The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

Anyone here seen Skyfall? I enjoyed it. I feel like they took a few pages from TDK, but it didn't bother me too much.

I'd give up on RVP if I were you. You might be able to get by on players such as Hernandez who is overdue some serious game time. However if you are determined to get RVP you will need to downgrade Baines and Cazorla to adequate substitutes such as Evans and Nolan. I would also look to upgrade Pienaar who is suffering as a result of the 433 formation Everton are now using.

Yep Pienaar needs to go i agree, just might save that transfer for a couple of weeks as their next two aren't that bad

I could get RVP by doing Bale > Maloney and Ba > RVP

thats with 0.1 spare so it's close.. but you've got a point about leaving RVP out. another reason it in the league i'm most arsed about (its for money) not many people have him, as it's full of liverpool supporters, i think only a handful out of about 15, so i may decide to leave it, just depends on how Ba continues but he's got the fixtures

I think it would be a nice differential to have (especially considering the difficulty to get him in). By being on the other side of the fence you could gain massively if it falls your way.

RVP can possibly be done without. Plenty of other strikers doing the job and I really think Aguero is going to go on a decent run.

I'd say wait till January till you wild card and then take stock and decide RVP or no RVP.

Goodness. Is it just me or are price rises ridiculous this year??? Bravo to any of you who have had RVP, Fellaini, Suarez, Rafael, Mata from the start.

By Xmas how much are these boys gonna cost?

    RVP 14.5 (after this run)???
Suarez 11 (if he kees up his scoring regardless of fixtures)???
    Fellaini 8.5???
Rafael 7 (if he bangs in a goal and keeps assisting with surefire CS coming)???

Ive just made almost 1m (not in selling value of course) almost from some of the above. Wish I had Fellaini in a week or two ago. No chance now 🙁

Fellaini could go back to the DM role if they change their formation back to 4411. Currently its 433 but their defense is suffering as a result.

Nah, I doubt RVP will be that much...he's already owned by a lot of players.
Suarez...no...he has a suspension looming and he's already risen .5m, I'd say potentially 10.5 max if he avoids suspension.
Fellaini won't reach 8.5...again he also has a suspension looming...but rising from 6.5 to 8.5 is unheard of. Remember for instance, Fellaini has already risen .3m this week so all those transfers from now til the weekend will be surplus and the slate will be wiped clean on Saturday. This kind of stuff prevents prices getting out of hand.

Rafael...nah, he'll get rested one game or people will buy the other cheaper Man Utd defenders. But maybe...you never know.

Good lord Fellaini is up to 34percent ownership.

Im not trying to be a male reproductive organ pal, but why such a huge fuss about Suarez' and Fellaini' up coming suspension....when, and even if they come (which surely they will). We are only talking one match correct? One match.

I see your point though. 14m cap for RVP? 8m cap for Fellaini? Reckon Fellaini will have more owners than RVP within a few weeks though....that's for sure.

Yeah just one match...but it's relevant to how high their price might go. As people will probably sell Suarez/Fellaini if they get a ban. Most on here will probably stick but casuals might sell. It's just another reason why their price might not continue to soar.

Yeah he could have more owners for sure!

I think you could justify Suarez at 11, if you look at the price of Aguero and Rooney,

Also Fellaini at 8.5 if you look at the likes of valencia etc

it's just when people see a big increase they immediately think they're not worth it because they have lost out.. where in fact it probably still is worth it (that is if the form continues)

RVP at 14.5 i wouldn't be getting him in, and Rafael at 7 is too much for a defender imo

Mata started off at 9.5, dropped almost a whole million, and now has risen right back to 9.5m

Who could possibly have kept on to Mata from August, bar casuals???

Funny old game this. I could have done HBA to Mata a few weeks back and it would hardly have cost a penny....now it's a country mile away.

I know that's all thanks to everyone chasing points.. obviously there's lots of times where its the right move i.e mata fellaini and others but once any player scores 2 goals he's going to rise shitloads regardless

just got to get the timing right! i got mata just before the spurs game, but still don't have fellaini and don't fancy him at that price with a yellow (hopefully he gets a black and a yellow this w/e) haha

This whole Santi -> Silva, or not, this week is getting tricky. Tried to put a list of Pros & Cons down to aid discussion - any points I've missed? And yay or nay to the transfer?

    Pros:
    (1) Santi is playing midweek for Spain and has a big journey back from Panama on Thursday, before a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday - possible fatigue concerns
    (2) Silva has a prime home fixture this week and he looked in good nick at the w/e.
    (3) Silva should be fresh for the w/e with no midweek international involvement.
    (4) Silva provides MCY attacking coverage (for those of us without any and not willing/able to lose one of our front 3 spots for Aguero/Tevez)
    (5) It gives us another few weeks to decide which Arsenal attacker we want to stick with for GW15 to the Jan wildcard (looking at Walcott/Giroud etc)

    Cons:
    (1) MCY have tough fixtures after this week
    (2) Silva is more of a rotation threat (albeit still small) than Santi
    (3) The North London Derby always has goals.
    (4) It uses a transfer up that we could roll forward and use elsewhere

I have this nagging at me also. That said, Arsenal's next 3 are TOT, avl, eve, so you'd think it's unlikely to be a disaster not having coverage for those games.

I'm 60:40 in favour of doing the transfer at the moment, with either Ba -> Giroud, or Fellaini -> Walcott in GW15 the plan to get Arsenal attacking coverage in time for their sick run of fixtures.

Thats not the worst idea. At this stage Silva is the only serious cover available for Citeh (unless your keen to back Aguero) wheras Arsenal suddenly have 3 viable options (Caz, Walcott, Giroud). So in a funny kind of way I don't mind your logic of allowing yourself time to pick the right Arsenal option in GW15 although that will rule out Caz as an option

So basically if you think Caz is now finished as a serious fantasy option and that Walcott or Giroud would be better then go for it.

Cheers. I have 1.0m in the bank, so could still get Caz back in GW15 for Fellaini, if I can find another 0.8-1.0m via a downgrade elsewhere. Perhaps Taarabt out, or even Ba -> Fletcher 😯 (for their nice run and DGW)

Yeah I'm not sure the transfer is worth it if you plan to buy Caz back in 3 weeks anyway. It'd have to be a 'longterm sell' (a new fantasy concept?). Regarding Ba -> Fletcher it has crossed my mind as a short term option as well so its not crazy.

Yeah, given the choice right now, I think I'd go Walcott or Giroud over Cazorla - cheaper and more likely to score goals imo.

That said, I'm often wrong so a worst case plan to get him back if that view changes, is all it is.

Current plan is below - affordable if a couple of price movements go my way...

                GW12: Santi -> Silva
                GW13: Jaask -> Migs
                GW14: Save

GW12 and GW15 are really the only ones that interest me as they are the ones you have to follow through with. I think the plan is reasonable to have Silva long term and Walcott in GW15 (assuming he is still on fire by then)

I'd say it's unlikely that Silva will rise at the rate he is being bought. Then again, Fridays can be crazy so you never know. But I think he's under the radar a bit.

Santi will probably fall unfortunately but luckily he's not going too fast so we can think this Silva move over a bit.

I'm in the same boat and considering this move. I've been weighing up the pros and cons all week and it's a very tough decision. Especially as I feel buying Silva is more long term than a short term fix. And like you, I will lose value on Santi falling. Which I hate! 😀

Same dilemma here except I have two crunchers.

I need to take a 4 point hit to get him and if I don't do it this week, I won't get another chance since Silva will be out of price range.

I am curious to see how this GW turns out. So many 'injuries' and most of the big teams have relatively easy match-ups. The North London derby. It should be a very explosive weekend all around.

How is everyone going to fit Falcao in on February 1st??? 🙂 🙂 🙂

Jesus, Uniteds fixtures show no sign of slowing down right well into the new year!!! It's sad to say this, but at this rate, they will piss this league, and that's a shock coz WE ARE STILL UNBEATEN!!!

Suarez' fixtures post January are mouthwatering also, providing he can stay away from lengthy bans and/or suspensions and injury.

It's Gold, Frankincense and Berb that might have to depart............blasphemic. How would that work unless he rises to 9.m by then and for some odd reason Rodamel will be sub 10m.

HOWEVER. Arsenal at home, and Spurs at home wont bother the Toffs, and you would expect plenty of goals.

City, Stoke and West Ham away surrounding those two home matches.......um.......well ......hmmmmmmmmmm.

City v Everton. Bogeys :(. No more Cahill and we proved last year that we have got over that hump, but they are still Everton and we haven't played 'the new' Everton yet.

Stoke away is not what it was 2 years ago.

          West Ham....well...bubble burst soon?

It will be time to go down to only one Everton yes, but some coverage will be necessary. It maybe Baines that goes for me at his price...he's part of my 5 week plan in fact.

He just doesn't ooze points. When you watch him play he gets in the places you want him to get but doesnt do much after that. When Fellaini is in the same positions, you feel impending returns.

Pienaar is a quality player. He is like a cheaper Silva when he's on form. I loved owning him from the start...really paid off. But unfortunately Fellaini looks more effective in FPL for goals. I don't think people are writing Pienaar off..just being realistic...Fellaini is the bees knees.

What about shots inside the box? (they tend to equate to goals rather than pot shots from range). Consider the last 4-6 weeks as well and not just last week.

He also took a corner that nearly resulted in a goal. I have both Pienaar and Fellaini, just for the next two weeks whereafter Pienaar will be replaced by someone like Silva (Ill make the money!!).

Fellaini looks unplayable right now. But to everyone with Michu/Barfa and Pienaar, I think Michu/Barfa should go for Fellaini, rather than Pienaar!

      Very good defence.
Guthrie/Maloney-one of these needs to be Sterling; the other needs an upgrade.
Wal/Caz-far too much ARS. Pick one. Question marks against both presently.

Think you need to identify the players you actually want first. There are several ways to go.

Thats different to a ban though. With injuries, you never know how long the player will be out for. Its the uncertainty, rather than the missed match, that causes panic and makes people sell.

I highly doubt people will sell when he has an "enforced rest"

I dunno. Tough. Save transfer, start Nasri as he should be over his flu by the weekend and could be a massive differential at 8.1m mate. Midfield does need a bit of work though, but u do have quality in there. Hold on to Pienaar another week, hold on to Caz another week. Your def and att look fine and standard.

Done a five week plan to lead right up to GW16, to incorporate fixtures, hopefully form, and heading into the new year. It involves a weakened defence by most peoples standards (but let's be honest, there's just no need this year and probably going forward), and a lot of luck and fortune for it to unfold, and for prices to be kind and in some cases level off.

    Here's the plan.

GW 12 Vorm to McCarthy (both dropping, vorm already lost .2m, but mccarthy at 4.0m is too good to resist)

    GW 13 Pienaar to Fellaini

Gw 14 Baines to Nelson (home to villa, will start him)

    Gw 15 HBA to Walcott

Gw16 Maloney to Michu (ahead of Swanseas turn in favourable fixtures....slowly).

I would have to drop 20pts at once or nothing to have this by gw 16.

    Begovic
    Rafael Nelson Saylor Cameron Demel
    Walcott Fellaini Silva Michu Noble
    RVP SUarez B....e...r...b...a...t....o....v

      RVP Suarez Ba

RVP's injury is just a means of him dodging national duties, I'd expect him to start this week against Norwich ... although wouldn't be surprised to see him get dragged after 60. Rooney's is a little more concering as I think it's a genuine injury, although if it was serious it would be all over Google.

    Begovic | Foster
    Demel | Baines | Santon | Shawcross | Cuellar
    Fellaini | Morrison | Bale | Sterling | Mata
    RVP | Ba | Tevez

I've been tempted by Tevez > Berbatov and Bale > Silva but am worried about Fulham's fixtures and Bale is about to have a good run. I reckon I just won't make a transfer, which will be weird to do!

Who said Bale is about to have a good run? If you base Bales potential returns on playing shite at White Hart Lane then you are in for some eggy face. Maybe now I have sold him again (the mug!!!!!) he'll explode for you, but I wouldn't bank on it just yet.

      H.R.M is fixture proof mate.

I did Tev to SUarez (already have Berb) and Caz to Silva. Just my three cents.

Fair enough ... I'm basing my Bale "explosion" purely on the fact he's due and has a couple of easy away fixtures and Arsenal away - which will suit him! I've been patient with these situations all year and it has paid off, although I'm getting real itchy about Bale.

Out of interest ... who is HRM?

Means nothing. He's been struggling with an injury. He is still Ba. I hate when people pretend players are somehow dead to them if things like injuries happen to halt their form. I owned Ba and captained him twice on his nice run. I'm pretty happy to give him time. If you bought him for 8m+ I suppose it's reasonable to sell but not for me.

They're playing about as well as you'd expect them to in my opinion. They over-achieved at the start of last season and towards the end thanks to having two of the most on form strikers in the league at two different stages.

I think they're a solid team and it's obvious they'd be struggling without Ba. Liverpool are also playing below par at times for what you'd expect from them and are also being carried by a striker...but he's less clinical than Ba.

Suarez vs Ba is an interesting debate. One could argue that Suarez gets more chances so may still end up getting roughly the same amount of shots on target per game as Ba.

Statistically, he may indeed get more 'chances' or shots at least. But when you look at the games it's clear why Suarez gets more 'chances'. He is always running with the ball and shooting at sometimes absurd angles. Suarez historically has always had an outrageous amount of shots and in the Dutch League he was quite prolific. But that's to be taken with a pinch of salt as the Dutch league is a piece of p*ss compared to the Prem.

Ba is not getting the best service at times and because he's not a dribbler like Suarez has less time on the ball etc. Suarez has a particular style that sees him have an extraordinary amount of shots a game. But he often tries to do spectacular things rather than keep it simple.

They're worlds apart in terms of their strengths and styles. I just don't see a lot in it and so I'd prefer to go with the value of Ba. Not to mention Ba tends to be capable of being more explosive because of how clinical he is. Scoring 5 goals in 3 games earlier on is a testament to that.

I just don't like how everyone's overhyping him as if he's the saviour of FPL. 10m is a lot to spend on a striker in a mid-table team struggling for goals. He might have scored close to 80% of them but so has Ba for Newcastle who are about Liverpool's level if not better. I'll maintain he's an overly expensive Ba until I see more proof that he's worth the money over him. And the potential suspension makes me think it's a risky switch from the likes of Tevez/Ba

Wow, that is a tough one. I would also struggle to say there's an obvious transfer. It's weird thinking about going a week when you have 2FT and saving it. I don't think I've done that before. It feels like a waste...but sometimes it's not really necessary.

Your defence is essentially my WC defence, so kudos on that...

Bale could be Mata, but again that's not essential since either one could return big hauls this weekend... however, Cazorla is proving to be quite frustrating, I'd look to swap him out...

Tevez could also be swapped out for Suarez, but that is personal preference...

Depending on how happy you are with Maloney, you could sneak in Sterling this week for free, and then save 2FTs for next week... you certainly have a lot of options open to you...

A question regarding your defence, how do you plan to proceed with it? Personally I will be taking Cuellar out after GW16, and bringing in Wisdom (if he's playing)... the rest will play together quite nicely until the Jan WC..

        Cheers!

Don't have any plans for the defence. But given the chance I would like to put a little more resilience in it. For example in the form of a MUN, NEW or WBA defender. But right now I feel I'm using money well elsewhere.

I'm not convinced on Suarez over Tevez. The former has played more minutes, had a lot more attempts at goal, is more expensive, however still trail in points accrued. If I do something with Tevez, it's downgrading to someone like Giroud or Ba (one being unproven, the other injury prone).

If it weren't for Cazorla's strong fixtures, I would have already gone ahead with the Mata transfer. Might still do that though (have a couple of days left before the price changes makes the impossible).

To be honest, I think Maloney provides a more solid alternative than Sterling. But I am tempted by his fixtures.

I'd stick with Maloney for now. Sterling is over-hyped because of his cheapness. And if you didn't buy him when he was sub-5m then he's hardly worth breaking the bank to get in. And Maloney looks a really solid 5th mid. The fixtures shouldn't seen as gospel. And he's practically the same as Maloney...playing in a front 3. And Wigan have form. I fancy them to get something out of that Liverpool game.

Subscribe to quite a few of these arguments myself. Sterling's stats are slightly better than Maloney's, but the latter has penalties, which I think will push him past the teenager in the long run.

    My WC team

    Ruddy/Federici

    Cuellar/Baines/Clark/Gorkss/Stam

    Silva/Fellaini/Cabaye/Michu/Bale

    Hernandez/Berba/Suarez

Since Hernandez is a punt I need a strong midfield. I am keeping Michu as a placeholder. Once Walcott's injury clears up in 1-2 days I will get him in.

4.5 in bank. My only alterations (barring injury/RC) will be to get RvP and Mata in at some point for Hernandez/Bale.
