Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

Clearly, Christian Benteke has more over his main rival for the lone forward role at Aston Villa than three extra letters at the end of his surname. While Darren Bent was expected to lead the line for the midlanders this season, it’s been the 21-year-old summer signing who has been backed by manager Paul Lambert in recent weeks; relegating Bent, who is now injured, to just one start and three substitute appearances since Gameweek 5.

So why is this young Belgian international player so highly regarded by Lambert? His track record at Belgian side Genk, where he left to join Villa on a four-year deal, gives a good indication of his goal scoring ability. During the 2011-12 season, Benteke scored 19 times in 37 appearances. Two years earlier, while on loan at another Belgian club, KV Kortrijk, the then-teenager scored a similarly impressive 15 goals in 34 appearances.

His first appearance for Aston Villa, as a substitute during the west midlands side’s Gameweek 4 away clash with Swansea, also showed his potential, as Benteke lifted the ball over Michael Vorm and scored on the volley; a sublime piece of skill to herald one of the Premier League’s newest talents.

Only one more goal has followed in the Premier League, scored during Villa’s Gameweek 9 home game with Norwich, though he also notched up two Premier League assists – this means that, when on the pitch, Benteke has been involved in 50% of his side’s goals so far. In addition, the Belgian has also recorded two bonus points to take him to 31 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where he is Villa’s second top points scorer, just two behind Matt Lowton.

Benteke has also impressed outside of the Premier League this term. Supplying an assist in Villa’s Capital One Cup third round win at City, he then struck twice in the last 16, as Lambert’s side saw off Swindon Town 3-2 last month. He has also scored four times in six appearances for his country over the last four months.

While many may question whether Benteke can cling on to a starting spot when Bent returns from injury (which is expected to be at the end of this month), Lambert’s ringing endorsement of the player’s recent display against United sums up just how highly he rates the Belgian. Having watched Benteke bully Chris Smalling before teeing up Andreas Weimann for the opener, the Villa boss went on to say:

“I think he’s not just a strong player, his technique is terrific and, for someone who is just 21, he can be anything he wants. Christian keeps going. He’s a brilliant guy as well. His character is terrific but my God, he’s a proper No.9. He did give the United centre-halves a run for their money”

Priced at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game (where he has also scored 31 points), Benteke has a mere 0.4% and 0.2% ownership respectively. With a favourable fixture list over the next four weeks (ARS, REA, qpr, STO), he has the potential to offer real value as a short-term punt and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing differential option amongst our forward three slots before Villa’s fixtures (liv, che, TOT) stiffen from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Is Taarabt + RVP to Valencia + Rooney this week, *totally* mental?

I could then switch Valencia to Walcott in a couple of weeks. I fancy Rooney over RVP for the next 3 games, and Valencia's threat of rotation is less than most too.

    Serious thoughts, please! 😉

      Yes.
But if you have a gut feeling then go for it.

Personally I think RVP will far outscore Rooney, but you never know.

Yes, transferring RVP out for anyone is mental enough on its own. Rooney might not even be fit. Valencia in terrible form. Satisfied?:)

FF is the most opinionated game I've ever played. It's different and not in line with the majority. But if that's what you want to do, do it! I hope it works out for you.

Rather then being shut down here, Rooney goes crazy and you think... Why did I listen to that guy on FFS.

I wouldn't do it personally, but it's not a completely far fetched move and I wouldn't be surprised to see it pay off.

This is why I don't even bother asking these questions. I do what I want anyway regardless.

Nothing wrong with affirming a move. But if you are going to ask every GW, then you may as well hand over your username and password with it so you do not have to bother.

Ha, there are people like that on here 🙂

The best part of this game, for me, is taking a (calculated) punt on someone different based on form, fixtures, whatever,.. and it paying off. Bragging rights with your mates are then yours for at least a week, lol.

Yeah nothing wrong with that, just not for me. Works for some people though.
I don't ask who people think will score higher as that will always boil down to my own personal opinon.
The only opinions I will ask will probably be around things like rotation and lineups which I may not know much about. I then make my decisions based around that.

Oh, don't worry about that. I like to tread my own path. The missus would probably tell you that I do the opposite of what people advise just for the sake of being different!

That's why I'm checking that I'm considering this move because of its merits and not just because it's ballsy/perverse. There is logic behind it (RVP 3 games in one week, Rooney on pens, rested last week due to a minor injury).

Hmm, all valid thoughts. Am put off Sterling by the fact he's risen 1m and I feel I've missed the boat. He doesn't excite me either - as though I've 'discovered' him 🙂 I like to take a punt with my 5th midfielder.

Will keep looking. Was eyeing up Puncheon before the FFS article, but something is stopping me. Lallana has been unlucky to date for Southampton too. They miss a GW which is annoying, albeit the one after Chelsea's.

What mids do we like from Sunderland? AJ seems overpriced at 6.8m.

Still think Rooney is going to have a little purple patch...

To be fair Bale is more the attacking type than the creator, so 7 big chances created isnt half bad. Too bad Ademonkey got sent off, having him in the team benefits Bale and the rest of Spurs a lot.

Big red arrow last week, any thoughts on how to improve these guys the coming 2 GWs? 1FT 0.8m in the bank.

    Jask Bego
    Baines Riise* Cameron Demel* Davies*
    Michu Fellaini Cazorla* Hazard* Sterling
    RVP Ba* Berba*

Players marked * are players I am considering doing something about, although Riise is the one that will probably go. Also a bit worried about not having Suarez or any City coverage.

Cuellar gives me more money to play around with, and enables me to cover Liverpool and City in one boom (for a -4 next week). Good move this, and if Enrique continues flying I can do Baines -> Enrique.

What he does is admirable, point I'm making is he i in the minority, FIFAs stance on this is correct. It protects the club who he chose to play for, in terms of injury etc. Seemst o be a trend, R Keane, Henry, T Cahill etc, looking to play in PL on short term basis. Commit to one or the other.

Much, much better? Wow, you obviously are pretty clueless. Yaya plays CDM, gets forward maybe 20 minutes every game if their behind. He`s fatigued since the start of the season. Silva is just regaining form, orchestrating everything and just superior to Toure in a FPL matter.

Looks weak in a lot of places to be honest, no United attacking cover AKA get RVP in that team. Wisdom is potentially at risk now other defenders are back fit, doubling up on city seems odd when their rotation is so frustrating... GK rotation is poor and any QPR GK that isnt playing seems stupid.

Whatever it was about, it's basically down to you being rude and obnoxious. And then you hide behind the idea that you are respected member of the community. I'm not particularly enamoured by your idea of harmony on here when you're effectively just being a snob elitist.

On the subject of cheap defenders(already asked about Bardsley, Martins, Caulker, Gallas above) anyone going for Clark? Villa got some good fixtures next week and he's a proper attackin threat

Obafemi Martins is now a defender?! 😉

Dont trust Villa personally. Cuellar, Turner, Shorey, Cameron, would be by only bets

Anyone know why Wilkinson [Stoke] was taken off after 32 mins last week. Is he just crap or what. Doesnt seem to be injured. I have him as my Stoke coverage.

    reposted

    Begovic (Foster)
    Baines Cuellar Caulker (Davies Clichy)
    Sidwell Mata Michu Bale (Kaca)
    RVP Suarez Berb

Problems with injuries, brought in Cuellar.

Should I take a hit to get rid of Clichy or Kaca and bench Sidwell?

How did Nastasic fair last night against the likes of Ronaldo & Benzema?
Is he begining to look nailed on these days. Starting to consider him as possible route to City coverage?
Or do people think its only a matter of time till Lescott is recalled?

I didn't think he looked good at all, but slightly better when they played with 4 at the back instead of 3/5. I'd expect Lescott to get recalled, but Mancini seems to love him. So in other words; no idea. You're welcome!

Kompany and Hart are the only 2 nailed on defenders at City, I think you'll be panicking each week to see if he'll play and that = bad selection, unless you've got decent cover.

Clichy is pretty nailed on imo. Nastasic more likely to start than Klingon these days, but not enough so that i`d want either in my team.
