The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Saturday – Part Two

Anthony Pilkington earns the points for Norwich with a superb headed effort extending his side’s unbeaten run to five. Robin Van Persie fails to score or assist for the first time as a starter for United, with the Canaries resilient defence proving too good for the most prolific attack in the Premier League:

Going Up

Norwich Defence
The Canaries came into this evening’s game having conceded a single goal in their previous four Gameweeks but the visit of United was considered a real test of their resolve. A 1-0 win continued their upturn in resilience as Chris Hughton’s influence starts to have a real effect – they now have five clean sheets this term, three more than this evening’s beaten opponents.

Anthony Pilkington
His first goal of the campaign was enough to produce the points for the hosts. Norwich have not tasted defeat since a 4-1 battering at Chelsea in Gameweek 7 and while they may not score many – netting more than once on a single occasion so far – Hughton’s side concede even less; the opposite of last season’s form under former boss Paul Lambert.

Going Down

United Defence
David De Gea was given the day off after a trip to the dentist caused problems but Anders Lindegaard could do little about Pilkington’s excellent headed winner. United have now conceded first in eight of their 12 matches and for once, their attack was unable to bail them out.

United Attack
Tonsillitis kept Wayne Rooney out of the reckoning and with Javier Hernandez selected to start, Robin Van Persie dropped a little deeper. Having racked up 29 goals in the previous 10, with at least two goals per game over that run, the visitors were snuffed out for the first time since Gameweek 1. Three favourable fixtures in the next four look set to offer Van Persie a chance to rectify tonight’s blip – this was the first time he has failed to produce a goal or assist when starting a league game for United.

I was so happy at the start of today with Cazorla scoring. And felt justified not knee-jerking etc. Then RDM benches Mata and Sterling is on my bench. And Silva goes and scores the highest FPL score he is capable of ever. I mean it really takes the biscuit sometimes. Now I've no effin idea what to do with my team. And Silva will go up and up and I'm going to have to make a decision so quick. It's horrendous.

I'm actually so angry that Di Matteo didn't start Mata. I could take a Mata 2 pointer any day. I'm not going to complain. That's life. But for Di Matteo to rest him is actually making me furious! I can't stand that pr*ck. Who do you think you are? Mancini??

Oh and thank you all for the help on the last page. I probably will just accept Ruddy will get higher and higher and I'll have to bear it. I am in such a knee jerk mood. And I cannot believe Silva is going to rise so much and I could miss out if I don't swap out Caz or Mata 🙁

i'd be tempted to swap out mata... i feel like chelsea are hitting a bit of a rough patch and might falter

plus MCI, FUL, whu, sun isn't a very easy set of attacking fixtures

Yeah but neither are City's immediate fixtures all that great. I mean I don't see them hammering anyone like Villa.

I am considering that. But it just makes me furious that Mata is such a good player and he's rested away to WBA!

I'd like Silva but is he going to post a score like that every week? Probably not. Might be an extreme knee jerk.

          ARRRRGH I hate this game

yeah i guess you're right. silva will most likely get 1 goal or 1 assist each week in general with some blanks and some weeks with a bit more than the usual. this week wasn't typical for him. which is unfortunate because now everyone will be kneejerking him in!

on the plus side with the next couple gw's space so close together its unlikely he'll rise as much by the time you might bring him in in a week or two

Garrido seems to be rising fast. Maybe it's best to just make money swapping out defenders repeatedly. That way you don't have to stick to your guns like with Ruddy?

So it seems the popular moves are along the lines of Cazorla -> Silva ahead of City's Chelsea game. Sounds pretty stupid to me. I know, form over fixtures, but I would much rather have a magician facing a team that just let in 5 goals.

    I'm very much contemplating a move of Baines + Cameron -> Caulker + Enrique/wisdom. This would leave me a back-5 of: Caulker - Enrique/wisdom - Gibbs - Evans - McAuley.

To me this looks amazing, bound to get points, but it is an issue that 4 of them were injured this gameweek. Thoughts?

I have three cheap midfielders - Sterling, Michu and Maloney. If the defenses fixtures are too good I'll just bench an extra midfielder and go 4-3-3. It hasn't worked out so far because all the big teams struggle defensively, but I think it will come good in the future.

I'm going to keep McAuley, he has better fixtures than Cameron and you already have Begovic. Ruiz could still perform. Kightly is risky as he tends to be subbed and didn't even start last week, so Kightly -> Sterling looks the obvious route.

Still Cazorla. I'm guessing a lot of people will buy Walcott now but to be honest I think he played balls. Awful crossing and corners and often missing the obvious line breaking pass to Giroud to instead go running toward the corner flag. Cazorla was easily man of the match for me yesterday.

Both Giroud and Walcott are decent options anyway, but they are more at risk to rotation and injury and Cazorla has nailed down that CAM we all love so much. He's staying for a while in my team.

True that one of his crosses made a goal, but that was a pretty damn good header as well. I thought he looked fresh at the beginning, but got annoyed with him quite fast as I felt like he hindered a lot of attacks.

I'v gone for Giroud. he's 8.4m, can score a goal or two. I think 8.4 is a good amount of cash to have in the arse. However he's taking up a FW spot and i'm not fully sure about that. Anyone?

This is why I think Walcott is the best option, he's cheaper than Caz and isn't taking up a fwd spot. I think that all three of them are as nailed on as can be at the moment. If Walcott continues playing well (I thought he did play well, he's never going to be a playmaker, but he's very good at running to the line, and putting up or pulling back balls for Giroud to poke in) then Gervinho isn't going to get a look in and Ox will have to settle for rotating with Podolski.

Caz is brilliant, but I don't think he'll get as many goals or assists as Walcott and he's that much more expensive.

Sterling is a horrible player to own. You always bench him...and he always scores points. I hate this! Why can't we just have Shane Ferguson?

Why do you have to bench him? Price doesn't matter once you select your points, just pick the players who will score the most points, so if he has a good fixture he should be prioritized over someone who doesn't.

Easier for me though since I am rotating him with Maloney. Worked out good so far 🙂

    Jussi , bego

    Rafa , hange , ridge , clyne , McCartney

Mata , michu , santi , fellaini maloney

    Ba RVP jelavic

iv only got 0.7 in bank i think i should either do

    Hange > Cuellar + Jelavic > Tevez

    or

Hange > Barnett Jelavic > Suarez

Would really appreciate a couple of your opinions on this one!

So...what did I miss all day? Pretty emotional weekend it looks like. Quite the opposite - last weekend the FFS community did very well. This weekend, unfortunately, the 'other' players have come on top.

Remember - there are 26 GW's left. There is snow. There is double GWs. There are injuries, suspensions, captain choices...lots of (fantasy) football left.

    Keep your heads up.

I know what you mean, mate. However, 2/3 of the season is still left to play. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

In previous seasons, I always lost interest when I was too far behind my ML opponents, but this year I decided to stick it out for the whole season. I am convinced that if you maintain active, follow the stats, trends, etc - you will have a great overall finish.

It's pretty brutal this year at times though. I mean what do we do with all this money invested in RVP...and the array of expensive/mid-priced mids. Not to mention cheap defenders that won't stop scoring the most points. It's impossible to know what the hell is going on sometimes. And the lack of City coverage is making me mad. Especially when I'd have to sacrifice Mata/Cazorla for Silva.

But then is Silva even the way to go? Perhaps Tevez is the best value. But I like my strikers...It's so baffling what to do with my 2FT! And I feel like I'll regret not getting Silva! But Chelsea away is a terrible fixture.

Others (more knowledgable) may disagree with me, but I personally think City attacking coverage is essential. They will kick into gear soon (they may already have). I would prefer Kun over Tevez but Tevez have served me great since GW1.

I think I will save mt FT this week and then get Kun in for Tevez, once they are out of the UCL.

Kun will still get 20+ EPL goals.

I agree to an extent, but it's very easy to say this after a 5-0 drubbing. City scored 1 goal in 2 games previous to this. It's clearly all about Silva. But it's just shocking how much they miss him when he's out.

RVP's blank, Baines' undortunate absence from a PK opportunity and Mata's cameo sucked for my team, but if you had told me Santi, Bale, And Michu would score and Fellaini would get an assist, I would have considered it a great week. My season keepers cannot be expected to always deliver, but it just gets exaggerated when all three misfire the same week.

My takeaway is that there are about 15 great attackers, and as long as you have six or seven of them you will be fine most weeks. The real action will be defense, gk, and captain choice.

One of them weeks. It's behind - now focus on next week. Over the season, you are bound to have a few bad ones. A lot of this game is down to chance in any given GW, but over the course of the season, it evens out and the active / dedicated managers, win out.

I've been having couple of em really.

It was the GW after I transferred out Suarez that he starts scoring like crazy.
I also just transferred out Aguero 2 GWs ago and he's now on 3 goals + ? assist in the last 2 games.

Either I'm really jinxed or just so bad at transfer management. Haha

I was surprised, too. I thought the rule was you only get the assist if you get fouled.

But: In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

Yeah, I wasn't surprised about the FPL rules...but more that his assists were so bloody lucky. I mean he is such a creative player. To see his two assists were from handballs was strange!

I actually think he overperformed today because of it. As in, it's a bit of a false dawn. Silva had an amazing season last year but I don't think he ever had a score this big!

Then don't. I'm ignoring him in preference of the other 3 and hoping he goes away. If he doesn't, then it's an easy swap from one of the others. (probably Bale, as Tottenham are the only team that not having 'coverage' for scares me).
