Watchlist

The Watchlist – Shane Long

Among the most eye catching statistics that have defined Shane Long’s excellent season is that he has scored or assisted in every one of West Brom’s seven home games. The entire team’s outstanding Hawthorns form under manager Steve Clarke has been a key factor in helping Long achieve this feat, while keen competition for places up front is also keeping the Irishman on his toes, with Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku, Marc Antoine-Fortune and Markus Rosenberg all waiting in the wings.

Although Long is clearly the top choice striker and has played more minutes than his attacking rivals, Gameweek 14 served as a timely reminder that no one in the West Brom ranks is free from a slap in the face from the fickle hand of rotation. An unused sub during that game, Long watched on as his team suffered a 3-1 away defeat to Swansea.

In all likelihood, this is down to a hamstring issue that has been plaguing the player all season. Despite Clarke’s declaration that he has no concerns over his fitness, it’s likely that this weekend’s home derby against Stoke had a significant bearing in his team line-up last night:

“I’ll make the changes from game to game as and when I think I should make the changes. If Shane has to play 90 minutes he can play 90 minutes no problem. He can play two in four days and three in a week if I need him but then I’d have to manage the training.”

The Baggies subsequent defeat at Swansea may just persuade Clarke that Long is a player he cannot afford to rest or rotate. The last time he failed to make the starting 11 in a Premier League fixture, during the Gameweek 5 home victory with Reading, he came on as a 65th minute sub to register an assist for the game’s only goal, suggesting that even if dropped he still has a chance to shine.

The standing of the opposition also fails to dent Long’s confidence at home, with Champions League holders Chelsea falling to the West Brom sword in Gameweek 11, when he racked up 12 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game after scoring and assisting in a valiant 2-1 victory. He also accrued maximum FPL bonus points that week.

As if such home reliability wasn’t enough to tempt managers, there are signs that Long is also able to produce on the road. Two of his five goals this campaign have come away from the Hawthorns, with his strike against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light during West Brom’s 4-2 victory in Gameweek 13 the latest to prove Long may deserve to start every game.

Already this season Long is the sixth best striker in the Sky Sports game, where he is priced at 7.7m and sits on 64 points. In the FPL game he is priced even more generously at 6.3m and has 63 points, making him the eighth best striker and the joint best West Brom asset alongside midfielder James Morrison. Despite his consistency, he is owned by just over 6% of FPL managers, though the Republic of Ireland international clearly offers a strong mid-price alternative to the likes of Steven Fletcher, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert up top.

With three home games in the next four gameweeks (STO, ars, WHU, NOR) Long looks to be a safe bet for points in the short term. Even West Brom’s Christmas matches from Boxing Day to New Year’s Day (qpr, man, FUL) offer the prospect of points. Clearly, this is shaping up to be the Irish international’s best season yet – he has already matched last term’s bonus tally of nine in the FPL game and is well on course to surpass his final FPL points total for 2011/12 of 97.

Getting close to be in the top 50k now 56k atm hoping to get into top 50k next week so need some help! Been advised on other pages that my front 8 is strong and don’t need to be changed so it looks like its a defensive change this week, thinking about Demel>B.Jones or Rafael>Enrique, thinking about the first one more as feel Sterling Enrique and Suarez is Liverpool overkill, all opinions, improvements and help is welcomed, thankyou.

    Schwarzer(5.0), Begovic(4.8)

    Rafael (6.0), Caulker (4.8), Cuellar(4.5), Demel(4.0), Nelsen(3.9)

    Bale(9.6), Walcott(8.7), Fellaini(7.3), Michu(6.9), Sterling(5.1)

    Van Persie(13.5), Suarez(10.2), Berbatov(7.2).

This was my original thought. RVPs numbers are actually pretty good this GW, and he'll hopefully be even more important away from home. I think maybe the lure of the SOT fixture is slightly overrated, they do seem a little better lately.

    Begovic

I've got a question, anyone else care to discuss this?

But where are Chelsea's goals more likely to come from?

    - They've had 3 shots on target in 186 minutes of football since Benitez joined.
    - Torres is dreadful in front of goal.
    - Mata was playing extremely wide and deep compared to his normal role.
    - Hazard doesn't look threatening at all.

It's just getting me thinking, barring their defence is it really worth keeping Mata if you already have him?

I'm pretty sure Benitez was looking for a draw against City, and he got it, and then Mata was benched, Chelsea did look threatening, they just didn't shoot from what I saw. This doesn't mean they're going to turn into Sunderland. And Roman wants attacking football, I'm sure he'll send the messages to Rafa.

Yeah I am a supporter. I can't really bet on it, though I'm sure, with the fans pressurizing, and Roman's wishes, I don't think this is going to be repeated. Roman has always said he wishes to create a Barcelona, with 2 goalless games, I don't think he'd be a happy man.

Based on the two last games, no way. But they are under a lot of pressure, and I could see this turning into them taking a few more chances going forward, which again could lead to Mata getting a few points.

I'm shipping Hazard, but if I had Mata I would definitely keep him for this match considering Chelsea NEED to score desperately, and hopefully this will show + he was rested midweek.

If we're gonna play the setup we're playing now, we need the central attacking midfielder to be way more attacking and actually work together with Torres instead of both pissing about. Who that will be remains to be seen though, but I think Hazard is the most obvious option to play "second striker".

    Fellaini(city), Berbs(SPURS), Sess(nor), Stirling(SOT)?

On fixtures, you'd say Fell but he's awesome. Still, Arsenal kept him out pretty well apart from Ramsey squaring it to him to score and you guess City won't make that mistake. Stirling has the best fixture but I've got Enrique and Suarez.

Not sure about Sterling as a 5th mid anymore.

I have Morrison as my 4th, and it's giving me a benching problem.

What do you think about Morrison -> Puncheon to raise funds, and keep Baines?

Sound, unless Baines is out for a longer period of time.

SSN - If they didn't have RVP's goals and assists they'd be 12th

Wonder why people come up with stats like this? Its pointless, clubs don't pay big bucks for players for nothing you know. Well except Torres but you know what I am getting at.

Most ridiculous stat that is used all too often at the moment. Tells you absolutely eff all about anything. Of course you'll be lower in the table if you can only use 10 of your players. Lazy, rubbish journalism.

Yeah but if every other team didn't have their main strikers goals or assists they'd all be lots lower too. Making 12th something like - 3rd.

If Chelsea didn't have Petr Cech this season they would be 20th.

      Stats like this are ridiculous.

If they didn't have RVP, someone else would have played each game and could have scored/assisted as many/less/more than he has.

We don't know how Welbeck or Hernandez or Young or whoever would have done, its not as if they would have played with 10.
