Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

Clearly, Christian Benteke has more over his main rival for the lone forward role at Aston Villa than three extra letters at the end of his surname. While Darren Bent was expected to lead the line for the midlanders this season, it’s been the 21-year-old summer signing who has been backed by manager Paul Lambert in recent weeks; relegating Bent, who is now injured, to just one start and three substitute appearances since Gameweek 5.

So why is this young Belgian international player so highly regarded by Lambert? His track record at Belgian side Genk, where he left to join Villa on a four-year deal, gives a good indication of his goal scoring ability. During the 2011-12 season, Benteke scored 19 times in 37 appearances. Two years earlier, while on loan at another Belgian club, KV Kortrijk, the then-teenager scored a similarly impressive 15 goals in 34 appearances.

His first appearance for Aston Villa, as a substitute during the west midlands side’s Gameweek 4 away clash with Swansea, also showed his potential, as Benteke lifted the ball over Michael Vorm and scored on the volley; a sublime piece of skill to herald one of the Premier League’s newest talents.

Only one more goal has followed in the Premier League, scored during Villa’s Gameweek 9 home game with Norwich, though he also notched up two Premier League assists – this means that, when on the pitch, Benteke has been involved in 50% of his side’s goals so far. In addition, the Belgian has also recorded two bonus points to take him to 31 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), where he is Villa’s second top points scorer, just two behind Matt Lowton.

Benteke has also impressed outside of the Premier League this term. Supplying an assist in Villa’s Capital One Cup third round win at City, he then struck twice in the last 16, as Lambert’s side saw off Swindon Town 3-2 last month. He has also scored four times in six appearances for his country over the last four months.

While many may question whether Benteke can cling on to a starting spot when Bent returns from injury (which is expected to be at the end of this month), Lambert’s ringing endorsement of the player’s recent display against United sums up just how highly he rates the Belgian. Having watched Benteke bully Chris Smalling before teeing up Andreas Weimann for the opener, the Villa boss went on to say:

“I think he’s not just a strong player, his technique is terrific and, for someone who is just 21, he can be anything he wants. Christian keeps going. He’s a brilliant guy as well. His character is terrific but my God, he’s a proper No.9. He did give the United centre-halves a run for their money”

Priced at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game (where he has also scored 31 points), Benteke has a mere 0.4% and 0.2% ownership respectively. With a favourable fixture list over the next four weeks (ARS, REA, qpr, STO), he has the potential to offer real value as a short-term punt and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing differential option amongst our forward three slots before Villa’s fixtures (liv, che, TOT) stiffen from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Given up on Lukaku, Doos? It's a shame but probably the right thing to do. I wish I could see my way to dropping The Racist or The Smoker for Giroud.

Very spangly midfield you have there. I like it all a lot, except your benching headache (next week onwards).

Returning to the discussion of how making transfers is actually destroying my team, I do find it amazing that for the last couple of weeks I made transfers and took the odd hit to get a team I was very happy with at kickoff and pretty much every time they got a meh score. Aside from my clearly awful taste in players, I guess there's so much uncertainty in player scores on a weekly basis that I really might as well save my transfer this week.

The guys I fear not having are Ba and Suarez. That's basically what stands in the way of saving it.

      ^^^^this.

This sums up my season. Ok team, want a better one...make transfer...guy I transfer out scores huge (Tevez, Mata, Haz, Bale) guy I get in doesn't.

I've seemingly forgotten one of my golden rules of last year of never ditch a player who is good. So as tempting as it is to ditch Fellani for Silva I'm not going to, as Fellaini will no doubt come back with a huge score next week.

Saving transfers is the key this season...choose some heavy hitters and stick with them, transfer cheaper ones and replace injured players....that's it from now on. Mata/Bale/RVP are staying put for the foreseeable.

Yes, that is a factor...I'm keeping an eye on that situation. But have a feeling it could help rather than hinder Mata...not only being Spanish, but working well with Torres at an international level.

I think you might just have summed up a long forgotten and very successful approach there!

When you see ghost ship teams and casuals who just pick their favourite big names do well, you realize they don't drop points so often on over elaborate transfers.

I am minded to save this week then. The next I can make up to three changes for a hit if I need to rejig everything.

I'm actually minded to save this week and next...thereby foregoing a transfer and then doing Baines and Lambert out for Suarez and a 5m defender in gwk 15. I know Baines is good, but he's not going to haunt me week in week out like Suarez has been doing and Mata/Bale no doubt will if I ditch them.

Im of the opinion, of playing every transfer for short term points from here on out until January wildcard. With so many games in such a tight space, I'll take points when I can get them as opposed to long term moves that right now are difficult to plan for.

I've tried that and failed...its a tough tactic to pull off...you can get it right and reap the rewards, or as I have get it wrong and physically watch your points leave your team.

i'll tell you my philosophy. its based on baseball. wait wait here my out

they play 162 games a season and so you get huge slumps and huge highs were they play like god because their form is so good. but everyone in baseball knows that each players stats will look the same at the end of the season

so you cannot kneejerk too much. puncheon is a good kneejerk, but the big players will score heavy in the future. eg, baines/hazard are all due soon

EAch year I learn a new lesson. Last year it was to build team value in the first half of the season. This year it is to be patient with heavy hitters during their slumps. Money can still be made on the cheap punts. I got Sterling for 4.5 and have made a hefty profit on him now. I'm anticipating the same with Shorey and Cueller as well.

the only defenders who have jumped high in price were the ones who were going through crazy seasons like huth and baines, defenders dont tend to go up too much. look at kompany last year, it took him ages to rise to about 6.5 from 6.0, almost half a season

good point,....profit is also only an issue if I sell...they are season keepers for me unless they get injured. That is why RVP used to be so good for team value...he'd rocket in price....get injured...you pocket the change...wait for him to get fit, buy him back cheaper and start the cycle again.

i actually just brought in puncheon for fellaini. His underlying stats are good, they have a good schedule, and he is going up in price. Its not like you should take him or play him over your big hitters, but for the price it doesnt get much better for now. Sometimes kneejerking to call a move a kneejerk is just as bad.

              that and:
              SOU nor vs EVE ars
              LIV sou vs MCY eve
              EVE tot vs SOU rea
then sou is off with STO eve
              SOU sun vs WHM eve

in these 5 games I dont see any pressing issues for Fellaini - he may even start dropping in price, while a couple of good results for puncheon will see his price rise and also allows me to start working on defensive upgrades while keeping my attacking intent.

              just an opinion

I'm sticking with Mata (8.9) and Cazorla (9.0), RVP (13.0) and Tevez (9.0) for the season now. Hazard is on his way though after the Fulahm game to fund Saurez in a dream team strikeforce! 🙂

I don't like to chop and change, especially when I have value getting players early.

Yeah, I got that problem. I don't want either out for a hit because I want to keep them and they'll both be back on wednesday. So I'm sitting tight and playing 4 at the back.

Every week the top gameweek rank is some kind of ghost ship with half a dozen dead players so I've got to stand a chance, surely?

Good move getting Suarez last week! I still reckon Ba has got some goals in him, just hopefully not as many as Suarez!
Last week was a total nightmare, went from a GW rank of 7K in GW11 to a GW rank of 2.2M in GW12!! :(. Here's hoping we have a better outing this week!

Yer I dropped 100k, painful. Trying to work out a way of doing Berbatov>Aguero. With 2FT next week, if Bale does not do the business Im considering similar move to you in order to fund it, bit risky, but I fancy Aguero to explode soon.

Yeah, I have a feeling Aguero will go crazy soon now they're out of Europe (love saying that as a United fan :)). High risk, high reward...speculate to accumulate is the way to play it. I'm looking at getting Silva in soon from shipping out my Everton players.

Sunderland may be the biggest mirage of all for coming weeks. They are above the league average for shots allowed in the box, and they may start regressing in goals allowed. It is unrealistic to keep giving up that many shots in the box and still not allow goals.
