The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Wednesday

Rafa’s weakened lineup get turned over by Harry’s boys as Shaun Wright-Phillips returns to haunt the Stamford Bridge regulars. There’s no such shock at Anfield as Luis Suarez fills his boots again, whilst Leighton Baines’ wonder strike inspires an Everton win at St James’ Park…

On the Up

Luis Suarez
Seemingly everpresent in this article in over recent Gameweeks, Suarez once again delivered the goods for Liverpool, chipping in with his fourth and fifth goals in the last four league matches, whilst providing the assist for Raheem Sterling’s opener. Scoring back-to-back braces for the first time in his Liverpool career, his stock remain buoyant, his ownership and price on the climb. While Suarez has United and Arsenal in the next three, his form is so strong, that’s unlikely to be a factor that will perturb investors.

Steven Gerrard
The skipper goes on delivering: his pair of assists tonight means that Gerrard has now returned in his last six outings. Slowly but surely, Fantasy managers are waking up to his consistency – Gerrard’s ownership is steadily on the rise and his price has climbed to 9.4. Suarez, for just 0.9 more, remains the stronger option by some margin, however.

Raheem Sterling
The 18-year-old operates in a different price bracket to the Liverpool heavy-hitters and, with his opening goal tonight, he delivered his first strike since Gameweek 8. Before this evening’s game, Sterling had just a single assist in his last nine league appearances – form that was beginning to call his value, even at 5.6, into question. They’ll be no such doubts for a while, despite the arrival of Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool Defence
A third clean sheet in four games brought Brendan Rodgers’ defence to the fore and with Andre Wisdom back in the side, Fantasy managers will certainly be taking note. The young full-back would surely only be a short-term option with Jose Enrique sidelined and with United and Arsenal to come, the “wisdom” of such a move seems limited.

Leighton Baines
A stunning thirty-yard free-kick brought Baines’ owners their first major returns since Gameweek 5. Before tonight, the Everton left-back had delivered just two assists in 13 league outings. While the clean sheet was again off the menu, Baines’ strike offered a timely reminder of his qualities ahead of a Gameweek 22 home meeting with Swansea.

Marouane Felliani
There was talk before the game that the Belgian could be dropped back to a deeper role with Darron Gibson sidelined but, with David Moyes drafting in Phil Neville and dropping Victor Anichebe, it’s clear that Fellaini is set for the long-haul in an advanced role. He hardly dazzled but his physical presence played its part, earning the free-kick which was converted by Baines to give Felliani immediate assist returns.

Papiss Cisse
While Demba Ba negotiates his way out of St James’ Park, Cisse is trying to reinstate himself as Newcastle’s hitman. His opening strike tonight was his second in three matches and, with Alan Pardew suggesting prior to the match that Cisse will eventually lead the attack back in a central role, he is gradually coming in from the cold as a Fantasy option.

The QPR Defence
Nobody would have backed the R’s defence for a shutout at Stamford Bridge having witnessed Luis Suarez tear them apart last time out. Rafa’s teamsheet may have played its part in helping Harry Redknapp motivate his side and that factor shouldn’t be underestimated. While Harry will surely bring in plenty of new blood, the likes of Ryan Nelsen may remain a mainstay and could provide strong value if Redknapp can go on inspiring similar performances.

Going Down

Rafa Benitez
It would be harsh to dent the stock of the players involved when it’s Rafa’s rotation policy that is to blame. Tonight’s decision to rest all three of the players who supported Fernando Torres at Goodison came as a shock – it’s the first time Chelsea have started a league game this season without both Eden Hazard or Juan Mata. With Ashley Cole also preserved, it’s become clear that nobody is safe from an occasional rest. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, but that fails to sweeten the pill and introduces an unwelcome variable when considering Chelsea assets. You have to wonder, however, having suffered a shock defeat, whether Rafa will think again when it comes to underestimating opponents with his team selection.

Fernando Torres
The Spaniard survived Rafa’s rotation cull to lead the attack but drew a blank for the third successive league outing. With Demba Ba in talks and Benitez hinting that a rest for Torres is in his plans, those still clinging to El Nino will surely be fidgeting and considering their options.

Demba Ba
His absence from Newcatle’s lineup came as an immediate blow to his Fantasy owners – his pending move to Chelsea may dent his stock further. Having witnessed Rafa’s rotation policy at work tonight, few will relish the prospects of Ba being part of that, regardless of the prospect of improved service.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    (REPOST FOR THE DZ)

    ATTENTION DEMBA BA OWNERS!

    Ba exit options (revised):

    1) Carlos Tevez (9.0) - bargain if he gets PT; hinges on the extent of Aguero's injury; Mancini rotation is worrying; however I believe that he will be vital to City's title challenge during the 2nd half of the season

    2) Emmanuel Adebayor (9.0) - Doosra differential special; git

3 Papiss Cisse (8.8) - main man up front with Ba's exit; would be the most appealing option if Newcastle were firing and Barfa/Cabaye/Jonas were all healthy

    4) Jermain Defoe (8.5) - great season so far and no. 1 striker for Spurs; however most people won't want to double up with him and Bale

    5) Lukas Podolski (8.2) - nailed-on at LW for Arsenal but often gets subbed off early; DGW coming

    6) Nikica Jelavic (8.1) - disappointing season but has looked threatening during the last few games; best upcoming fixtures out of everyone on the list

    7) Olivier Giroud (7.8) - starts not guaranteed unless Theo moves back to the wing; DGW option as well; handsome motherfecker

    8) Edin Dzeko (7.3) - also hinges on the extent of Aguero's injury; rounding into form but prone to Mancini rotation as well; Balotelli's return imminent

    8) Dimitar Berbatov (7.1) - Ruiz is back; on pens and a few direct FKs; sexy motherfecker

    9) Steven Fletcher (7.0) - his role as Sunderland's only option up top is appealing; however
    Sunderland suffering from inconsistency

    10) Javier Hernandez (7.3) - good short-term option but only while Rooney is out; Welbeck and Kagawa are threats to his PT

    11) Christian Benteke (6.7) - massive potential but highly unreliable; upside is that he's on pens

    12) Shane Long/Peter Odemwingie/Romelu Lukaku - Steve Clarke rotation is a headache

    MAKE YOUR PICK.

If I keep Michu, I'm planning to bench him for gw's 22, 24 and 27.

    My choices are
    a) sagna, michu, ruiz

Just one last thing on the budget defence for anyone considering it.

There is a lot of guys in that bracket (3.8-4.5)

Enough to allow you to play about with options for the remainder of the season. There is room for manoeuvring within the confined price bracket that has been set. With perhaps the chance to upgrade to 5.0-5.5m defenders if you felt like it later on.

The ceiling is low but there are enough options to always have replacements on hand. You would just need the discipline to forego the expensive route in favour of a solid rotatable quintet. And with a bit of luck it might average out similar to having an ultra expensive backline.

Berba is good value for sure but he also has that tendency to be quiet for long periods if he feels like it. He's also so slow and leisurely that players like Aguero/Suarez seem about 1 million percent more likely to frighten a defence than strolling Dimitar 🙂

Nevertheless...while people are saying the 3-5-2 idea might have wheels...these kind of gameweeks are why it's worth owning reliable strikers.

        RVP - 16
        Suarez - 16
        Aguero - 11

Take your pick at captaincy! 🙂 The thing Aguero has too is penalties

Did you see the Wbrom - Ful game? Wbrom players were frightened to tackle Dimistar. He slowed down the game on purpose once Fulham were leading and admirabely so.

Looking at the above mentioned strikeforce myself. Not going to think about the wildcard team until after the DGW.

Yeah I watched the game. Dimitar is great at holding it up and keeping the ball, really impressive when he does it. Seems so calm. And the slow pace can be beneficial but the Suarez/Aguero energy/pace is truly terrifying and there's simply nothing to be done about it. That was my only point really. Can forgive Berba for that though, he's 31 or something 🙂

Just realised I'm about two or three transfers behind. Is it time to wild card? or to persevere playing catchup.

    Begovic, Foster

    Gibbs, O'Brian, Cameron, Davies, Enrique(inj)
    Bale, Walcott, Fellaini, Michu, Puncheon
    RVP, Ba(chelsea), Tevez(rotation)

    0FT's
    $0

Should I WC? Enrique, Tevez and Ba all need to go. Or can I hold out

      Firstly, Happy New year Ryan!

Not the worst time to WC. Tevez might be starting the next one due to Aguero's injury and Enrique might too. For the defence, next week doesnt look too promising anyway.

I think you can just about manage to hold on. If you have 2 wc's in the backpocket, i'd consider using em.

depends on how many WH & ARSE players you have in your team..

I have Demel (cheap and many have cheap WH defender), Merte (will be out for Gibbs), Walcott (or Caz in many teams).. Podolski will come in before DGW and shipped out after.. WC before/after is out of question..

So this is my current team for next gw, would you do any changes?
Leaning towards saving the FT and have 2 for the DGW:

    Bego
    Demel Gibbs Cuellar
    Taarabt Bale (VC) Walcott Michu
    RVP (C) Aguero Suarez

    McCarthy Sterling Davies Nelsen

If Aguero is ruled out I'm likely to do Sterling - > Nolan and go 3-5-2.

    Thoughts?

I would stay away from Nolan. he has been lame for ages and even with an eye in the DGW i don't think he is worth getting in

nolan is merely consistently average... keep sterling in the squad, far more attacking threat!

I'll be wildcarding directly after DGW and Sterling isnt staying regardless, if that changes anything

Have people still got different players in their squads? Come on, it's been 21 gameweeks - surely we should all have the same 15 players by now!?

      1. Guaranteed starts.
      2. Goals & assists.
      3. 14 bonus points so far.
      4. Wigan and West Ham at home in next 3 fixtures.
      5. Very profitable partnership with Ruiz.
      6. Fulham bound to strengthen in Transfer Window.
      7. He looks like a vampire.

Im struggling to pick a starting line-up for the next gameweek... was thinking of benching De Gea, Davies, Sterling and Puncheon?

    Begovic - De Gea

    Johnson - Gibbs - Zabaleta - Baines - Davies

Walcott - Fellaini - Yaya Toure - Sterling - Puncheon

Van Persie - Suarez - Defoe

    Thoughts anyone?

I have Gibbs/Walcott and Demel/Noble. Demel is my budget defender and Noble my budget midfielder, so both solid options ahead of the double gameweek.
