Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Sunday

A red card for Brede Hangeland helps Sunderland raise their game ahead of a favourable run of fixtures. With a double Gameweek 16 and four home matches in the next four on the horizon, Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson, Stephane Sessegnon and Carlos Cuellar all produce the points as the Black Cats win on their travels for the first time this term…

Fletcher Back in Form
Having racked up 39 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his opening four games, Steven Fletcher’s eye for goal and mid-price valuation earned the summer signing plenty investment early on this term. Unsurprisingly, the former Wolves man was unable to maintain his superb scoring rate and after rising to 7.4 had dropped back to 7.0 prior to yesterday’s trip to the Cottage. Sunderland had arrived at Fulham with a mere seven goals to their name – the lowest in the league – though Fletcher’s worth was obvious, having found the net on five occasions. A goal and assist yesterday afternoon means the forward has played a part in seven of his side’s 10 goals and with the maximum FPL bonus points in the bag yet again, he has now produced 15 bonus points – second only to Carlos Tevez’s 16 so far. It’s something of an understatement to say that Martin O’Neill’s side have failed to impress going forward but with a strong run of home fixtures in the next four Gameweeks (WBA, QPR, nor, CHE & RDG) he’s the one man most likely to produce the points, going on his displays so far.

Johnson and Sessegnon Amongst the Points
It’s been an underwhelming start to his career on Wearside but Adam Johnson is starting to suggest he is finally beginning to settle. With James McClean dropped to the bench for the second time in three Gameweeks, the former City winger was shifted to the left, allowing Seb Larsson to shift from the middle out to the right flank against the Cottagers. Having broken his duck against Everton last weekend, Johnson was in the points again, providing a pair of assists and a couple of FPL bonus points for his owners. Two performances are not quite enough to judge his Fantasy potential but with the fixtures so obliging, many are likely to snap up the 6.8 priced midfielder.

With seven goals, 12 assists and 14 bonus points last term, Stephane Sessegnon had been priced at 8.0 this time round but prior to yesterday, he’d been a passenger in the Sunderland side, without a goal or assist in the opening 11 Gameweeks. A superb strike for the visitors’ third had his manager hoping the Benin international can grow in self-belief and start to replicate his form of the previous campaign:

“Confidence is a big thing, and when you see someone like Sessegnon score that type of goal, you hope it helps. He’s been searching for that confidence all season, as has the rest of the team. There were signs of it coming back last week at Everton. We created three great chances in the first half and should have been able to take more than the one we did. We created chances again today and shared the goals around.”

Cuellar on the Radar
With just three goals conceded in their first four home games, O’Neill’s side have been impressive at the back at the Stadium of Light, despite their lack of cutting edge. Ahead of their above-mentioned schedule, investment in Sunderland’s defensive assets looks a likely tactic by many and while fit-again Phil Bardsley could offer potential from right-back, Carlos Cuellar’s goal and 4.5 FPL price tag will surely see the Spaniard pick up plenty new suitors over the next few matches. Cuellar sat third in our Watchlist rankings before Sunday – he’s likely to maintain that rank for several weeks.

Fulham Defensive Woes Continue
The dismissal of Brede Hangeland, for a two-footed challenge on Lee Cattermole, undoubtedly changed the match. Martin Jol will now make do without the Norwegian for the next three Gameweeks as his side travel to Stoke and Chelsea before playing host to Spurs but while Hangeland’s absence will be a real blow, Fulham’s defensive woes have been apparent for some time now. Although their attacking brand of football has allowed Dimitar Berbatov to flourish up front, the Cottagers have now conceded 22 goals in their opening 12 fixtures, only one less than basement-dwellers QPR. On eight occasions they have conceded at least two goals and as the season progresses, their resilience at the back is further slackening – they have now shipped three goals in three of the last four.

Injuries Build up for Jol
With Kieran Richardson sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained against Arsenal last week, Alex Kacaniklic was afforded the chance on the left flank but the young Swede lasted less than half an hour before limping off to be replaced by Hugo Rodallega. Martin Jol then watched on as Bryan Ruiz was forced off on 58 minutes, to be replaced by Mladen Petric – although the latter finished the match, he left the field a couple of times for treatment after notching the Cottagers’ consolation. Post-match, Jol confirmed both Kacaniklic and Ruiz will be out for at least three weeks; his attacking options are severely dented as the schedule begins to pick up pace, with the next three Gameweeks kicking off on November 24, November 27 and December 1 respectively.

Playing with my wc, your toughts on this lot

    Bego, Tremel
    Rafael, Cuellar, Bardsley, Gorkks, Clyne
    Bale, Walcott, Fellaini, A.Johnson, Sterling
    Rvp, Suarez, Giroud

Or is Mata almost essential? Option could be Fellaini + AJ => Mata + Puncheon
Bardsley and AJ out gw17 anyway.

    thanks

Also considering AJ but leaving till next week as West Brom will be a tricky one for Sun this week. Looks a good squad to me. I'd prefer Mata to Bale but maybe not much in it.

Doubling up on Sunderland defence is not what I'd do especially given you have Gorkss and Clyne in there. Get some Norwich defensive cover while they're cheap. Maybe fire Wisdom in there if the funds allow for it.

bardsley => wisdom gw17 planned, no money for upgrading clyne and that defence is not very good I know. Seems like I won't get points for my defence no matter who there is, so might just give up and get some cheapies there...

Can't really blame you on Getting rid of Lambert. He's been quiet and rotated for far too long. I got rid of him on WC last week.

Think it was maybe a punt too far replacing him with reverse OOP Ruiz though. Now you'll have to find the cash for Berba or consider someone like Kone ( or even back to Lambert 😕 )

Is Sterling the most frustrating 5th midfielder to have as he is benchable and starting to look a real FPL prospect?

Maloney is easier to deal with as his scores are more steady.

It's a nice problem to have I think. But I've gone down the route of two rotating cheapies (Maloney & Sterling). It's week one for those two in my team and its going well (2pts Maloney on the bench and Sterling in the team)

Don't know if I'd feel comfortable just benching Sterling every single week, you'll miss out on some points that's for sure

Can't blame you, nice looking MF. But I'd consider losing Michu if it meant you could really improve your team elsewhere. For me it was a case of getting in Maloney to rotate with Sterling meant I could afford Suarez. Somewhat of a no-brainer IMO

I have thought about selling Michu but I got him for £6.9m and he provides a steady stream of points.

Sterling + Suarez for you. That is a good double act. Sterling assists and Suarez goals seem to be the way.

To be honest I'd rather have a backup player who can potentially score big than have one who won't. It means you are less likely to take hits to replace one of the other 7 when they are out for a week or two. Fellaini being a good example this week. (Although I appreciate that Maloney is playing Reading at home this week so will probably outscore him!)

Sterling appears to still be better at home and against easy opposition. I can't see him getting much in tough away games. Games like Swansea away though are tricky. He could easily score there. I think this week I'll play him due to Fellaini's card.

Good point. Goodison Park and Stamford Bridge in recent weeks he didn't look much of a threat. He will definitely relish playing at Anfield in front of his fans as he does seem to enjoy the attention. Swansea is one of those fixtures where it could go either way in terms of scoring big or not.

That just sounds like you are playing the game on a week to week basis. Berbatov 2 goals and an assist at the Emirates and he is gold dust. Sunderland finally get a win and now Fletcher is the one to have. The sending off made the difference yesterday so I wouldn't assume Sunderland will now start playing teams off the pitch and creating loads of chances.

I only watched the first half and Berbatov could have easily scored a couple. Plus what Count said, Sunderland putting 3 past 10 men chasing the game doesn't mean they've turned a corner. Fulham look like a side that are creating quite a lot of chances and it's all going through Berba. Season keeper barring injury.

agree.....keep Berba unless his form slips. He didn't score yesterday, but he was still a real threat. With Fulham's red and the need for Berbatov to come deeper towards the end it was just one of those games. Stoke will be a stern test this week, but apart from that I think he can score against pretty much anyone.

In this instance I would sell Tevez for RVP and make him captain and save the 4pts. Too much can happen in a week and this time next week all the noises could be to sell Tevez again.

Out of the other two I'd keep Ba.

There's always someone worse off than you my friend. I've yet to get up to what is for you a depressing low (70k) yet. I've been languishing around 100k and have dropped to 150k this week.

Still optimistic though. Pretty sure I was in the same position last year and then managed to win my mini-league and finish inside the top 2k.

      Plenty of time left yet

Not having any Man City cover has finally hit me hard. Considering two options (both for 1st hit of the season - so much for slow and steady).

    1) Pienaar to Sterling, Michu to Silva (which I can only just do - if Silva rises, I'm screwed)
    2) Pienaar to Sterling, Ba to Tevez

Lot of pros and cons to weigh up with both, so would appreciate any ideas... Team linked (I think).

Repost. Please help me and encourage me.

I was the league leader from GW 1 till GW 7. I also spend a lot of time on this site and think alot for my team and give so much time for it. But now I am down to 70k and now at 12 and 40 points behind leader at my money league. I m nervous. I nervously took 4 points hits to do

    RVP to Suarez
    Fellaini to Silva

    after Sat Night Games.
I want RVP back now. I know it was madness of me. I hate myself. 🙁
Please tell me something to help me encourage. Thank you very much.

Yes after seeing next two fixtures of RVP, I was shocked. I was late. I actaully did bring in Suarez to catch the price rise. But I lost so much value on RVP since I got him from the start.
Fellaini to Silva is logical though.

For anyone considering dropping Berba can i just warn you, he was incredible yesterday. Pure class.
Was unlucky not to score or assist and was at the heart of everything good Fulham did.

Had it not been for the sending off and injury to Kac which forced Berba to play in centre mid, we would undoubtedly be looking at more attacking points today.

Even playing CM there was a point in the game where he drifted forward, controlled a pass perfectly and without even breaking stride slid a perfectly weighted through ball to Sidwell, setting him up for a one-on-one which he missed.

What I'm trying to say is don't sell him on the back of this one blank where he was forced OOP and playing with 10 men
