL) up to Gameweek 18 – the cusp of the winter wildcard season.

Offering perhaps the most potent union of open play and set piece threat in the budget bracket, yet boasting low ownership and strong fixture rotational potential – Shaun Maloney could be the key that unlocks many a transfer dilemma over the coming weeks.

Who do you think will win the Bpl & Ucl this season?

I really think Man Utd have a chance of winning both. They will definitely win the bpl imo.

Chelsea need a good striker to put chances away, if they get Falcao, things will get interesting.

There is something not right at City, which is resulting in poor displays. They dont seem to be playing as a team at all, not much creativity or spark. Feels like Mancini going to get the sack soon!

    Ucl contenders are Madrid/Utd/Barca/Bvb/Bayern imo.

would love the double from united, very difficult to do. think city will look good once silva is back if he can get back to his early season form of last year. tevez and nasri have looked good filling in that role but those two and aguero need to be feeding off silva and scoring more goals.

Interesting debate on RVP vs Rooney earlier on the rotation risk.

I’m seriously thinking of downgrading one to the other after this week to fund a premium MID and then buying back The Dutchman in the Jan WC.

With Rooney still on PKs he represents significantly more value and given their fixtures before the WC, he is likely to play up front more often and I think with his injury spell earlier, he is less likely to be rested.

That would mean RVP/Pienaar, Fellaini Vs Rooney/Mata, Silva.

I think in these fixtures there will be plenty of PKs that will keep Shrek’s score on par with RVP. The other potential advantage is the differential that could make up some significant ground on the leaders with cookie cutter teams.

What are your thoughts good punters?

I got RVP out last year when he was coming up to a tough run of fixtures and planned to get him back in, that week he scored 3 away to Chelsea and went on a scoring spree... Mini leagues over for the year and no recovering. Dont do it.

Fair point but i think its too early in the season to go without RVP. With the form he is in and UTD through in the CL he is less of a rotation risk. I think it will back fire badly.

His family was experiencing financial troubles, and needed money. He tried applying for many jobs, but they just didn't quite work out. After ending up in the drug business to support his family, a deal went bad and he was shot, landing him in the hospital. The night his family arrived to check on him, the same shooter made his way to his room, and murdered his wife and 3 children, and somehow managed to evade police.

Months after this incident, Ralph, the same chicken who was in the hospital and witnessed his family's murder, was finally released. He had nothing to live for, nothing to look forward to in the future. He took up alcohol abuse for some time, until realizing what truly had to be done. He began tracking down his family's killer, and with each day spent, he became closer and closer to discovering the dealer's whereabouts. One day, he finally figured out who it was.

As he arrived at the killers' home, he took one last deep breath, then stormed in.

After fighting through many of the dealers' body-gaurds, Ralph finally reached the notorious drug dealing murder, Froghorn Leghorn. As a bloody battle ensued, it was clear who the winner would be..

As Ralph staggered out of the destroyed home, bloodied, yet victorious, he realized something. All the tracking, all the killing, all the bloodshed he had created, was all in vain. He realized that taking Froghorn's life didn't, and wouldn't, bring his family back.
Finding himself dumbfounded, he began to trot, head down, through the field where the bad drug deal happened, almost a year ago now. He took one last deep breath, looked at the stars, and took his first step on the road. This was it he decided, he was finally going to reunite with his family again once more.

As the headlights raced towards him, he heard his family in unison whisper to him "You're finally home Ralph, you're finally home."

The outlook is very rosey. You know he's always going to be an attacking threat if he plays. Question is how many clean sheets are utd goin to keep in this good run? The last time they had such an easy run back end of last reason Evans was an absolute steal keeping cleaned most weeks. Those were the days.

the thing is that united have plenty of offensive weapons but defense has been questionable. rafael going up the pitch all the time is a serious liability that opposing teams can exploit. the moment they lose/draw a game because of this rafael is going to find himself on the bench.

anyone considering doubling rvp and rooney in their teams?

man utd have great fixtures and all the other players really are much more of a rotation risk than the 2 mentioned above

Cisse preserved for PL yes, don't think it gives anything away on Ba at all.

Whether we play 442, 433 or 4231, in the PL, we'll always start with 2 of our 3 strikers (Ba, Cisse and Shola), mainly because even when we play with one up top and attacking wingers, none of Obertan, Marveaux etc. have done well enough to be considered for PL starts imo.

Rotating attacking players is not a good idea for me.

Example last week: would you play Sterling (NEWCASTLE) or Maloney (Spurs) ?
Neither Sterling/Maloney is good enough to play as 4th Mid and surely you will miss some big scores in the bench like last week too.

I only like to rotate cheap defenders at home to get few CS.
