From The Physio

From the Physio – Gameweek 12

As a string of leading Fantasy assets line up with sick-notes for their International Managers, we cast an observational eye from the physio over Wayne Rooney’s ankle and Theo Walcott’s hip…

Wayne Rooney

First in line and nursing what Alex Ferguson described as an “ankle knock”, comes Wayne Rooney. If we observe Rooney’s movements throughout the second half in the dramatic 3-2 win at Villa Park we witness the versatile forward moving with ease and agility, twisting and turning with pace. These are movements of high intensity that test the full integrity of the ankle joint; they would certainly isolate any injury if present.

The only incident of note involving Rooney occurred in the 76th minute as the United frontman nudges the ball past an Aston Villa defender and, in an attempt to twist and sprint away, gets caught with a late tackle around the front of the mid-shin area. A tackle more akin to a forceful “ankle-tap” where the players own forward momentum, rather than the force of the impact, causes the fall. The tackle and the fall looked innocuous and of a type not readily associated with ankle damage. Rooney did, however, look totally fatigued at this point.

Rooney continued playing for a further five minutes in which time he demonstrated the same movement fluidity shown consistently throughout the half, performing several high intensity manoeuvres without impediment or reaction. Movements around the ankle joints were performed fully and without constraint, indeed, when substituted, Rooney jogged at a mid-pace to the side of the pitch, where he spoke to Sir Alex and, in fairness, appeared to look just a little anxious.

All things considered, I would suggest that Rooney sustained only mild soft tissue damage of a severity that, with treatment, should resolve within a week. This would give him every chance of being fit and firing as United take on Norwich at Carrow Road.

Theo Walcott

We can also be positive with our assessment of Theo Walcott’s hip. Following the clash with Fulham Arsene Wenger offered this initial appraisal:

“Walcott has a Glute muscle problem. We nearly took him off at half-time, he nearly went down, but we left him on. In the end, it got worse. At the moment, he is limping so I do not know whether he will be able to join the national team or not.”

This statement suggests that the Arsenal medics were aware of any problems and deemed them minor enough for Walcott to resume playing with a low risk of further deterioration. This would indicate that the injury wasn’t a major concern and could dissipate with further activity.

An observation of his subsequent physiological movements adds credibility to the half-time judgment. Walcott can be observed moving with the freedom, fluidity and versatility, performing a range of high intensity movements that would offer no cause for concern from the perspective of a physiotherapist.

Walcott did, however, appear to be involved in a collision that the camera didn’t catch. In the aftermath of the incident the camera cuts to him looking forlorn, leaning forward with hands on knees, not touching anywhere specifically, actions that would not indicate significant injury. Indeed, immediately after this incident Walcott can be seen sprinting and turning with the ball to cross high into the penalty-box, movements at the hip joint that would cause a reaction if any problem lingered.

Substituted in the 84th minute the England International can be seen jogging to the side of the pitch, he then slows to a walk, with just the faintest hint of a limp.

In summary, barring no underlying problems, it would be fair to suggest that Walcott is nursing a soft tissue injury of minor severity, that, with treatment, should be resolved within seven days. Chances are high that the Arsenal winger will have his hat to throw in in the ring as Arsenal go toe-to-toe with local rivals Spurs at the Emirates this weekend.

    1) Terrible mistake by Cahill, bounced off his legs right in front of Ibra.

    2) Poor keeping from Hart, should have saved the FK, accurate shot though.

    3) Shawcross decided not to mark Zlatan, and trotted at a slow pace behind him (great technique though, his most skilful goal tonight)

    4) Atrocious by Hart, great precision and technique with his back to goal.

These all came from sloppy errors, and although they were taken well, are we getting carried away? I remember seeing him muscled off the ball a few times...

I think so to, but Zaha is 20, and his current reputation pales in comparison with Zlatan's, not to mention experience. If Zaha could pull that off at his age it would have been something. It was a great 4 goals no doubt, but people asking whether him, Messi, Ronaldo or Falcao is better is ridiculous.

Id be very interested in an article on Baines sometime. I know, I know he is popular around here. The stats look great, we all love the wee fella. I even own him too 😉

But, it never hurts to ask the question is he returning at a rate we would expect. Simple truth is, Everton defense has declined rather then stayed consistent or improved, which presents us at least with a question about Baines at his current value.

Baines has always generated very useful numbers of KP and some threat from set pieces. Everton have started the season well for once and are scoring goals. No brainer. Right?

I'm not quite there in getting shut of him, but some analysis with a touch of paranoia would be interesting.

When all is said and done, we're dealing with a quite expensive defender who has had one exceptional season which led to a big price inflation and allot of broken hearts last season.

I know the knee jerk reaction is to say "nah bro, look at the points to date, stats and bonus points". It's true, but some constructive input would be nice 🙂

In my opinion, at this present moment he is a good source of points, but somewhat of a luxury for those who have some additional team value. For the unfortunate behind the pack so to speak, he may not best represent our interests anymore and perhaps, just maybe, the old rotation of cheap defenders ranging from 4.0-5.0 may serve our purposes better...if you spend the additional revenue wisely. (Ain't that the trick..)

With trends somewhat set this season that we can believe in, value in the likes of Stoke, West Brom, West Ham, Sunderland, Fulham and Newcastle (well potential in this last one) looks pretty good for the budget buyers.

It's an old strategy, but it works.

Might come across a touch negative on Baines here, to clarify I think he is a good source of points if you have the team value to support him, but I question his tag as near essential.

I wouldn't buy Baines now at 7.6 but at 7.0 it looked good value. Considering Kompany was 7.5 and doesn't offer as many assists/goals.

My take on it is that a defender basically scores you 6 points on a good day. Baines has got bonus points when not even keeping CS. Like the last game he just randomly gets 2 BPs for having a strong game. These little things along with his penalty duties and set piece duties add up to more points on average for a defender. It's frustrating when he gets 1's or 2's but so do other defenders...and at least you can hope if he's conceded he has lots of ways of still getting you points...unlike the vast majority of defenders.

As an option, yes if you for the team value to support it.

I just wonder about his growing cult status tbh, i'm not sure he is essential. Good source of pure points no question, just a question of value for your buck, where imo he is close to a touch overvalued now.

I would have thought the old BAP system liked him as well, often Everton's best performed. Now goals matter allot, which probably evens it out at least imo.

From looking at previous seasons, you'd have to say the exceptional season was the deviation tbh.

Everton have started well and I think he is viable again, just question the tag he gets as near essential now.

With regards to Baines in the first section.

Is he worth it? YES. Why?

      2012/13 Baines: 990 mins played, 2 goals, 3 assists, 2 CS, 13 bonus, 56 points.

      2011/12 Baines: 2970 mins, 4 goals, 2 assists, 9 CS, 18 bonus, 134 points.

Think we could see the return of 2010/11 Baines this year: 3420 mins, 5 goals, 11 assists, 9 CS, 20 bonus, 178 points.

Maybe even nearer the 200 mark IMO.

I agree that this Everton team look really good offensively, as much as it pains me to say as a Liverpool fan. If they manage to keep the 1st 11 fit, top 4 is achievable. I doubt it though due to squad depth.

          Defensively, they aren't great.

Baines has access to allot of points, but he always has and tbh, scored well enough. But after one exceptional season, the price inflated too much. This season it became more reasonable and he became viable again.

I just question his near essential tag, his goal threat seems a little inflated on here and his clean sheet potential has decreased recently. With his upturn in value, I think he is approaching the point of becoming a touch overvalued. Nice to have, but maybe not essential unless you really believe Everton will tighten up. Nothing in the stats really backs up them tightening up or from what I have watched.

Haven't they just made a profit forvthe first time under ambrovich. Maybe they can do it now. It's just paper talk obviously but I think clubs will find a way to get who they want regardless.

they made a profit due to insane champions league revenue that is unlikely to be repeated unless they win again. their base revenue hasn't increased, and if they spend £50m + increase wages by ~£10m a year by getting Falcao its completely at a tangent to the direction they're looking to go in

Zlatans goal was brilliant and even looked cooler, but there is much less pressure in an international friendly vs an average england defense. Than in one of the biggest derbies in england vs a much better defense. The fact that he even went for that makes it better. Just my opinion.

A few weeks ago in the international games, Mata was subbed off. We were all joking saying he was injured and stuff. Saying stuff like "I saw Mata's head fall of when he went down the tunnel" just to exaggerate it. Then it turned out he was injured and missed the weekend match after so many of us, including myself brought him in 😕

Assuming that no one (not many) of you has this exact team, what would you do with it?

    Begovic (Tremmel)
    Baines Rafa McCartney (Cameron Gorkss)
    Bale Mata Michu Santi (Sterling)
    Berba RVP(c) Tevez(vc)

Bit of a quandary as to who to bench out of Sterling, Santi and Michu.

    Any thoughts?
