The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

    Jaaskelainen (begovic)
    Rafael, Baines, Demel (nelson)(baird)
    Fellaini, Michu, Sterling, Mata (k.nolan)
    Van Persie, Berbatov, Suarez

Pretty happy with my team and life in general.

Team value: £104.6m In the bank £2.8m

Thinking of taking some of my top guys out for a couple beers. After a successful start to the first 11 weeks of the season, I think we’ve earned it. Sure, there’s times they could have played better. But there were also times I could have made better decisions. Sticking with Danny Graham too long, and let’s not forget about that Van Persie/Rooney up front experiment just recently. Anyway, I have to be overall satisfied with where we are. Good job men! Good dam job. Now lets go get that beer Fellaini, tell me all about your hair.

Sweet!! Congrats. I guess the only place I might look would be towards a Stoke defender for this upcoming run. Yes Nelsen is 4.0, but Cameron at 4.6 more likely to net you a six-pointer if you need to sub him in because somebody fails to play.

    So what do people think????

    Pablo Hernandez at Newcastle
    or
    Shaun Maloney at Liverpool

I know they have Maloney listed as 75%, but kinda have to think that is a bogus int'l wk injury

When Walcott plays, he moves deeper. Walcott is likely to play more, so Cazorla isn't worth the cash imo. Mata, Silva and Bale are better options.

I don't know if Silva/Bale are exceptionally better options. Cazorla has more goals in him than Silva and he scored as many as Bale did last season in La Liga. I think Walcott might be a better option for obvious reasons. I think he plays deep most games but my biggest concern is Walcott taking set pieces off him. I don't like this at all!

I fear Cazorla won't be the only one going forward from the midfield players. I bet you will find Wilshire and Arteta getting in good positions as well when Arsenal lay siege to the opposition defence. Walcott will always be buzzing around into dangerous goal scoring and crossing positions as well. Giroud is also very good with his head.

Of course, they're all capable of attacking returns really. Cazorla has performed the best out of all their attackers so far however. Which is ironic as he's not extremely attacking all the time. Personally I think Cazorla is a bit of a genius and if he was to go forward more he'd get so many goals...he just also likes to dictate play from the middle of the park too because he is so good at controlling the ball/dribbling/passing. He's a pretty versatile player really. I think when Wilshere and Arteta start backing him up from the centre...he will have a bit more license to move forward more where he can be lethal with through balls and shots.

The frustrating thing is he seems better at scoring spectacular goals than simple goals (see: the QPR miss)

      I'm keeping faith.

Binned Mata and Bale this season too early and it cost me.

At some point he'll get a 15 point haul and will be on par with the other top midfielders (he's only 13 points behind the others, so not exactly massively flopping).

I say give him one more chance this weekend. if he has another bad game and silva or bale catch my eye then I'm swapping next week.

Despite the negative reviews on here he still has a good score overall and that's without arsenal firing properly.

Yeah he's had an excellent start to the season without Arsenal doing particularly well. An upturn in form might see his returns increase.

Well he has great fixtues, it's whether or not you can be patient.

Walcott seems to be the flavour of the month (although too inconsistent for me),
Mata is another option if you dont have him (who by all accounts is awesome at the minute).
Valenica is a wild option maybe wait for an increase in form.

Unconvinced. I got in too early a few weeks back and constantly been disappointed by him now playing.

Suprisingly though in the last 5 games Aguero has only started 2 games, but his score is still 22 points.

Villa could be the last rotation threat if they don't win at Madrid also, so I am just riding it out at the moment, as at some point he will be come must have (hope it's soon).

    Any views on Ferguson-esque strategy?

Would you downgrade your 5th midfielder (Sterlo, Maloney, Gera, Mcanuff, Noble etc) if player like Obertan/Guthrie falls to 4.0 (presently 4.2) and use the cash to upgrade your 4.0 defenders to 4.5-5.0 ones ? for example, from new, wba, ful,nor - which might have CS potentials

Very true. Actually I think its good to have at least one rubbish player that you always bench so you avoid leaving lots of points on the bench. Kind of why I've kept noble and naturally he was on the bench when he scored twice in one game and got 3 baps! 🙁

A 4.5 midfielder playing off the striker, starting the season with a double gameweek and a suitable 5th midfielder option who could step in with a couple of points if needed.

Still think it was a sound choice and it's difficult to legislate for him falling out with the manager when you rewind to GW1.

At his current price he is a bit like Ferguson last year, yet I still feel he may get back into the side at some point and that could coincide appropriately with another double gameweek. He'll go in the Janurary wildcard if he's not playing and perhaps even over the Xmas period when the rotation really sets in, but not in a rush to sell him for now, just monitoring the situation.

It was a good idea at the start of the season but people should've swapped him for Sterling at the earliest opportunity, even if that meant taking a dreaded hit.

Wildcarded in GW3 when Guthrie was still an option and brought in Sterling too to pump the cash around in other key positions. Tend to play Sterling most weeks (last week an exception) and have avoided going for Suarez thus far - Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie has been enough for me to do well.

Very important to spread the coverage over as many big teams as possible, without necessarily doubling and trebling up on Mid/For positions - cast the net.

Obviously if the big teams get a double gameweek then fill your boots, but one from Man C, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton is enough and you can tap into the points potential from each side. Still difficult to have representation from every good team. For now I haven't covered Tottenham, but would like Bale, but then you lose a Cazorla (say) and then don't have Arsenal cover and I certainly don't want to sell Mata.

I would fancy Suarez and Barfa to score higher than Silva and Crouch.

Strange, but something is making me consider bringing in Ben Arfa this week. Had him for his initial goals and then sold shortly after and thinking it could be one of those lucky players who perform when they are in your side and Newcastle have a decent home game and will want to put that last result behind them and I think Pardew will encourage him to have a few shots. He takes the corners from one side too and if you have a decent front three with no room for Ba it's a way in to cover Newcastle. Plus if Ba isn't on the pitch I seem to remember a Pardew comment that Ben Arfa would be the other option to take a penalty.

Newcastle still have a good set of fixtures and he's less than £8m and Newcastle are capable of a good run.

Back to the original question - Crouch to Suarez for me and that's without needing to list the positives of signing Suarez and the negatives of having Crouch.

No No No. Just not one of the deluded Arsenal fans that think we're screwed if Wenger goes.

Does no-one remember George Graham winning 2 League titles, 2 League Cups, 1 FA Cup and a European Cup Winner Cup in Copenhagen in an 8yr spell.

Wenger was great 1996-2004/5, but no longer and Arsenal will be great again a decade from now.

Time to move on. To be fair the board are a joke at the moment - success off the pitch before success on it, but Wenger is culpable for some awful footballing decisions in the last 6 years or so and I can't forgive the way that Invincible team was broken up within 2/3 years. There was a winning formula with big strong characters who dominated games and instead went for little midget with potential. We have also had to listen to his waffle of trying to make us believe many poor players are World Class. Denison, Vela, Fabianski and Bendtner are just a handful - truly awful players.

                  Crazy.

I think it's easier to question when you don't watch Arsenal in the same way I don't really question what was going on at Liverpool last season but see that Dalglish was sacked yet won a trophy and got to the final in the other. Well that sums up our last 5/6 years without the trophy, yet Dalglish got sacked.

For me, I don't like the Champions League and qualification to it has enabled Wenger to somehow be deemed to have had relative success. Yet had the entry requirements stayed as just the league winner or even the runner-up too then we would either have had to replace the manager as the board would have been financially affected or the club has a whole would have realised that much greater investment in the team was needed. As it stands, Arsenal fans have lost out and the football is nowhere near as good as a few seasons ago when you could least argue 'we play nice football'.

It's a shame because I genuinely liked the bloke, but something has to change. Look at Chelsea last year, if they hadn't have sacked AVB and say chose to give him a few years. They would not have won the Champions League.

To be fair it's so grim at Arsenal for what you have to pay, it's only the fact it's in your blood from going as a kid that you stay with them. You wouldn't pay £50 at a restaurant and be served a load of dross and keep going back, but then that is the difference with football and the clubs prey on that. The clubs base their approach on finance and if fans made that same (non-emotional) decision then attendances at the Emirates would be massively lower.

So yep he has to go.

Dude, every manager buys bad players though, a 50% success rate is usually the sign of a good manager. Fact is Arsenal have been making a net transfer spend profit for years and when Wenger was spending money, he was very successful. Rather than ripping it up and starting again would it not be better to just give Wenger some money to spend? I can't fathom anyone doing a better job than Wenger with what Arsenal are currently (not) spending.

          Just looking at forwards:

Player mins goals assists bonus points pts/min
          Suarez 450 3 2 6 33 0.073
          Tevez 411 1 2 5 25 0.061
          Aguero 264 2 1 4 22 0.083
          Dzeko 120 3 0 3 18 0.150
          RVP 446 3 4 8 40 0.090
          Rooney 409 2 4 6 30 0.073
          Hernand 84 3 1 3 21 0.250

Suarez looking better option for points as lone forward for LRC, only RVP better option.
Thinking of doing Tevez to Suarez.......

If Aguero got more game time he'd be scoring big & wonder why the United & City managers don't play Dzeko & Hernandez more?

Hernandez and Dzeko have scored and will continue to score plenty goals coming off the bench. But they've had many games when they've started and looked bang average. Thing with scoring from the bench is that even though they are staking a claim to start more often, it's a catch 22 situation as they're also enhancing their reputation as supersubs so the managers would be more willing to utilise them as that because they know it works.

I'm seeing lots taking punts on Hernandez on here, which is just silly imo. May be good for 1 or 2 weeks, but there's no guarantee he'll score when starting, much more likely to coming off the bench against tired legs. And ofcourse the main point, waste of a transfer down the line.

Agree with Suarez being a great option though especially with the Xmas period coming as you know he'll be nailed on for 90 without any rotation headaches.

Means nothing. Just look at who has the fixtures, who is in reasonable form, who is likely to play the full game, who is on free-kicks, corners, penalties and is picking up bonus points, watch games and see who is creating chances that someone has converted and who is going close themselves. Work out how much each player is and whether there is some value. Ensure you have decent captaincy candidates, if the opportunity presents itself look for players out of position or generally playing further up the pitch during games than their starting position would suggest. Allow a degree of rotation in your squad but don't saddle yourself with 8 strong players in midfield and upfront that leaves you stuck on who to bench. Keepers shouldn't be expensive, but ideally rotate and then when double gameweek opportunities present themselves take advantage. Seriously limit the number of transfers you make. Penalty points are severe but shouldn't be avoided at all costs. Always do your best to get an eleven out. Go back to basics and if no-one was available to play you would make 11 transfers at a cost of 40pts and back your team to score more than 40pts each week. Don't let others teams in your mini-league affect who you buy/sell/captain as there are so many variables over the season and just get the players that you think will score well. Try to make your transfers on a Friday so you know the team news. Generally try to cover as much as possible of the above and your team should fair well.
