Watchlist

The Watchlist – Antonio Valencia

Few men would envy the task of filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden slippers. When the Portuguese prima donna eloped from Manchester to Madrid in the summer of 2009, a club accustomed to stepping out with the Premier League’s prom queen could be forgiven for not immediately embracing the wholesome qualities of his replacement..

Doggedly supplying that deficit of glamour with industry and unselfishness since his arrival, Antonio Valencia has forged virtue of necessity and wrought himself a hard-won place in the hearts of the fans. If the Stretford End still secretly dreams of step-overs past, it wakes gladly divorced from the illusion that the value of a final ball depends on any preceding pirouettes.

Investment in the United midfield has been pregnant with rotational pitfalls since Ronaldo’s departure, but with Nani out of favour and new acquisition Shinji Kagawa deployed centrally or wide left, Valencia is currently relieved of credible understudies for his blooming duet with Rafael on the right. With four assists to his credit already in an injury-interrupted start and only a baffling, if hilarious, miskick robbing him of a tap-in against Arsenal two weeks ago, a big haul may be just around the corner for the former Wigan man as the goals flow and fixtures ease for the Reds.

Averaging a gnat’s whisker under three strikes a game since their opening day defeat at Everton, a run comprising (nor, QPR, WHM, rdg) in the next four Gameweeks seems likely to further augment that impressive average. Still smarting from last season’s goal-difference title defeat at the hands of their noisy neighbours, Ferguson has publicly set the pass mark at 100 notches on the goal post this time out and, with four goals and 14 assists last year, Valencia certainly has the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pedigree to profit from a more ruthless offensive philosophy.

With the likes of Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Santi Cazorla somewhat treading water at the pricy end of the midfield spectrum, Fantasy managers may feel more at liberty to chance their arm on less celebrated candidates. Whilst out-and-out wingers have taken something of a back seat to “in the hole” midfield picks thus far, few wide men have access to the quality of the targets Valencia enjoys. Currently priced at 8.6 in FPL (7.9 in the Sky Sports game), the Ecuadorian dynamo looks primed to buck the trend and deliver strong value from out wide as United look to go forth and conquer over the coming weeks.

I am not sure why these questions keep popping up. In the space of 3 weeks, the preferred Berbatov/Ba/RVP pairing can be a completely different trio due to injuries/suspensions/team performance/form/fixtures etc etc....

😀 That's reminded me of some of the class #AskGerrard Tweets

If Ryan Giggs’ wife divorced him and took half of everything he owned. How would it feel knowing she has 6 more Premier League medals than you?

On a scale of Julian Clary to Gok Wan, how camp is Raheem Sterling when he runs?

And my favourite: Who would win in a foot race, Jamie Carragher or the erosion of the UK coastline?

OK, looked at Arsenal v Spurs fixture history for the last 6 seasons (since 2006/2007). Considered both home (Arsenal v Spurs) and away (Spurs v Arsenal) fixtures.

Average goals per game in Prem last year was 2.80.

    HOME
    Average goals: 4.83
    Average Arsenal goals: 3.17
    Average Spurs goals: 1.67

    AWAY
    Average goals: 3.33
    Average Arsenal goals: 1.67
    Average Spurs goals: 1.67

    HOME AND AWAY
    Average goals: 4.08
    Average Arsenal goals: 2.42
    Average Spurs goals: 1.67

Looks like a bladdy goalfest, I'm gambling on Arsenal coverage.

Yep. Your captain should get 2/12 of your score or 16.6% if everything was averaged out. With a choice of captain every week you should be aiming for around 25%. Anything less and your leaving points behind.

I think just take Crouch out. Hazard is the creme de la midfield. He can pretty much return points in any fixtures so I wouldn't be put off by his tough fixtures ahead.

I say Barfa's dribble was better than both of Neymar's and Messi's, he beat more players and did it with less raw pace and more trickery, hence I voted for him. Wacky shots are always good to watch.

LOL I stand corrected, when he was sold on by City I made the assumption that he was in the twilight of his career when actually they just don't want his kind anymore...

Oh of course, no argument there. I think he's got such a sweet deal at Santos he won't be over for a bit yet. Think he said after the World Cup he would. I'll be honest though, I don't expect him to be. Very flash but can be incredibly inconsistent and weak at times. Nigel de Jong would have a bit of fun with him I think 😀 There are a few other young guys I reckon will be better than him as far as living up to the next Messi hype.

Ha not sure of them. Oscar is looking like a very good shout, Thorgan Hazard (Eden's little brother) could come good. James Rodriguez is another one that is very very talented. Bojan as well. I agree with you, Neymar has yet to prove his hype. He's grand in Brazil but has yet to show anything European wise. My other theory is that, if he really was so incredibly gifted why have Barcelona not offered the sun, moon and stars for him?

For a while he was looking like a real contender but Stoke just score so very few goals. Even if he scores all of them, that's still not many. 0-0 is their target scoreline for every game.

Ok which of these terrible bench fillers would you play in defence this week? Just one needed.

    Clyne - away to QPR
    Shorey - home to Everton
    cueller - away to Fulham

at this stage I just need one that'll get me a positive score. Clyne looks the likliest lad at the mo I think.

Actually even if Reading concede four goals, Shorey's assist potential should carry him over the 0pt line. Considering none are likely to get cleanies, I have to go for the attacking threat I think and stick to my shorey loving guns.

I really have no idea what defenders to pick this week:

Rafael (nor) Baines (rdg) Riise (SUN) Demel (STK) Gorkss (EVE)

There's an argument to play all of them to be fair. I feel like I should play both Demel and Riise but then who would I bench between Rafael and Baines? And I bet Gorkss ends up scoring! 🙁

Saw your post on the last page Martinunreal (Gork$$unreal). I'm a 3-year member but not a "regular" per say... my posting fluctuates as a function of the amount of work I have (quite a lot this year) and the amount of alcohol in me (alas, not as much as much time for that either lately). Hello! Good luck to you too, my friend. I haven't had a look at your 'differentials' yet but I'm already a bit worried seeing you have Michu 😀

Nolan did me big favours last round as my opponent benched him and I reaped the rewards. Trust he'll get a red card this week to wipe that grin off my face!

I had a customs agent at Heathrow make a crack about it once when he saw the name on my passport. He was surprised an American knew what he was talking about. Smuggled my wares right on through...

I sold Nolan last week for Fellaini, so I'm doubly motivated to root against him to vindicate the tinkering
