Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

Clearly, Christian Benteke has more over his main rival for the lone forward role at Aston Villa than three extra letters at the end of his surname. While Darren Bent was expected to lead the line for the midlanders this season, it’s been the 21-year-old summer signing who has been backed by manager Paul Lambert in recent weeks; relegating Bent, who is now injured, to just one start and three substitute appearances since Gameweek 5.

So why is this young Belgian international player so highly regarded by Lambert? His track record at Belgian side Genk, where he left to join Villa on a four-year deal, gives a good indication of his goal scoring ability. During the 2011-12 season, Benteke scored 19 times in 37 appearances. Two years earlier, while on loan at another Belgian club, KV Kortrijk, the then-teenager scored a similarly impressive 15 goals in 34 appearances.

His first appearance for Aston Villa, as a substitute during the west midlands side’s Gameweek 4 away clash with Swansea, also showed his potential, as Benteke lifted the ball over Michael Vorm and scored on the volley; a sublime piece of skill to herald one of the Premier League’s newest talents.

Only one more goal has followed in the Premier League, scored during Villa’s Gameweek 9 home game with Norwich, though he also notched up two Premier League assists – this means that, when on the pitch, Benteke has been involved in 50% of his side’s goals so far. In addition, the Belgian has also recorded two bonus points to take him to 31 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where he is Villa’s second top points scorer, just two behind Matt Lowton.

Benteke has also impressed outside of the Premier League this term. Supplying an assist in Villa’s Capital One Cup third round win at City, he then struck twice in the last 16, as Lambert’s side saw off Swindon Town 3-2 last month. He has also scored four times in six appearances for his country over the last four months.

While many may question whether Benteke can cling on to a starting spot when Bent returns from injury (which is expected to be at the end of this month), Lambert’s ringing endorsement of the player’s recent display against United sums up just how highly he rates the Belgian. Having watched Benteke bully Chris Smalling before teeing up Andreas Weimann for the opener, the Villa boss went on to say:

“I think he’s not just a strong player, his technique is terrific and, for someone who is just 21, he can be anything he wants. Christian keeps going. He’s a brilliant guy as well. His character is terrific but my God, he’s a proper No.9. He did give the United centre-halves a run for their money”

Priced at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game (where he has also scored 31 points), Benteke has a mere 0.4% and 0.2% ownership respectively. With a favourable fixture list over the next four weeks (ARS, REA, qpr, STO), he has the potential to offer real value as a short-term punt and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing differential option amongst our forward three slots before Villa’s fixtures (liv, che, TOT) stiffen from Gameweek 17 onwards.

1.)  Walcott to Morrison this week and then Jelly to Aguero/Suarez next week both for free. Keeping Baines.
2.)  Baines to a cheapie defender. Walcott to Silva/Cazorla for a hit and then Jelly to Aguero/Suarez next week?

So need to decide where to go from here.

    Currently

    Bego
    Sagna Baines Bardsley
    Mata Bale Nolan Sterling
    RVP Berbatov Lambert

    Subs: Foster, Boyce Demel Fellaini
    1FT 2.1 in bank.

What I did last week, and it's a long term move, was get in Nolan and Fellaini for value. As usual it looks slightly hazier when you look at the fixtures. But I suppose I might as well stick with the plan, are those four mids decent enough?

Up front is the big dilemma, I know putting money up front is the way to go but how? I've been planning Berb > Ba this week against leaky Southampton, but maybe I should aim higher for Suarez, Tevez, Giroud .. or even Aguero?

I prefer Giroud for the longer term. Arsenal scoring alot these days, Giroud has improved immensely these past 2 months and Newcastle are struggling. Cant expect Ba to do something basically on his own every game. Aguero could be worth a look as well, but then again he costs a helluvalot more, so meh. Im happy with Giroud, fixures are also in his favour atm.

i really feel giroud is gonna have rake in the points right up til the jan wc where you can ship him out. if i was in this guys financial situation giroud is surely where the party is at. if you would be willing to get rid of nolan (ridiculous to get him IN with such terrible fixtures for the sake of 0.1 or 0.2) to someone like maloney you would be able to afford tevez who i am trying to figure out how to squeeze in atm.

get giroud, and if youre willing to eat your nolan transfer get tevez instead

I wouldn't, but he wouldn't be the worst 4th mid with our upcoming fixtures. I'd think about replacing Guthrie soon if you want to have Sterling as a 5th mid.

Yep, looked into this on the night he was rising from 4.4m. Thing is, many of those stats were vs QPR... for all we know, Valencia could have the same figures next week!

At 4.5m he's ridiculous value though. Worth a punt.

I think the United fixtures are likely to produce some cricket scores so any united mid seems a good bet right now. Valencia or Young are good differentials. Others to consider are HBA(cause Pardew back to 4-3-3) Puncheon, Ramirez, Lallana- because of fixtures and attacking form- also differs and also Adam Johnson or Sessegnon if you feel really risky( they have awesome fixtures, but if they will do anything with them is another story)

Had HBA earlier in the season, but got rid at the right time really when it was clear Pardew was playing Ba and Cisse up top together.

Newcastle are struggling right now without Cabaye. Tbh, I'll be watching how Ba performs against the Saints and see if it's time to lose my Newcastle contingent despite their fixtures.

If Pardew does go 433 then HBA becomes perferable over Ba, imo as a similarly priced midfielder. We'll have to wait and see!

Fancy Southampton to get a result this weekend or a high scoring draw after their morale boosting performance against QPR - should be a good game.

Obviously there are risks, but so far the minutes have been there only 1 early pull out. Aand he had as many shots inside the box last game as RVP 😀 so. I think some points are due for the united wings. Also with Welbeck playing the full game in midweek its got to be Young for the left wing spot unless Nani is fit.

thanks for the advice guys but the way I see it, a player has to be in form to be worthy of consideration in my team. valencia isnt in great form (not scoring or assisting). i understand the desire to get valencia but there are so many ridiculously strong options in midfield in this price bracket that you really shouldnt be wasting money on a punt when everyone else is struggling to get in one of silva/bale/cazorla/walcott/mata/hazard. you should be looking at these guys and spending the valencia money elsewhere.

van persie and rafael are the ONLY united picks people should be considering imo.

The reason i wouldnt touch Young is because he`s been performing too little to be assured starts. Nobody knows from game to game. I`d atleast want to see him play well a game, regardless of returns before i got him in. Or anybody else for that matter. For my liking, none of the United-mids tempt me atm. And i have RVP up front, so im pretty much covered anyway.

I considered adding RVP to Roo but there is no way I can afford it. I just want more United I can see them getting 4-5 goals in 3 of the next 5 games. And they could get some vs WHM and City as well. And Valencia is just so boring I will rather stick to my current players than get him.

I see your point, and for me, Young is far less attractive than Valencia given Wellbeck, Rooney, and Nani can all play from the left.

We have to remember that strikers only get 4 points for a goal. If United score 3 or 4, then someone is assisting those goals at 3 points a time. Just look at Sterling's FPL points last week (11?) without actually scoring.

The only thing that concerns me about Valencia (and the reason I'd prefer Walcott if he wasn't injured) is his hesitation in front of goal. Realistically, points are going to come from assists than goals.

Meh, dont see Rooney ever playing wide left. Wellbeck occasionally sure, and Nani is far better on the right. He`s even had a falling out with Ferguson afaik, so hes not that likely to figure in the near future. Anyway, Young is a great option when he gets some form to him, but as of right now, none of United`s wingers are delivering. As for Valencia, he`s been playing poor so far this season. Having said that, all of this could change this weekend. We all know Ferguson loves a good hairdryer treatment, and after going 0-1 twice in a row im sure he`s going to want goals galore and QPR basically cant defend.

After dropping Tevez and having an abysmal week my FF confidence is shot and I have overthought myself into not having a clue what is going on anymore...

I had almost decided to drop Routledge and Ivanovic for -4 to get Silva and JEnrique, but now realise that will leave me in GW14 with bad fixture defensive hell (Boyce[MCI] Baird [che] McCart [mun] JE[TOT]) and still 3 everton players at home to Arsenal (Jel, Pie,Fel)

I am wondering if I should

A] just forget about Silva/JE for this week, save the 4pts and just do Routledge to Morrison, then next week do a -4 and take out Boyce and Pienaar or Jelavic.....

B] just do it and worry about Everton overstock and geenral defensive hell next week.

I do really need to get rid of Routledge this week though....

I agree with you though - hopefully it is just a blip, fwd and mids are good, apart from Routledge - I have wanted to get rid of him for weeks. Maybe switch him out and its all good and I just forget about the lure of Silva and JE....

Only times he has ever scored points he was on my bench, and he only played 29 mins last time out. last five weeks : 2,2,2,1,1 = unsustainable....

looking at your team a bit closer i would worry you have too much money invested in defence. clean sheets are really hard to come by this year and although all your defs are solid picks, the 0.5 you could be saving on the likes of baird, boyce and the 1.0 on simpson adds up to a serious player in midfield eg silva. i think that is the main problem in your squad long term as you wont be able to afford the big hitters you need whilst losing points+money in defence as you wont get reliable clean sheets. i would even consider wildcarding next week if i were in your position. quite a lot of subtle dead weight in there which is going to be costly long term...

routledge is def high priority though and id do him to sterling/maloney. both good shouts and i dont buy into the idea of missing the bandwagon on sterling. at 5.4 he is still pretty amazing value for a nailed on winger/forward. he will get you points with the fixtures he has

            Thanks 2legit -

I am with you on the defence = I think Boyce and Ivan def need to go soon, Simpson next 3GWs are not too bad for him.

Boyce and Baird are both supposed to be OOP chances but are returning sod all. Ivan just too dear.

If I wildcarded today I could actually get team as follows:

            Federici/ Ruddy
            Turner/Morrison/McCartney/Cuellar/JEnrik
            Silva/Santi/Hernadez/Fella/Johnson

Aguero getting negative net transfers today 😕
Owners must not be happy that he is starting now and scoring pleenty.

Knee jerking to Tevez most likely.

You say KJ i say chasing points. Odds on the same people making the very reverse transfer next time Aguero gets a brace while Tevez gets a blank? Just to underline how stupid that transfer would be, Aguero scored two goals that game himself..

That he is. Not to say that Tevez is a bad pick, in fact he`s a great player and great FPL-value. Its just that the majority of people playing this game usually base their transfer strategy on who got the most points last game. Obviously thats not a tactic people frequenting these forums should seek out.

I'd be more worried about your red flags and do Kacanckilcsh to Puncheon or Maloney. I'd also drop Ben Ahole over Hazard... and Demel and Nelsen aren't exactly promising gold this week.

Fulham are leaking goals home and away as well, so for me Crouch is the least of your worries right now.

Think Stoke will keep a CS vs Fulham?

I have both Begovic and Cameron playing, but sods law suggests Berbatov will score. I'm therefore thinking of doing Cameron > Cuellar instead and spreading the risk.

Should I play Britton or Gorkss this GW, or take a hit to replace Britton with someone who will score?

    Migs (Ruddy)
    Baines, ShawX, Clyne, Gorkss (Nelson)
    Bale, Michu, Silva (Fellaini, Britton)
    RVP, Suarez, Berb

    Thanks

Valencia -> Silva, Pienaar to Morrison and Figueroa -> Gorkks for a hit? or should I wait a week, bearing in mind Morrison and Silva will probably rise in the mean time?

Why are you getting rid of Pienaar when he's at home to Norwich and there's no Fellaini stealing his points?

thats a good point, was focusing on the fact that Silva and Morrison will more than likely rise, meaning I wont be able to afford them next GW

    a) Cameron ➡ Sagna

    or

    b) Begovic ➡ Mig

Carrying two Stoke which I don't want to do and the fact they line up against Berba is making it even less appealing.

2.4mil in the bank which isn't saved for any plans so either move could be for any player basically. Verminator?

    thoughts. thanks

Vermaelen seems quite injury prone, aswell as that he seems to have lost the attacking presence he used to have. You could do Cameron to Rafael for United coverage, clean sheets havent been the best but he does give you the chance of assist points

Evans has been, and currently is injured. Atelast wait until he starts a game before you get him in, groin injuries have a tendency to come back.
