Moneyball – Esteban Granero

This is very likely the first and last time a former Real Madrid player graces the pages of the Moneyball series. Esteban Granero made an astonishing 31 appearances in the league in 2009-10 for Los Blancos, more than Guti, Rafael van der Vaart, Kaka and even Cristiano Ronaldo. The arrivals of Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil pushed Granero out of favour in future years, though he still managed to finish his time in Madrid with almost 100 appearances in three seasons before making his way to Loftus Road this season.

Despite that pedigree, his arrival in England barely registered on the transfer radar and he’s hardly captured the collective eye of Fantasy managers – Granero has just a 0.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, which has risen by just 10,000 or so transfers all year. Given that this is a Moneyball piece, though, we’re not going to settle on a player based on his CV: it’s when we delve into his statistics so far this term that Granero really catches the eye.

        I've worked it out that Cazorla's sale rate would currently see him not fall. But as it's Friday night the sale rate will increase so it's touch and go. I am hoping he just avoids it.

      You're team certainly does need fixing...I'd trade Rangel and Rooney for Suarez or Berbatov and any defender your heart desires (I'd look at Sagna because I seriously doubt his 'fatigue' will stop him playing, his fixtures look tasty and he is a genuine chance to get points from attacking endeavours).

    Man Utd fans, what are the chances of RVP being "Berbatov'd"?

    They both are prolific scorers. Both signed from North London clubs, partly to prevent Man City buying them. Both caused a change in system. Both stunted and are stunting the development of the ridiculously talented Hernandez and the much less talented Welbeck.

      Welbeck isn't much less talented than Hernandez.

      And I'd say that training and (sometimes) playing alongside someone with RVP's talent can only help their development.

        I like Welbeck, I just think Hernandez is on another level. He's the best poacher I've seen in a long time, since Romario probably.

      I think RVP's movement and ideas improve Utd's attack a lot more than Berbatov's pure technical ability did. RVP's movement constantly changes the shape of the attack. Berbatov doesn't have that IMO - he slinks around and waits to exploit a gap - rather than generating gaps and spaces with his runs.

      Just a surface observation not entirely thought out...

        As Stilicho pointed out earlier, apart from his arguably flukey goal against United, he hasn't scored against any team above the relegation zone this season.

        He is on a very, very final warning for me. In fact, I'm not sure what he can do to keep his place next week.

                  I am becoming more and more convinced that the way to deal with this is to overhaul the bonus points system so that it rewards things other than goals and assists (which are already rewarded). At a stroke it would massively widen the pool of players worth owning and increase team diversity.
