Moneyball – Esteban Granero

This is very likely the first and last time a former Real Madrid player graces the pages of the Moneyball series. Esteban Granero made an astonishing 31 appearances in the league in 2009-10 for Los Blancos, more than Guti, Rafael van der Vaart, Kaka and even Cristiano Ronaldo. The arrivals of Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil pushed Granero out of favour in future years, though he still managed to finish his time in Madrid with almost 100 appearances in three seasons before making his way to Loftus Road this season.

Despite that pedigree, his arrival in England barely registered on the transfer radar and he’s hardly captured the collective eye of Fantasy managers – Granero has just a 0.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, which has risen by just 10,000 or so transfers all year. Given that this is a Moneyball piece, though, we’re not going to settle on a player based on his CV: it’s when we delve into his statistics so far this term that Granero really catches the eye.

      Sounds logical enough but they seem like genuine title contenders this year so will continue to put points on the board irrespective of opposition. Mata is pulling the strings at the moment and should continue to pick up points, look at his return against Man U for example.

              Ahh I see. Just hold on to Tevez imo. Really don't see any difference between Suarez now and last season. He's always in good form, scoring or not he plays well - really don't think he's a good enough finisher to be a better option than Tevez long term.

    Please put me out my misery I have exact money to do Ba>Suarez. So if Suarez explodes this week and Ba draws a blank he is no longer an option. Pull the trigger? or hold faith with Ba?

          Not 100% that he'll start but I'd be amazed if he doesn't - particularly with Cisse being a doubt. Genuinely considering captaining him here - if Cisse doesn't start and we go to 4-3-3 it could suit him very nicely.

            mmmm ok thanks for your view, just wish you was a neutral. Suarez does seem a better long term option in my eyes, but if the above does happen Ba could easily outscore him short term.

    I missed the discussion on the toon formation on the last page. Anyone have any theories as to why pardiola is persisting with 4-4-2 with Barfa on the wing, rather than the 4-3-3 that served us so well last year. I really don't get it. I presume that Pardiola wants to keep Ba happy by not playing him on the left side, but I would play whichever of the demba's is in form through the middle (obviously ba at the moment), and probably either ferguson or sameobi on the left.

      It is a very bizarre thing to see. 4-3-3 worked so well last season that he decided to abandon it and change to 4-4-2? And stick to it whether it works or not?

        Yeah. Saw that. But why keep Cisse happy when he has been absolutely rubbish!! Don't get me wrong, i back him 100% to get his form back, but surely he should be doing that in europe, and off the bench, rather than stinking out the team? Although saying that, he hasn't been that bad, we just haven't created any chances for him. But again, I think that is down to the formation.

          Yeah, I agree with all of the above. Problem is, Ba is more likely to leave in January but is in far better form. A forward who can play wide in January to replace Ba if he leaves probably solves the problem nicely, much as I'd hate to see Ba leave. Loic Remy has been touted.

          If Cisse is out tomorrow, perhaps it'll be a blessing in disguise. A positive result and good performance is needed tomorrow to kickstart our season.

      It seems very odd to change a winning system for Ba's ego/agent. Ba on the whole was playing well on the wing too - if not delivering FPL returns (not a key aim of Pard's I'm sure). At the moment I'd bench Cisse with Ba through the middle but when Cisse gets going Ba should play on the wing and like it.

    ok back to earth. Too many far more pressing issues to think about getting Granero. Was gonna get Lukaku for WBA's run in a few weeks, but Arsenal's fixtures make Giroud hard to ignore. On that basis I'm keeping Morrison. I'd rather have McAnuff or a Sunderland mid over Granero

    Should I do
    A) Cazorla & Tevez -> Silva & Suarez (4pt)
    OR
    B) Cazorla & Crouch -> Silva & Berba (4pt)
    OR
    C) Cazorla + Crouch -> Fellaini & Ba

    This one's really doing my head in so feedback appreciated 🙂
