Fantasy Premier League Focus

Our weekly look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game arrives a little later than usual this time. The rundown of the Scout League standings sees three of the overall top four lead the way, while we assess the transfer market, where the arrival of Rafa Benitez has had a significant effect already…

Scout League Standings

We’ve a two-way points tie at the top of the Scout League after Gameweek 14. Iyad Zahlan returns to the summit by virtue of the fact that he had made less trades than his rival before the midweek deadline. Iyad racked up 53 points during the week, mainly thanks to goals from captain Robin Van Persie, Gareth Bale and Michu, while Carlos Cuellar shipped in with a clean sheet. He now sits on 897 points, second in the overall rankings and just three points off the leader.

Brad Conlin sits in second spot on 897 points and third in the overall rankings, despite taking a four point hit. His decision to name Theo Walcott as his vice-captain came in handy when Carlos Tevez warmed the bench for City at Wigan, while Bale and Rickie Lambert also found the net.

T.I. is a non-mover in third spot after picking up 58 points in the previous round. He also chose to captain Van Persie, while Bale and Cuellar were joined by Ryan Nelsen in picking up the points. T.I. sits in fourth in the overall rankings on 892 points.

David Jones moved up to fourth after accruing 50 points in Gameweek 14. Captain Wayne Rooney let him down, though Michu, Bale, Marouane Fellaini and Rafael helped boost his overall tally to 876 points, enough to earn him 20th spot overall.

Paul Rowland completes our top five after a 61 point haul in midweek. Intriguingly, his approach is entirely different from our previous quartet – he doubled up on the Chelsea and United defences, while Michu was handed the armband and Fellaini also produced.

The performance of our top five have ensured Fantasy Football Scout stays top of the Best Leagues – an average of 886.8 is 23.6 points ahead of our nearest challenger.

In the contributors league, Facer keeps his place at the top. Bale, Fellaini, Rafael, Michu and captain Van Persie helped him to 63 points in midweek.

Market Trends

A quick turnaround in Gameweeks has afforded less time for the bandwagons to get into full gear, though Gareth Bale’s goal and assist against Liverpool have earned the Spurs winger over 56,000 new owners. Marouane Fellaini is a distant second behind the Welshman – over 39,000 Fantasy managers have drafted in the Everton midfielder after he produced his third set of double figures in his last four appearances in midweek.

Faith in Liverpool’s Fantasy assets is on the rise ahead of a strong schedule. Luis Suarez (35,000), Jose Enrique (28,000) and Raheem Sterling (16,000) have proven popular since Tuesday evening’s deadline passed. Swansea’s display against West Brom has earned Wayne Routledge and Michu plenty new suitors – a combined 39,000 have snapped up Michael Laudrup’s midfield pair.

Arsenal’s kind upcoming run of games has prompted investment in Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla – the pair have attracted over 28,000 transfers in between them, while a combined 24,000 have snapped up West Brom duo James Morrison and Shane Long ahead of three home games in four.

Between the posts, John Ruddy’s injury and subsequent three month absence has seen Asmir Begovic, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Brad Guzan all transferred in by 11,000+ Fantasy managers. Chelsea’s record of back-to-back clean sheets under Rafa Benitez has seen Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole reappear on Fantasy radars – a total of 22,000 have drafted in the pair, while Norwich’s cut-price appeal has seen Javier Garrido (16,000) and Seb Bassong (13,000) continue to rack up new owners. Ryan Shawcross, Per Mertesacker and Matija Nastasic are all on Fantasy radars approaching tomorrow’s deadline.

The Benitez effect has had an adverse effect of Chelsea’s attacking assets, with the midfield exodus gathering pace. Juan Mata is the most transferred out player in the Gameweek, with over 41,000 parting company with the Spaniard – Eden Hazard isn’t far behind, with 33,000 trades out.

Leighton Baines’ possible hamstring absence has resulted in 39,000 sales of the Everton left-back, with many making a move for Jose Enrique to free up budget. Carlos Tevez’s failure to appear in the first XI for City’s last two has persuaded 36,000 to part company with the Argentine.

Kevin Nolan, Yaya Toure and Hatem Ben Arfa have been moved on by over 15,000 Fantasy managers as midfields get refreshed, while somewhat surprisingly, Dimitar Berbatov has been sold on by over 17,000, despite four home games in the next six.

So if you have Baines, and you have no Liverpool or City defensive coverage... the generally accepted transfer is Baines>JEnrique right?

Any merit in going for G Johnson instead?

    LIVERPOOL!
    The talk on here seems to be all about Enrique and Suarez, with obvious reasons, but there are 2 things I don't really understand here;
    1. The negative reception to teams with the "Liverpool trio" - Sterling, Enrique and Suarez. Yes, it is 3 Liverpool players, but look at them individually. Enrique is a reasonably priced defender in a solid team, playing in a front 3! Sure he isn't the greatest finisher, but he has had what? 2 games at LW? He's only going to get better. His positioning and movement at points in the Tottenham game was fantasic and he had 2 great opportunities to score.
Suarez is the top scorer in the PL to date, he's 6 points off RVP (due to the PPI system) 14 weeks in, and is 3-4M cheaper. With SOT whm AVL FUL stk qpr SUN mun NOR all the way up until GW23 you'd be mental not to at least consider him, especially given he is a reasonable price in comparison to Rooney, Aguero, and even RVP.
Sterling is cheap bench fodder for most. Majority purchased for 4.5-4.9 and rarely plays. He has only well in 2 games, with two 5 pointers, but he is better than anyone else in the price range bar maybe Puncheon, who's gametime is still questionable.
However, this leads to the next part I am confused about: people buying Sterling and/or Enrique purely to "not have to have Suarez"...silly. Comparing to Enrique is difficult as he has only been playing up front for a few weeks, but looking at Sterling. Sterling has scored 3 points or less in 9 out of 13 games, with two 5 pointers. Barring the Wigan and Reading game he has 2.6 points per game. Yes, it's stupid to dismiss his two 11 pointers, but the point I am making is he is in no way a Suarez replacement or alternative, who has 10 goals and 3 assists already. People not buying Suarez because they have 1-2 Liverpool players are mental. Compare him to the other strikers you can get and it's a no-brainer. Suarez, IMO, is second to only RVP..and even that is arguable, and given the prices there is not one striker I would want over Suarez. He, like Gareth Bale, is a good point scorer but most crucially over the festive period will give you 90 minutes every week, which will be absolutely golden. City strikers, Giroud, Defoe, Fletcher or whoever you have as your strikers don't even come close IMO.

    RANT OVER!!!

This is going to be a massive comment, I think, probably 2 pages have gone by since I started typing as well 😆

He's talking about value for positions though, which is absolutely nothing to do with putting your eggs in one basket at all.

An oop defender who plays MF and will get 4 pts instead of 1 for a cleanie and 6 pts for a goal plus the most rotation proof striker in the league, plus a decent cheap bench warmer who plays in support of the striker is what I would consider excellent use of your budget.

Personally, I'd just have Jenny and Suarez but I can understand having an England player at less than £5.5m on your bench most weeks.

Of course, but that is like anybody who has more than 1 player from any team, no? 2 Liverpool players in my 11 for SOT whm AVL FUL and then probably the following fixtures seems a good bet to me. Defence and attack are 2 very different things in FPL.

and it's not as if I am forking out alot of money for them. It's not like going with RVP + Rooney + Valencia, triple United attack for a third of your team's balance. A 1-0 win with a Suarez goal would get me 15 points from my two players. 0-1 and it's just two 2 pointers.

Also, the fact that Sterling is most peopls 5th mid, therefore 8th attacker, means really you are playing two Liverpool players. Defender and attacker. Plenty have had Demel/Nolan, Rafael/RVP, Ivanovic/Mata, Baines/Fellaini..last season there was Caulker/Sigurdsson, Evans/Rooney/Valencia..the list goes on.

i have been debating this point exactly in my head, when you see 3 lpool players in squad it looks bad, but at moment suarez is a must and enrique is close to being that also with his price and position. The fact i already have sterling should be irrelevant in the fact i would drop him most weeks anyway, and have more likelyhood now that i have lpool cover in harder matches.
Plus we are only a few weeks away from WC so if it doesnt work it doesnt need massive repairs.

I think this is tipping me over the edge in terms of Baines & Tevez > Enrique & Suarez. No doubt I want them both, just don't want to lose Baines.

Let's hope he continues impressing but not picking up FPL points as I'll be absolutely gutted if he does, especially after all that time spent analysing his performances and urging people to hold on for the inevitable explosion!

Suprisingly though I have had Sterling since GW4 (at 4.5) and has played more often than I originally wanted (injuries A Johnson, Ramirez etc) but his PPG is great for me.

        GW4 5
        GW5 2
        GW6 5
        GW7 3
        GW8 11

        GW10 2
        GW11 -
        GW12 11
        GW13 3
        GW14 -

Going ahead I am rotating him with Puncheon to give me

SOU, REA, AVL, FUL for the next 4.

After that will be looking to probably bump possibly Sterling depending on his performance during that time.

I'm hovering over the confirm button on these two free transfers:

      Baines & Wilko > Enrique & Nasty

I am trebling up on Pool for their upcoming sweet run of fixtures. I realise this is a massive risk, but I just feel that if Pool can hit form during this run (and their best results have unsurprisingly come against the lower teams) then I could go shooting up the rankings. Probably not the best time to buy Nasty either but City just keep churning out those cleanies.

Basically what I'm asking is which 2 from the following:
      A) Enrique
      B) Nasty
      C) JEvans
      D) Ridgewell (tasty fixtures but can bring in for Cuellar after DGW)

current defence is Baines, Rafa, Huth, Clyne and Shorey. Was planning on shipping Clyne due to his forthcoming blank and the fact that is Baines is out I will have to get one of Clyne (liv) or Shorey (MNU) off my bench, whereas if I sold Clyne, Huth could come in.
