The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

Really? Do you want Reading and Sunderland stinking out your squads for several weeks. Or will you bring them in or get rid of them for hits? Probably the latter. Its totally pointless.

no - but one or two would be smart - good luck when 1.8 million people are watching the last game of the round with players and your watching the game with none.

You have to think beyond one GW. Generally such players tend to remain in the squad for several weeks. I have no doubt that to look at it as just one week I'd be on the wrong side of the fence. But to look at it holistically (all the weeks they are in your team) I would prefer to have players I actually want long term.

I think having Gorkss is enough. Thinking of getting AJ, but I really don't know if it's worth it. Only benefit I see of having them is getting a good score for H2H and cup matches, but you're screwed in the long run by losing value and having players with bad fixtures.

Think Cazorla will score less in coming weeks. Walcott in form and Giroud, Podolski making up the front 3 - reckon Caz will play deeper in a playmaker role and be less involved.

England quick to hype up another player who is destined to fail.

Wilfried Zaha the next. I am sure he is a good player but all the comments and articles make him out to be better than he is. Even if he was any good he will never succeed to the potential he may if he was spanish.

All hype in an attempt to give the nation hope, get people excited. The consequences are inevitable, he will "earn" his big money move to man city or chelsea and end up in obscurity. He will have everything, the big salary, the big club, the england cap etc.

He will have everything come to him so early he won't care enough and will never actually live up to any of the hype

My point is the English media are quick to hail the next big thing leading to their demise either due to the pressure of the hype or due to the player getting too big headed.

In other countries it's not as bad, sure they get hyped but not as desperately as in England.

All media hypes. You think Argentina doesn't annoint 'the new Messi' every two weeks?

But that wasn't my question: you suggested that the English were less likely, as a footballing nation, to realize the full potentiality of their players as compared to Spain.

I guess we're forgetting that, up to only a few years ago, Spain could lace up their boots correctly in major tournaments ...

What you're saying in an extremely roundabout way is that he'll be so fickle that he'll end up choosing his native country over England cos the pressure won't be as great there. Fair play, you insight into the Ivorian sporting media is wonderful.

Right. The pressure in Ivory Coast is just the threat of rioting and civil war if the game goes badly, whereas in England the consequences include scandalously out-of-focus paparazzi pics in the Sun.

Team at the moment for GW12 (BANK = £4.6m, 1 free transfer):

    Foster(CHE)
    Rafael(nor) Baines(rdg) Santon(SWA)
    Sterling(WIG) Bale(ars) Fellaini(rdg) Michu(new)
    Ba(SWA) Van Persie(nor) Berbatov(SUN)

subs - Begovic, Demel, Cuellar, Maloney

As you can see i have plenty in the bank. Was thinking Maloney/Michu > Silva as i'm going to find it hard to drop any of my front 3 to make way for Aguero. I still have no Chelsea cover though 🙁

What ya reckon? Silva seems like a very good differential to me with under 5% ownership. Well, compared to Hazard & Mata anyway

Chelsea are topping the "bad fixtures" ranking, so now more than ever is the time to ignore the "cover" myth.

I think Caz has to go...

I've been waiting patiently for what seems forever and yet he doesn't produce. Finally went him to Fellaini this week and it feels good.

He has had 3 blanks out 4 starts and the one goal was in injury time when the game was dead. His team has had a 3-3 draw and a 6-1 win and yet he only comes out of them with an assist. This makes me think he is just not an FPL player.

So yeah, Cazorla to Mata sounds good

What would be everyone's ideal front 8 be (with a realistic budget)?

    Mine:
    Mata, Silva, Bale, Fellaini (Sterling)
    RVP, Suarez, Berbatov

Walcott+Ba instead of Bale+Berbatov may be an option if you wanted Arsenal and Newcastle cover.
I really would like this front 8 as it has cover from all the top sides except for Arsenal cover and even that isn't all that essential

I almost have this front 8 except for Pienaar over Silva, Kaca over Sterling and Ba over Suarez

I've had him for weeks now. bought him 2 weeks after the 20 point stormer he had. I like a bit of a gamble and as you said, OOP at man city with a good eye for goal???? Should be a killer defender with a good price. I'm going to keep him for a little longer to see what happens

Might not be a bad shout. I can see him picking up another strong gameweek, maybe against the Villa, and then as you say "sitting around" for another few gws. If he doesn't perform soon I reckon you'd wanna save the cash and upgrade Crouch though. Team looks good though mate.

Already made the changes for the week (I'm one of those take some hits first third of season to fund my future super team) I have taken out Cazorla, risky with the possible tottenham-Arsenal goalfest but I've just got sick of him and think there are fresher faces out there atm. Also took out BA and crouch. Again a little risky with BA but I think hte new changes will work well

            Cazorla - Sterling
            Ba - Berbatov
            Crouch - RVP

Next week I will be looking at cleaning up my defence with some of the spare cash I will save 😀 By the way, good bloody score for you mate, must be doing something right

Not a bad shout. RVP too neccessary to ignore imo. And I got rid of Ba a couple of weeks ago, not sure the Toon will be so successful this season.
I'm not against taking a few hits, did so a couple of weeks ago and it served me well. Although I'd like to see how many points I'd be on if I hadn't made any transfers...
And thanks, getting some good luck atm with bringing players in at the right time.

I don't see the harm in taking some hits to build up value in a team and give a thought out advantage to a gameweek. I've already taken the sting out of tail by owning RVP and haven't needed to downgrade my midfield much

I've had it on Wisdom all week, but I'm not convinced Rodgers will stick to 3-5-2 for Wigan, and I think with Jose playing well, Wisdom might just be the first to get the boot...

Yeh it's 50/50 in my eyes, he changed it against chelsea but that might of just been because it was a tough game..

I suppose if you do use Wisdom he's never likely to come off the bench for a 20min cameo, so if you start him and he doesn't play the auto subs will do the business and the other are decent alternatives

it's a bit madness if you alter a team, like you said, that is already stable at the back, i.e teams with template Baines + Rafa + Cameron, or with the likes of Saylor, Hange, etc.

    Does anyone know how :

    a) How long McCarthy (Reading GKer) is out injured for, and
    b) Whether he is likely to replace Federici when he gets back.

Reason I ask, is that I have Federici, and I was thinking about doing Jaask -> Migs next week, but if Federici is likely to retain the GK spot then I'd have 2 keepers with DGWs in the same week, which would be a little bit silly...

Yeah, thinking about it. Not overly keen on keeping Jaask with WHU's next 7-8 fixtures, and Migs plays for a decent defence and has great fixtures, including a DGW. I think I'll either get Migs, or take a punt on De Gea - which do you reckon?

If I go De Gea, I might get Larsson or Fletcher for the DGW also...

if u are feeling a bit punty, I'd say yeah to double up SUN with fixtures of WBA, QPR, nor, DGW. I could see potentially 3-4 CS out of those 5 matches

DDG is a good option too *just checked his price*

Yeah, De Gea seems nailed on now and is the cheapest route into the MUN defence, who also have great fixtures. The only tough game they have is mcy away in SUN/REA's DGW, so would be sweet if Federici was still first choice and I could play him that week!

Rafael at 6.4 is now basically too expensive and no longer a bargain. I've made 0.4m off him though so I ain't complaining. I'd go for Evans at 5.8 as a cheaper alternative if fit.

      Suarez...meh!

It's out of my price range currently the way my team is set up. I don't think it's worth sacrificing anyone to get him. Especially with a suspension around the corner. He's a good player albeit erratic and generally unlikable.

Ba at 7.7 (purchase price) to me has been great value and I am willing to give him more time with good fixtures. Taking a hit to get Suarez in right now would be ridiculous in the context of my team.

I also think 7.7 vs. 10.0 for players that scores all of their sides goals is good. And Newcastle are about the same level as Liverpool if not slightly stronger. Suarez has had a consistent run but there is other factors to take into account.

    WIDLCARD ACTIVE

    Jaask (Mignolet)

Reid - Cameron - Rafael (Gorkss, Cuellar)

Nolan - Michu - Fellaini - Silva (Sterling)

    RVP - Berba - Suarez

    ---
I had Aguero in and was going to captain him this week, but swapped him out for RVP since he might be rotated. Means I had to sacrifice midfield a bit - I would have been able to put Mata in for Michu.Currently 0.2M in bank. Look ok?

Hey guys, this is unrelated to FFS but I think I may need some opinions and help on this.

Currently looking for a housemate. Just posted an ad online and I've got three immediate responses. All of them wants an inspection on the unit itself. I know for a fact I am going to interview them individually to assess their personality (smoke, drug user, etc.) and see how they are. So, if I were to choose the best, and what about the rest? Am I supposed to tell them off 'Unfortunately, we've got someone coming in already and all blah blah blah...". How do I say?

It's a perfectly fair thing to say that you are using this week (or something) for people to come see the place. Tell them you will reach a decision soon and get back to them. If you find someone you feel comfortable with, you could always call/mail them later that day/next day and say they can move in if they like.

      No rules in this game.

Just be careful they don't rise in price while you are pondering who to transfer in.

Holy sweet Berba-jesus.............was looking at Nolan and Fellaini in, with the money I have gained from Rafael, RVP, Suarez and His Royalness......then I looked at West Hams fixtures......again.

The thing with Sunderland is that if they do ever start winning some footy matches again, and they do start scoring freely, besides Fletcher, where will it come from?

AJ is a dangerous differential......Sessegnon is who excites me most....and then there's Larsson and his set pieces. I would obviously only get one, and the other one/two would blow up.....so I'll more than likely look elsewhere.....regardless of their fixtures and double coming up.

I don't know whether I'd buy him now but I've no intention of selling. He also technically scored against Man City. He's strong at home and finally scored an away goal and should have had an assist but Caroll missed a good chance. He's basically the best value West Ham striker because he plays in the hole and he's a better finisher than Carroll or any other strikers they have. Benayoun has also improved West Ham creatively. It's not like West Ham aren't going to score goals in these fixtures. That would be some barren run. It's true they're awful fixtures but I got Nolan at 6.3 so as long as he keeps justifying his modest price tag he can stay in my team.

        SoonToBeSilvaUnreal alright mate?

I see your point. Yes we Blues all obviously concede he did in fact score against us. I do not completely agree with you though mate......Can see Chelsea, United, and even Liverpool keeping clean sheets against them, and Spurs might even pull it together FINALLY for a single week, at home (doubt it though). He's a bargain, he's a proven player, he's a poacher, he's in the hole, he's all these things......but West Ham are after all ...West Ham, and Big Sams launch it to Carroll all day policy wont work forever, and they certainly wont freely score against the aforementioned teams who will sure enough sort some of the defensive issues out before long.
