Spot the Differential – Gameweek 18

Another packed Friday comes to an end as we brace ourselves for the frantic festive schedule. Once more, we roll out a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of Saturday morning’s deadline…

Ashley Young

It’s something of an understatement to say Ashley Young didn’t have the best of starts to the current campaign. A single assist in eight appearances over the first 14 Gameweeks was indicative of his disappointing displays for United, as the former Villa man failed to give any indication he was worthy of our attentions.

Indeed, from a Fantasy perspective, United’s midfield has been hugely frustrating. The league leaders may have scored 10 more goals than any other side yet their top scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielder is Michael Carrick, with 40 points – three more United defenders have exceeded that score, despite the Red Devils managing a mere three clean sheets. It’s been all about Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney for Sir Alex Ferguson’s table-toppers so far but Young has crept onto our radars after registering an assist in each of his last three Gameweeks and offers an alternative route into Ferguson’s flourishing attack.

The Red Devils roll up to Swansea, having scored three or more goals in five of their last six on the road and priced at 8.2 in FPL and 8.3 in the Sky Sports game, with an ownership of less than 2% in both games, Young could be one to consider for those Fantasy managers still deliberating over a replacement for the suspended Marouane Fellaini.

Edin Dzeko

The City forward may not be too enamoured with his “supersub” tag but, unfortunately for Dzeko, it’s one that his displays have merited. Four of the Bosnian’s six goals this season have come after he climbed off the bench, compared to two strikes in five starts – a crucial factor in his selection for this Gameweek’s article.

Earlier today, Roberto Mancini spoke of his intentions to rotate his team across the festive period as the champions brace themselves for four fixtures in 10 days. With Mario Balotelli ruled out through illness and perhaps uncertain to feature on Boxing Day, the City boss is likely to be careful with the game time of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Dzeko against Reading tomorrow – the chances are that even if the latter doesn’t start the game, he should see some action.

Bearing in mind the Royals have shipped 13 goals in their last four, the potential for Fantasy points is enticing for the hosts. Dzeko needed only five minutes’ game time to score against Fulham in Gameweek 6, just 12 minutes to bag a brace against West Brom in Gameweek 8 and 18 minutes to notch at home to Spurs in Gameweek 11 – even if Mancini starts with the Argentine pair, then, Dzeko could still prosper if let loose for half an hour or so. Coming in at just 7.3 in FPL and 8.3 in the Sky Sports game, Dzeko’s mid-price FPL valuation and ability to produce from the bench means it would be far less of a blow if Mancini chooses to omit him from the City starting XI.

Victor Moses

Another winger who has failed to produce this term, although the arrival of Rafa Benitez seems to have boosted Moses’ chances. The former Wigan man was rarely afforded an opportunity under Roberto Di Matteo but has started the last two league games at the expense of Oscar in the attacking midfield three behind Fernando Torres.

Handed another chance to impress in the midweek Capital One Cup trip to Leeds, he duly delivered with a goal and assist to vindicate his new manager’s faith. As the fixtures pick up pace, Moses perhaps has the advantage of being a little fresher than many of his team mates – with just four league starts all season, fatigue certainly won’t be an issue. With the Blues looking to continue their recent goalscoring form as Villa pay visit on Sunday, Moses – at just 6.2 in FPL and 6.9 in the Sky Sports game, and with an ownership of around 2% in both games, is a definite gamble but one that could pay off if Benitez keeps faith in his abilities over the festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Great choice. I am bringing him in despite the tube strike. Wigan's defensive issues could see him go nuts.

    My 5 planned trades up to the Jan W/C (after GW23)....

    Enrique, Sess, Taarabt, Silva & Suarez -> Gibbs, Cazorla, Bale, Nolan & Berba.

    No hits and gives me 6 DGWers. Now just to sort out the order of doing them. Overall, good trades?

    All look good, but I might be a little hesitant about the Nolan trade. I had him for a while and I just traded him the other week, he just didn't seem like a reliable player for me, but his fixtures are getting significantly better, so it could be a good move.

      Cheers. Yeah it's a bit of a DGW gamble, but he does at least have some decent fixtures running up to it (he's had horrible fixtures for the last 6 or so weeks). Might look at getting him for

      rea, NOR, sun, QPR/ars

        If he produces against rea or NOR then I could consider bringing him in for the DGW, but looking at his form earlier in the season it could be worth it to have him for those two fixtures. Currently my midfield is a little bit of a mess since I have Fellani(Who I am transferring out right now), Sterling(who could be rested soon), and Guthrie(who never plays). Glad I was able to help, good luck this week!

          Just had a play with my transfers, and I think I'd only get Nolan in for the DGW in GW23 before I WC in GW24, so it'd be a one week punt. Current plan is:

          GW19: Suarez -> Berba
          GW20: Sess -> Cazorla
          GW21: Silva -> Bale
          GW22: Save
          GW23: Hughes & Yaya -> Vermaelen/Gibbs & Nolan, or Yaya & Berba -> Nolan & Tevez

            That looks like it would work out really well for you, and then if Nolan does a nice job in the double gameweek you could even keep him after the wildcard. I think that looks like a good plan.

    You have to assume City will want their strongest side at Sunderland and Norwich so this is his real opportunity to rest the big guns? Could be one of those where everyone is on the bench and Milner, Sinclair, Dzeko start?

        Ultimately one of Kun/Tevez will have to start. City's squad actually looks a but thin this week. Adam Johnson would have been a safe pick a year ago. Not too sure Sinclair is though.

      Actually, there are 15 fit regular City outfield players atm:

      Kompany
      Toure
      Nastasic
      Lesscott
      Zabaleta
      Maicon
      Clichy
      Yaya
      Barry
      Garcia
      Milner
      Silva
      Tevez
      Aguero
      Dzeko

      Therefore five of the above will not start. Kompany declared fit and Kolarov ruled out, correct??

          with kompany hurt nasty will play. but once kompany comes back lescott will get a run out for at least one of the games, most likely the norwich game. but then again this is mancini we're trying to predict. so the opposite will most likely be true.

          bale isnt going to get much time against stoke because AVB is notorious for bringing players back in slowly after an injury. This will be true especially for a player like bale whose essential for the team and another injury for him will be a disaster.

          so yea good move. bring bale back for villa game.

    I have this feeling that mancini is trolling this site reading all the predictions we make about his lineup. Then he does the opposite so his fantasy team does better than most on here. only explanation i can cook up for robo man's mind-boggling team selection.

    Out of these five, who is the best captain option?
    Van Persie, Mata, Defoe, Bale, or Tevez?
    Tevez is a good option, but he isn't guranteed to start. Defoe and Bale are good but they are up against Stoke who have been good with defense lately. That would leave Mata and Van Persie, and it looks the obvious choice would be Van Persie, but would it be crazy to captain Mata instead?

          I'm expecting a 3-2 scoreline at the Bridge. Villa have been scoring a lot of goals with the new formation and I think Mata will deliver.

        Aston Villa have only conceded twice in their last five gameweeks I think, and even though they were playing easier teams I feel like Mata could have a little bit of trouble? Also, since a lot of people are captaining Van Persie and I expect Van Persie will get at least a goal or assist, it may be best to captain Van Persie and take the safest route.

      On paper, Tevez. The only worry is the rotation. Fkn Mancini. Pretty much all my nearest rivals have Tevez though, so not captaining him would making watching him start seriously stressful.

        I feel like Tevez and Van Persie will be the most popular captain choices this week, and it is obvious that the latter is the safer of the two. I just want to make the best captain choice possible, and Mata has a good chance to do well this week. However, it is safer to do Van Persie... I don't know what to do.
