The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Sunday

Brede Hangeland’s dismissal hands Sunderland the chance to register their first away win of the season. Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson both play a part in two of the Black Cats’ three goals, while Dimitar Berbatov draws a rare blank as Fulham lose for the first time with the Bulgarian in their starting XI:

On the Up

Steven Fletcher
Without a strike since Gameweek 5, the Scot returned to form with a goal and assist as Sunderland made full use of their extra-man advantage following Brede Hangeland’s first-half dismissal. With four home fixtures in the next four, including double Gameweek 16, Fletcher chose the perfect time to serve a reminder of his capabilities.

Adam Johnson
The winger added to last week’s goal at Everton by providing a pair of assists as the Black Cats scored more than a single goal for only the second time this season. Johnson had previously failed to produce any attacking returns prior to Gameweek 11 but is starting to suggest he may be finally settling at the Stadium of Light.

Carlos Cuellar
Providing he’s injury-free, the Spaniard seems nailed-on at the heart of the Sunderland defence and found the net for the first time since moving to Wearside. His cut-price valuation means Cuellar is another likely candidate for his side’s upcoming fixtures, bearing in mind O’Neill’s side have conceded just three goals in four home games so far.

Stephane Sessegnon
For many a month he’s flattered to deceive but the Benin international fired home a superb effort to score for the first time since March. If Sessegnon can return to the form that produced seven goals and 12 assists last term, he could be another differential to consider over the next few.

Going Down

Brede Hangeland
Dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Lee Cattermole, the Cottagers centre-half now faces a three-match ban. Hangeland’s absence should afford Philippe Senderos a chance alongside Aaron Hughes ahead of trips to Stoke and Chelsea and a home clash against Spurs.

James McClean
A nailed-on starter under Martin O’Neill last term, the winger was omitted from the starting line-up for today’s showdown. The return of Lee Cattermole saw Seb Larsson move to the right and Adam Johnson shift over to the left as McClean dropped out for the second time in three Gameweeks.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian was snapped up by over 230,000 FPL managers heading into today’s game after producing returns in five of his first six starts for the Cottagers. With injuries and dismissals disrupting the hosts’ rhythm, Berbatov returned a rare blank but was nevertheless full of creativity and attacking threat for Jol’s side.

Fulham Defence
There’s no denying Hangeland’s sending off played a part in today’s result but Jol’s defence continue to leak goals at an alarming rate. Fulham have now conceded three goals in all but one of their last four matches and have shipped 22 this term – only QPR and Southampton have conceded more.

** Just a heads-up to let you know that the Big Numbers article, which usually follows Sunday evening’s Stock Check, should now be published tomorrow. Mark has been laid low by a bug and is having a rare night off.

Let's talk Tevez - a potentially explosive scorer at a good team who could have a huge partnership with Aguero .... or a support striker doing all the dirty work for Aguero who hadn't scored in months before yesterday and one of them was a sympathy penalty?

Bit of both, producer during some games, explosive during others.

I'd also consider taking a look into Aguero's abysmal away stats from last year.

If I bring in Ba (sot, sto , WIG) and Walcott (avl, eve, SWA) I'll have super fixtures this week and slightly tricky ones the next. Quite how bad the second fixtures are will decide whether I go through with this. I think the Everton defence is very leaky now without both Gibson and Neville. Stoke at home not though. Third fixtures look great.

WBA QPR nor, first and third are far too defensively solid for my liking and while Sunderland kooked better today it was against 10 men and they were still out-created by Fulham. Not convinced.

Walcott tend to have his best performances in games where the opposition left back is attack minded, so I wouldn't worry in the slightest about playing him up against Baines.

Very much agreed, Walcott eats high lines for breakfast and especially defenders not staying tight to him (Naughton got merked completely). But Baines is a superb fullback because he gets the balance between attack and defence so right, ie. he manages not to expose his flank unduly.

        I suppose it's worth a try anyway.

So Everton have both their first choice DM injured (Gibson) and their second choice (Neville). Also the fixtures are toughening.

Surely there is a serious risk of Fellaini dropping back to DM when everyone else is injured there? Particularly when Naismith is scoring so he could fill in an attacking slot, Pienaar can't play DM so will have to take the other attacking slot, and Mirallas should be back to take the final one? Heck, Coleman, Osman or Oviedo could all play an attacking slot in theory too.

BTW take a look at Everton's injury list. It's horrific.

Don't worry, Gibson returned and played 60+ minutes for our under 21s today. Moyes also proved on Saturday that without Neville or Gibson, he's willing to play Hitzlsberger and Osman in midfield and leave Fellaini advanced. So you've only really got a problem if 3 or more of those 4 players are injured, and even then he could play Heitinga there or Barkley when he returns from Sheff Weds.

I see I'm not alone in considering these 2FT but I think I may well go for Cuellar and Garrido/Turner. The key debate is between the latter two. Should I go with the casuals new found love Garrido who will rise exponentially. Or should I go for Turner, the cheaper and more likely to score of the two.

I'd hope to maybe make a profit from Turner eventually but I'm wondering is it too risky to bring in the cheapo alternative if he isn't getting as much interest? I really want to make money on every defensive transfer and Garrido is garnering a lot of attention, so surely he's the one to make that money on.

Anyone have any objections to these transfers?

I'm getting in Cuellar to basically play for the next 5 games. And the Norwich defender for the insurance and price rises. I was going to go Ruddy but decided that was too big a commitment, even though he's a bargain I would have to keep him all season really for it to be worth it.

So Turner or Garrido? Garrido is set for a double rise. Turner is less in the spotlight. I think it has to be Garrido for now yes?

I'm still not impressed by Norwich. ManU just had a terrible game. Plus 2 home games in the next 6; you won't be using Garrido/Turner too much. I'd stick with Demel and WHU's tried and tested defense.

I think I can afford to go back to Demel or McCartney when the time comes. They won't keep enough CS for me to regret it in the next 5, I doubt. I don't think I'll even play my Norwich defender for a few games anyway. I just want to get em while they're cheap and popular.

It sounds shallow but ideally I'd love to buy Garrido for a .4m rise and then get Turner!

Really think there is no chance of improving vs the horrible QPR or ok WHM? This is could only be a 2 GW punt so not too worried if it fails. Anyone else at 8.7 max for 2 gameweeks? I have Walcott.

I guess the potential is there for them to do well, but I'd still rather other options around that price. Hazard, Mata, Cazorla, Walcott Bale etc..

I bought Valencia last week and am very annoyed about it.

I would pick Valencia over Young.

Tbh, i can see him get benched for some of the upcoming fixtures.

Interesting transfer choice to consider this week. Bring the guaranteed Walcott in or take a risk on a third United midfielder, in the form of Young, Valencia or even Cleverley. Love the look of Uniteds next two and Arsenal's fixtures are good. No exposure with Arsenal either....

3 or 2 United players Vs 0 or 1 Arsenal players.....great fixtures Vs good fixtures.....risky midfield punt Vs guaranteed minutes.....Which way???

Ha, great timing on our posts, Im looking at a mid too in that price range. I already own Walcott though, but Young could be my choice. Especially if Nani plays the CL game.

Young is the one I am looking at. 3 x 90 minutes in last 4 but performances have been ok at best and abject being honest especially at Villa (the whole Man U team was awful at Norwich). Real differential @ 1.3% ownership but he who dares....

    My "Plan".

    Mignolet;
    Baines, Rafael, Cameron;
    Mata, Bale, Michu, Maloney;
    RVP(c), Ba(vc), Berbatov.

    JussiJ; Clyne, Davies, Fellaini.

    1FT; £0.4m in the bank.

    GW13: Save Transfer.
    GW14: Baines, Michu/Fellaini & Ba ➡ B.Jones, Walcott, Tevez.

    Foster Bego
    Baines Rafael Gorkss Demel* Riise*
    Mata Cazorla Sterling Fellaini Nolan
    RVP Ba Berbatov

    2FT 0.1m in the bank

Riise has to go. Cuellar is the ideal replacement. I think that one's a no brainer, right?
Demel, while I could keep him. He'll still always be approx 4.0 along with McCartney. So I can get West Ham defensive coverage later on if needs be. That's why I'm thinking of Demel > Garrido or Turner (Norwich)

Turner leaves me with .3m more in the bank but a slower chance of a price rise.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts/advice you could give. I am sure I should focus my transfers on the defence this week to free up cash for future problems/plans.

    Thanks!!

    PLEASE HELP! 😀

Cheers, but I hate Demel. He's been on my team injured and I've never ever played him since my WC. I would love to just make some money on Garrido/Turner or best of all...have a long term valuable Norwich defender for cheap.

I'd like to know too as it's crucial to my plans. I heard it wasn't too serious but who knows with these things. I'm praying he's back for the weekend. Just so I can be sure he'll be there for the good fixtures coming up.
