The ScoutCast – Episode Ninety – Subtle

Maybe I underestimated Granville. Maybe his throwaway comment made at 10.32 on a weary Wednesday evening wasn’t throwaway at all. Maybe Granville is a Fantasy football mind games genius.

Regardless of whether his plan was pre-meditated and devious, it certainly worked as you’ll find out in this, episode ninety of the ScoutCast.

Aside from my sidekick’s scheming, we give dear old Leighton another rinse following his twanged hamstring, tackle the template midfield yet again, check on the market movements in “all aboard” and, of course, look forward to the weekend action. We also start spending points on the ScoutCast team: it’s the slippery slope. Where’s Granville’s genius when you need it?

Reveal the evil plan via this link or simply stream this latest episode on the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

LOL partially true tho. actually read some posts AFTER the pepin's that they're not doing Suarez for a 4 point hit. therefore pretty confident that it was my own decision as i had paused for awhile before i hit the 'confirm button' :p

      Enrique owner sans Suarez too.

Not that i think enrique/sterling will score in stead of suarez, just that i wont be surprised with Liverpool as a whole will choke and lose 0-1

      Ergo,
      Im comfortable.

You've nothing to be confident about. You pick the players for their individual merits. In terms of assists you would also be banking on Suarez doing well so these guys get them.

Must say I'm surprised to read of anyone considering benching Sterling at home to Southampton. First, the Southampton defence which every man and his dog is bringing Suarez in for and even captaining him - Sterling is possibly #1 candidate to assist him. Secondly he is a bubbling goal threat - he hit the bar with a beautiful shot from the edge of the area against Swansea at the weekend.

fantasy football is a gambling game...your mindset is risk-averse

I scored 174 points in the last 3 weeks which is an average of 58 and a pretty good average for these 3 weeks especially since I captained van Persie rather than Tevez when he had his big week

but my scores were 73-29-72...I didn't like scoring 29 but I understand that luck in any one week is a huge factor

this week I have to decide whether to bench Sterling (I have Suarez) or Fellaini or Lambert...(that's easy...I'll bench Lambert)

but I really want Berbatov for Lambert because he's got a great run of fixtures for the next 8 weeks...it's a hit

should I do it? transfer my bench player for a hit and bench Fellaini or Sterling? I don't know? It's a gamble?

should I be cautious or should I gamble?

the point I'm making is that you don't need to be risk-averse...I used to think like you but now I try to be more flexible

    Bego (Jasske)

Jones (wba), Mertasac, Cuellar (Clark, Gorkss)

    Mata, Silva, Sterling, Sessegon (Michu)

    Ba, RVP, Suarez (c)

Well, drafted Suarez in there so expect his yellow this weekend... and a Tevez rampage

Quite like the look of the team, the def's a bit sketchy might be investing in someone big soon... but for the time I'm quite happy

I may get Silva for Mata but might hold off... Probably not worth the -4

Are you really (c) him, though? It's a common myth - and a wrong one - that you should (c) someone if you bring him in for a hit. Quite the contrary - bringing someone in for a hit is a risk in and of itself so (c) the player means double the risk...

Ive always thought its the other way around..

Meaning the player you brought in for need only to score half the points to justify the hit if you captain him.

That's the popular misconception. It's a simply tradeoff between risk and return, really. Bringing a player for a hit is a risky proposition - you are already -4. Captaining him doubles your risk. If you fail, you are double-screwed.

It's especially true if you have a viable alternative for a captain. There is no reason why you should captain someone you brought in for a hit EXCEPT if he is the best captain choice on your team.

pepin sorry but you are talking tripe and getting in a muddle...see my long post higher up this page...

"bringing a player for a hit is a risky proposition"...every decision you make is a gamble...taking a hit is a gamble...leaving your team the same is a gamble

captaining van persie is a gamble
            captaining suarez is a gamble
just decide who you think will get the most points

it doesn't matter a jot if you have other Liverpool or Man Utd players...you captain the player who you think will get most points...you bench the player who will get fewest points

Awesome front 7 but I sold Hazzy, Lambert and Sterling for it a few weeks back for hits when they all returned but it does look nice.. Defence is a bit shoddy and it's only now the big teams are backing up the cleanies so Gotta drop someone eventually... maybe Caz if i have too...

RVP or Suarez Capt... not sure yet but Lucas back shud get some sweet Suarez action going on

        Wishful thinking but fingers crossed

    @ Isacki

Read what you wrote about Sterling - if you don't play him against Southampton at home, then when would you? Couple of questions for you:

    1. Some rumours about him getting a rest? Especially with Lucas back...?
    2. Cazrola, Michu, Fellaini, Bale - how can I possibly bench one of them? Maybe bench Fletcher (nor)?

Why would he be rested, when he already is being rested for all the other comps bar the PL? It's not like Assaidi and Suso are threatening him when we have a LB playing on the wing.

Ok so i totally get where you were coming from earlier cos i realised captaining a player you just brought in for hit DENIES the opportunity of the alternative captain. Its especially bad when you actually do have a good alternative captain.

But what if in a situation where the player you brought in for a hit makes (roughly) double his score in the week anyway WITHOUT affecting your captain choice? Im talking about DGWs.

E.g. For sunderland DGW im thinking to bring in cuellar for -4 knowing that hell probably at least make 4pts that week. Or if he gets 1 baps each (3+3pts) ive essentially "bought" an FT for free. I should do this right? Am i thinking it the right way?

DGW's are different. But I wouldn't captain a defender, even in a DGW. I mean if it were Kompany and City had Reading and QPR at home, I would consider it. Or if it were Baines and Everton had two good games.

But I wouldn't captain Cuellar for the DGW and I probably would not even bring him in for a hit.

Understood. Yes, it would be neutral. Two things to consider: 1) defenders can get less than 2 points and 2) would you want to have him after the DGW?

"…you captain the player who you think will get most points…you bench the player who will get fewest points"

I understand this but now im talking about taking hits. How do you make judgement about which player is worth taking -4 hits for, cliffhanger? What you said in the quote is right, but im saying, theres an extention to that quote which says; "also take hits for players that will repay those points in the short run" is all.

GAmble is gamble, but isnt it worth discussing taking a hit for cuellar in his DGW better than taking a hit for Granero next GW?

What if Cazorla scored next game and Walcott didn't?

            It'd be back to 28/30 to Walcott's 30/31 over 5 games.

It would be a wasted transfer right now and you know it.

Oh and what about that 0? Do I ignore the injury proneness etc? It's not a sacred cow it's common sense I'm using.

Naturally. When you stick to a player with modest potential it's common sense. For everyone else, it's a sacred cow.

Feel free to stick with a 9.5er who scores the odd goal and has largely failed to assist, be my guest. But if you watch Arsenal's CL games you'll see he does much the same thing. And crucially, there are better options at much cheaper prices. Even at heavy hitter, Bale is showing what a true heavy hitter is.

Bale is more aggressively attacking than Cazorla. I never expected Cazorla to massively rival Bale but up until two games ago they were neck and neck for returns. And if Cazorla does something this weekend and Bale was to blank they'd be closer again.

And Bale has the same amount of assists as Cazorla...What the hell are you on about exactly? Of course there are some good options at cheaper prices but whilst I have had Caz he has done well enough for me.

You're getting carried away with the last GW or so and as usual being smug about your own choices. But at the end of the day, Cazorla > Walcott is not the most urgent or essential transfer to be doing in my eyes. So stop trying to pretend it is.

I brought Enrique in already. With (1) easy fixtures coming up (2) he played as left forward (3) Rodgers has expressed how he was impressed by Enrique's play with the media (4) he is only $5.8, I don't know why you are still not sold on.

For the upcoming 7 GWs, I am expecting him to produce 1 to 2 goals + 2 to 3 assists + 4 clean sheets + 5 bonus. Can easily be the best scoring defenders in this period.

From what I see Enrique has been so nail-on to start.

          (1) Suso was totally ineffective. No goal & no assist in 8 league games he played as left wing. Also, he has a weak body and very ineffective to do pressuring at upper field.

          (2) Confirm Rodgers prefer Enrique far more than Downing at the left wing position.

          (3) The only threat is Joe Cole, but his play is weaker and far less consistent than Enrique now, so the best case for Cole is to sub Enrique at around 70-min. Normally not good for others but good for Enrique as a defender (higher chance for a CS)

Well he played at Left Back for 195 out of those 200 games.

You just need to take a look of how Rodgers used his wings (say, Scott Sinclair) at Swansea last year, you will see the potential of Enrique (don't forget he will give you CS points even he don't get you any attacking points)

What's everyone take on Rafael? Smalling and Jones getting minutes slowly. Is he due to get rested/rotated? The kid runs like hell and drives the whole flank he can't maintain form if playing through out the start of the season. Has anyone pinpointed a selling time? After Reading maybe?

I actually don't mind if he gets rested for one game. If that happens so be it. There are no signs just yet that it will happen. But I really think he is nailed on for most of the season. And while CS have been few and far between...he offers attacking returns and coverage of Man Utd CS throughout the season. And historically they keep lots.

Get Jevans instead if you don't have him imo. I can't really understand why people would rather sell Rafael last week than Baines. Baines is such poor value over the last 10 weeks or so and Everton have literally shown no chance of a CS in what feels like an eternity. At least with Rafael you can conceive a CS happening when you watch them. With Everton it's just a hopeless cause lately.

    Afternoon all

So, since I bought Sagna he's scored an astonishing 1, 1, 1, 0, 2 and now he's injured. Picked the wrong Arsenal defender there and no mistake. Sagna > Enrique seems like the transfer to do, even though it leaves me with three Liverpool. Gulp!

    Team would be:

    Begovic
    Enrique Baines Demel
    Bale Cazorla Sterling Mata
    Suarez Fletcher RVP

    Ruddy Puncheon Davies Cameron

I don't like it much but I don't really want to take a hit. Baines > Evans tempts me, particularly after SAF's comments about grinding out wins the other night, but it can wait I reckon.

Given the fixture, I do have all of these 3 atm. However, I don't treat Sterling as a triple up factor, coz I had him when he was just $4.5, can always bench him if the fixture is not right. Will play Suarez and Enrique no matter who is the opponent though

There is no security in a captaincy. RVP just has the record and the aura about him that makes him feel like a magnet for the armband.

I've captained Ba twice in home games this year and he's delivered twice. I even regret not captaining him against Swansea a few weeks back as RVP failed. I also captained Ba when RVP was away to Chelsea. He's a reliable enough chap is Ba! 🙂

Dribbler, I have to say, you make no sense 😀 Everything we do is a gamble? No. We take calculated risks on here, based on statistics and real evidence. Of course there is no certainty of the outcome, but certainly not every decision has the same element of risk.

Captaining RvP is a less risky decision than captaining Gorkss.

The point I was making to Kak was simple: You don't have to captain a player you brought in for a hit simply because you brought him in for a hit, hoping that captaining him would reduce your loss. You captain the best captain choice, simple.

Been following this debate of yours. Personally I think if you take a hit to bring an attacker in for a particular game and feel strongly enough that he will deliver then that surely makes him automatically a potential captain. That's usually how it feels to me. Usually a hit means there is a strong incentive to get someone in for a good fixture or their good form so they go hand in hand sometimes.

Sure, if you bring in a player that is the best (c) option, than do it. But a lot of people feel compelled to (c) someone just because they paid -4 points for him, thinking they can 'atone their sin.' It's silly.

      i agree.

eg. i think of my team as 12 players cos the (c) is double. if i have three players from one team i Never (c) one of them because that makes up 1/3 of my team and therefore 1/3 of my points from one football result - theres always the chance that result is a 1-0 loss.

Hmmm...this last post is full of wisdom

"Everything we do is a gamble? No"

rubbish...every transfer or non-transfer is a gamble...this game is just free gambling based on football (a game we like) rather than expensive gambling based on horse-racing (say) that most of us don't have any interest in or else can't afford

"We take calculated risks on here, based on statistics and real evidence"

...fine but that's just saying the same thing in a different way...I said "gamble" but of course I'm looking at statistics and evidence

"The point I was making to Kak was simple...etc"

...I agree with this...it's very sensible and yes you did say it above

you also said this..."bringing someone in for a hit is a risk in and of itself so (c) the player means double the risk"...and you said this "Bringing a player for a hit is a risky proposition – you are already -4. Captaining him doubles your risk. If you fail, you are double-screwed"...and both comments are a load of nonsense...it was those comments that I was talking about

      nice score btw
