The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      If you get news that Demel isn't going to play, you should definitely get someone in for him, because you;re spending a transfer to be 95% sure of getting some more points, which you can't say very often.

    My team at the moment is below. I've already done my free transfer for the gameweek (Bale in, obviously) but am just wondering if there's any other transfers I might consider? A hit or two is not a concern as, with bonuses, I now have about a fifty point lead in the only mini league I care about (the only one with money at stake!). £0.3m to play with. Fire away.

    Begovic, Jaaskelainen
    Cuellar, Sagna, Nastasic, Demel, Vertonghen
    Bale, Maloney, Mata, Michu, Puncheon

      Little wrong with that. Pick when you're doing a wildcard (I guess that post West Ham Arsenal will be a good time for you), then check the defensive rotation and see if you can get there without playing Gorks.

      f you can, great for you and some nice luck; if you can't, get someone else in, probably a West Ham player who isn't Demel for the double gameweek.

    The bonus points are still f*$cked.

    Fair enough Evans scored a goal but was in a defence that conceded 3, he got booked and scored an own goal. Surely the own goal cancels out the other goal?

    And I'm not being bitter about RVP(c) with no BPs. I just don't understand how Carrick was not recognised and Evans and Hernandez got BPs.

        I don't know. I like the transparency of the new system and the BPs do move around a lot more so I am still in favour of it but it does need tweaked so that SoT aren't so important. I personally thought Hernandez was balls yesterday apart from his glorious winner which was all about Carrickinho.

    I can't see Aguero rekindling his form of old, so I'm thinking of doing

    I HAVE GONE THROUGH IN THE CUP. Yeahhhhh!!!!!

    But next week i have a bit of a problem with Shawcross & Michu out.

    So, the team looks fairly well set up for this week. I guess that having Michu in the team with Sterling on the bench is a perfectly reasnoble option for this week, as we can expect Sterling to start now. He was only left out because they got a 4-0 without him.

    Two city players in my team.
    Clichy and Silva.
    while silva is delivering the occasional assist, Clichy isnt playing at all.hamstring injury and unknown return date.
    so
    should i do clichy to gibbs. or silva to santi/walcott ?

      I'm doing Silva -> Cazorla myself this week, but looking at your team you need rid of Clichy first as you will probably only have two defenders this week

    Impressive Tackle and others interested in BAPS,
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/09/25/vidic-blow-for-united/comment-page-3/#comment-3986182

    Corrections BAP Chap told me about

    Shots on target and off are Shots on target and off target +- 4
    Clean sheets are not so much. Defenders get in a lot of blocks tackles.

    The reasons for BAPS are always give in the Scout section on the FPL site. Monitor that.

        Massive score Evs, and you're most welcome. I expect a mention in your interview when you finish the season as #1. 😉

      Thanks dude.

      I am familiar with a lot of this, but just because it is transparent doesn't mean it's right.

      What is in place to recognise the input of players like Carrick? He's had 2 BPs (2 x 1) this season despite playing nearly every minute of every game. He had two match-winning assists yesterday and still couldn't get in the BPs.

    Is Caz worth the 1.1 over Walcott?

    Want to have at least one of them dor the DGW

    Hi guys, would really appreciate some help with my team. "Risks" in caps:

    Begovic
    Cuellar, Luiz, SHOREY
    Snodgrass, Bale, MICHU, STERLING, Young
    Van Persie, Tevez

    Jussi, DEMEL, ROONEY(OUT), CAMERON(OUT)

    A) Rooney -> Defoe/Hernandez
    B) Rooney & Shorey -> Defoe/Hernandez & Evra/Skrtel/Gibbs/Enrique (-4)
    C) Rooney & Sterling/Snodgrass -> Defoe/Hernandez & Cazorla/Walcott (-4)
    D) Rooney, Sterling/Snodgrass & Shorey -> Hernandez, Cazorla/Walcott & Skrtel/Gibbs/Enrique (-8)
    E) Something else?

    Rooney & Shorey need to go, do i need to get an Arsenal player yet or should i just leave enough funds to upgrade Sterling/Snodgrass to Walcott/Cazorla?

    cheers!
