Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

The appointment of Rafael Benitez as Chelsea manager on November 21 was one of those heart-sinking moments Fantasy managers experience each season. Suddenly a solid offensive unit of nailed-on stars was to be managed by a man known more for squad rotation and defensive strategy than attacking swagger.

For Juan Mata owners, it was a devastating blow. Between Gameweek 5 and Gameweek 12, which proved to be Roberto Di Matteo’s last match in charge, the Spanish midfielder had racked up 60 points during a superb run that included four goals, six assists and eight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points. Averaging 8.5 FPL points per game during that above-mentioned period, it seemed the last thing Mata needed was Benitez in charge.

At the start of Benitez’s tenure, Mata owners’ fears were proved right. Not only did Gameweek 13 see Chelsea shuffle their way through a drab 0-0 draw with Man City, in Gameweek 14 the former Valencia man fell victim to his countrymen’s famous rotation policy and started on the bench. Mata did manage to accrue 28 minutes at home to Fulham that day but after the resultant goalless draw, Fantasy managers could be forgiven for tossing in the towel and waving goodbye to the points potential of Chelsea’s attacking assets.

Further sorrow was to follow in Gameweek 15 when West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 at Upton Park. The game did at least prove comforting for Mata owners, with the Spaniard starting and scoring his side’s only goal. As the team get used to their new manager’s focus on defence and a more rigorous fitness regime in training, though, they have gradually built up the confidence to attack. In Gameweek 16 Chelsea quite simply humbled Sunderland, with Mata once again getting on the scoresheet, as two more FPL bonus points took his total bonus tally to 10 for the season.

Two Premier League starts in a row and a pair of goals in as many games is as good a sign there is that, after an initial slump, Mata could be a key attacking asset during the Benitez era. Chelsea’s December 5 Champions League clash with Nordsjaelland saw the London outfit winning 6-1 and added further fuel to the assertion that Mata is back as a key Fantasy asset – a goal and a trio of assists was a truly mouth-watering score, if converted into FPL or Sky Sports points.

Disappointment was to follow in the World Club Championship final earlier this month where Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Brazilian side Corinthians, but there is still enough evidence in recent weeks to convince us that Mata is a deserved riser in our Watchlist. A goal and assist in last night’s Capital One Cup rout at Leeds was accompanied by a man of the match award as Mata’s fine form under his compatriot continued.

As Fantasy managers scour the market in order to replace the suspended Marouane Fellaini, Mata looks an enticing proposition. While other premium priced options such as Gareth Bale sit on four yellows, one away from a booking, Santi Cazorla is set for a blank Gameweek 19 after Arsenal’s Boxing Day clash with West Ham was postponed. Over 44,000 FPL managers have snapped Mata up this week – a clear sign that faith in his potential for points is on the rise again. Fixtures for Chelsea are mixed over the festive period (AVL, nor, eve, QPR) but the promise is there for Mata to add to his six goals and six assists for the season – those two home games with Villa and QPR look like particular Christmas crackers for the diminutive midfield schemer.

Regarding price, Mata still offers value in the FPL and Sky Sports game. While his cost remains at 8.9 in the latter game, Mata’s slow start to the season, caused by injury and fatigue, saw his FPL price plummet from a starting valuation of 9.5 to 8.8 in Gameweek 6. He’s been mainly rising since and is now once again back to his initial valuation of 9.5; not bad for a player who racked up 163 points, six goals and an incredible 16 assists in his top-flight debut last time round.

The only real downside is Benitez’s penchant for rotation. Last night’s game with Leeds was Chelsea’s eight in 24 days and with the likes of Victor Moses, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marko Marin and even Ramires vying for berths in the attacking midfield three, the new man in charge has options aplenty should he choose to freshen up his starting XI over the hectic Christmas schedule. Of that group, Mata and Hazard look the most nailed on, though, and with Benitez keen to win over the Blues support, he can perhaps ill-afford to overlook his compatriot’s stunning form as the Blues look to get their faltering title bid back on track.

Giving the City players some consideration though. I have Tevez and Silva. The former is too much of a rotation risk, but Silva is a good prospect. Would you captain him over Suarez?

Looks that way, Liverpool are at home, Suarez will be involved in everything. Even if UTD score 2 with how they attack no guarantee RVP will be involved.

What do I need to do to this team for this GW?

    Jussi
    Simpson Cameron Ridgewell(inj)
    MIchu Sess Walcott Silva(c)
    Holt RVP Suarez

    Subs; Beg, Sterling, Baines, Nelsen

I already used my FT for Walcott to replace Fellaini

I want to take an 8-point hit just to bring in Mata (Baines >> Clark, Sess >> Mata).

Not decided on my final captain pick yet, but its a straight fight between Silva and RVP.

Torres I had for his early dgw. Unless that happens again, no thanks. Rvp takes up a slot, felli, nolan, santi also. If walcott is fit I might get him as well. The things is my wc team for 22 is not different from what I have now... 😕

He used to be a very hot property on here. One of those boutique bandwagons that roll around every now and then. But he hasn't done enough to deserve it in my opinion. 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 weeks since coming back from injury.

OK Thanks all. I will take another look at Puncheon. But considering Ramirez, 7 games with only 1 goal and 1 assist looks poor, but he is new to UK, and shortly after returning from injury after 3 weeks, and it should have been 6 weeks, he rushes back to Uruguay due to family bereavement.

Nothing between Mata/Silva/Santi long term, they're like clones of each other the way they play ...it's more down to the teams form around them and fixtures...Right now it's Mata on top marginally on form and Silva marginally on fixtures but that could change in a fortnights time...

Is it such a big risk to captain Silva against Reading?

Last couple of games he's been very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. If not against Reading, he should never be captain material, then why spend 9.4 on such a player?

What do we think? Stick or bust this week as captain?

Not what I'm saying. My point at 9.4m he should be captain material, and if not against Reading at home, surely better points can be gained elsewhere with the money.

Captain Material isn't about consistency (RVP is the exception to the rule), it's about the possibility for explosive points. At his best from, Silva is really consistent and rarely explosive but totally worth the price tag.

But Silva hasn't been at his best FPL wise this season at all. A constant stream of an assist or two in each match (maybe a goal once every 5 games or so) is much better for a player of his style than one big score and an inconsistent gathering of points.

Most, I presume are doing it to cover the city attacking and hoping their strikers can take the chances created by Silva..

not really. fancy him to get 6-9. just don't expect any bonus as odds are other players will score the goals in a rout

I don't feel massively comfortable doing it, but it seems to be the sort of game - if there ever is one - where he could do very well. I'm thinking along the lines of the 5-0 vs Villa earlier this season: 1 goal, 2 assists, 2 bonus.

The flip side is, that's the only game this season where you'd have been truly happy with his as your captain.

i know man, i got him in the week he got suspended for a 4pt hit, but the man is in a class of his own, he makes chances and seems to be unlucky a lot of the time, but that only lasts for so long, especially against a poor fulham defence

I'm not Granville, but I've brought him in due to City's lack of mids atm and how high up the field he tends to be getting for crosses, corners, etc.

    A couple of questions peeps...

Firstly are people looking to keep hold of Rafael? Looking to get Silva in for Fellaini and need to free up some funds. Would mean me replacing Raf with a 4.5 type underwhelmer.

Secondly, read a BBC report about Benitez looking to play Luiz in midfield. What do we think, worth a punt? In both the Japan World Cup thingy and Leeds last night he played some right through balls, FIFA style.

    Thanks,

Some discussion at the top of the page. Bear in mind this is Jan WC

      Gazzaniga – Begovic
      Clichy – Vertonghen – Cameron – Davies – Demel
      Mata – Puncheon – Bale – Fellaini – Michu
Van Persie – Suarez – Torres

I'm actually 0.2 off this right now but hopeful that price changes from Fellaini and others will allow it.

      What think you?

You're planning your January WC already? When you planning to hit the trigger? I'm probably going to wait until as late as possible. Have you scouted defensive rotations?

I'm not sure about Clichy - I'd gamble that Nasty is better value. Vertongen is also a solid pick and could be the slightly poorer man's Vermaelen this year. The rest is pretty solid as well.

As for your attack, I'm not sure I like Torres but if you think his revival is for real then go for it. He's such a strange striker in that he's either on fire or playing crappy. I think he thrives on confidence and Rafa seems to know what to do with him.

I noticed someone up top said "no City attacking cover" as a huge mistake, but I'm really not convinced that it's essential. I'd love to own a City attacker who is involved in a lot of their goals but they just seem to get shared around too much for my liking.

By playing crappy, I mean FPL-wise, i.e. not scoring goals

Yeah. I am aware that a lot will change. I think my plan is post-DGW so I can offload Arsenal.

Clichy is a funny one. I don't understand why he gets passed over when discussing City defence. He has started 10 of the last 11 he's been fit for.

On Torres, you're right about the confidence and Rafa. I'm banking on that right now but I've got 5-6 games to find out if he sustains it. Unfortunately, if he does he might be out of my price-range by then!

I looked briefly into defensive rotations but the options are slim when you need two 4.0m-ers.

For the same price as Clichy you can get Nasty, who many would argue is more secure in the team. We all know how Mancini likes to rotate though!

I'm planning to WC as late as possible but I won't hold out if I really need to use it earlier.

Silva is a solid player but there are some really decent elite midfield options this year so it's hard to find a space for him.
