Fantasy Premier League Focus

The breakneck speed of the recent festive schedule has afforded us little time to roll out many regulars but as the schedule finally begins to ease, we take a look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, analysing the goings-on at the top of the Scout League and the hectic transfer activity, as winter wildcards are activated:

Scout League Standings

T.I. reclaims top spot in the Scout League after an 80 point haul in Gameweek 21. Handing Robin Van Persie the armband earned 32 points, while Edin Dzeko, Raheem Sterling, Theo Walcott, David Silva and Leighton Baines all produced. T.I. is now up to second in the overall standings on 1348 points and, intriguingly, has already activated his winter wildcard.

Kevin Travers climbs to second after racking up 72 points last time out. He also captained Van Persie at Wigan, while Silva was joined by Dimitar Berbatov and Luis Suarez in picking up the points. Kevin is eighth in the rankings, with 1330 points accrued.

Former world number one Iyad Zahlan has recovered after a temporary festive blip. Back up to third in the Scout League, he picked up 83 points in Gameweek 21, albeit with a four point hit. A front three of Van Persie, Suarez and Berbatov delivered 40 points between them, while captain Marouane Fellaini and Joey O’Brien both produced double figure hauls. Iyad move back up the ranking to 16th overall, on 1324 points.

M.P. slips down to fourth after a 59 point Gameweek 21 haul, despite handing Van Persie the armband. Rafael, Walcott and Jason Puncheon were his other main men.

Eddie McGeever completes the top five. He sits on 1319 points, level with M.P, having returned 77 points last time out. Yet another one to captain Van Persie, he also saw Suarez, Walcott, Sterling and Fellaini chip in with attacking returns and moves to 20th overall.
The performances of our top five helped Fantasy Football Scout hold onto top spot in the Best Leagues. We are 14.8 points ahead of our nearest rival, while the FFS Members league has moved up to fourth overall.
For the contributors, Mark has hit top spot for the first time this season. Nine of his XI produced for a Gameweek 21 haul of 96 points, with captain Van Persie joined by Dzeko, Berbatov, Silva, Fellaini, Walcott, O’Brien, Glen Johnson and Ryan Nelsen – he now nestles inside the top 3,000.

Market Trends

Joey O’Brien has proven the most popular pick after his 15 point haul for West Ham against Norwich. The full-back was subbed off just prior to the Canaries scoring at Upton Park and with a goal and maximum bonus also accrued , he has earned over 71,000 new owners ahead of the Hammers’ double Gameweek 23.

Elsewhere at the back, Manchester duo Pablo Zabaleta and Patrice Evra have both earned a place in 26,000 new teams. Ian Harte’s cut-price appeal has seen over 20,000 draft in the 3.8 priced Reading left-back, while Russell Martin and Kieran Gibbs have each received over 16,000 new owners. Between the sticks, Asmir Begovic (21,000), Simon Mignolet and Adam Federici (both 17,000) have picked up plenty of attention.

Midfield reinforcements have been a priority. Marouane Fellaini (71,000) and Gareth Bale (38,000) have picked up plenty transfers in after their respective suspensions, while Theo Walcott’s new forward role has persuaded over 53,000 Fantasy managers to pick him up prior to the Gunners’ double Gameweek 23. Michu’s return from a brief ankle injury has him on the radar of over 23,000 new suitors, while 17,000 have snapped up West Ham’s Mark Noble for the double.

Up top, Luis Suarez, with back-to-back doubles, leads the way for transfers in. Over 65,000 have grabbed the in-form Liverpool forward – he is some distance ahead of Robin Van Persie (38,000) and Demba Ba (34,000), with many perhaps anticipating the latter’s move to Chelsea. Rickie Lambert has been subject to 31,000 trades in – he moved up to sixth top scoring forward over the festive spell, while Dimitar Berbatov’s return to form has persuaded over 26,000 to climb aboard the Bulgarian’s bandwagon.

In terms of transfers out, Carlos Tevez (73,000) is head and shoulders above any other player. With one goal since Gameweek 12 and 14 minutes game time over the last two matches, Tevez is now back down to his original price of 9.0, having risen as high as 9.9 earlier in the season. Jermain Defoe has been sold by 44,000 Fantasy managers after producing one goal in his last six, while current Chelsea forward Fernando Torres (38,000) and possible incoming rival Demba Ba (40,000) have been sent packing by many, with Rafa Benitez’s rotation likely to be detrimental to both players’ prospects.

Yaya Toure’s upcoming African Cup of Nations duties have seen 47,000 sell on the Ivorian, while Eden Hazard continues to slip in popularity – one goal and two assists under Benitez has prompted 38,000 to call time on his services. Somewhat bizarrely, Santi Cazorla (28,000) and Kevin Nolan (25,000) have also seen significant sales, despite both bracing themselves for a double.

Similarly, Per Mertesacker (23,000) and Jussi Jaaskelainen (13,000) have been transferred out, while injuries to Petr Cech and Jose Enrique have seen them both exit over 22,000 teams.

That looks like a 'money-too-tight-to-mention' type team. Better to have chjeapies in def than elsewhere. I'd think about double-up Stoke... Wilson £4m and should be back in a couple of weeks, looks good to boot Wilko.

    Seems that a few people are abandoning their defence in their WC's to field;
    Mata – Michu – Walcott – Bale – Fellaini as a 5 man mid.

Is it not worth doing Bale to Lennon etc for the extra money for defence? I'm joe average at FF but there does seem to be some value in defence with the big clubs. Skrtel, Zabaleta, Evans all under £6m example.

I'll be going with one big hitter probably (thinking Glen Johnson). I won't be going with that dream 5 man midfield though, far more expensive for me personally. Thinking 3-4-3 with Walcott - Bale - Michu - Fellaini and RVP - Berba - Suarez, with Puncheon on the bench.

It's basically the front 8 I have now!

Fair shout Doolittle, my thoughts are similar. I am swerving towards Mata though, possibly over Shaft, maybe Theo-won'tsign. That front line is likely mine too, although I have a sneaking for STudge over Suarez.

I feel like I've missed the chance with Mata, his price is somewhat astronomical now. I'll have to wait and see with Theo's contract, and won't be comfortable with Sturridge on the wing/shooting from everywhere.

So, I won't wild card until after the double game week. 3-4-3 or 3-5-2?

    3-4-3:

    Begovic
    Mertesacker, J Evans, Assou-Ekotto
    Michu, Santi Cazorla, Fellaini, Bale
    Van Persie, Adebayor, Berbatov

    Subs: Federici; Puncheon, Davies, Fonte

    3-5-2:

    Begovic
    Mertesacker, J Evans, Assou-Ekotto
Michu, Santi Cazorla, Fellaini, Bale, Walcott
    Van Persie, Adebayor

    Subs: Federici; Anichebe, Davies, Fonte

Maybe in count, but as someone who watches Everton every week, Mirallas is the far far far better player. Anichebe won't be in our team when everyone is fit. Of course, when/if that will ever happen is up for debate.

I just think Moyes can't ignore him after last night; his strength and mobility for his size and sheer presence can't be ignored right now. He's far superior to Naismith.

As you say, he may not always command a first team spot but I'd have thought for the next few games he's a good bet, and after that - assuming Mirallas manages to get and stay fit, he's always likely to be lobbed on as an impact sub and has often scored in that role when he has been used.

The only reason he has been peripheral @ Goodison is because he's so injury prone - and that in fact may be the most compelling reason to not pick him!! Granted the starting eleven is stronger than its ever been under Moyes but if he stays fit and plays like he has been in the last few weeks, Moyes will just have to accomodate him.

I'm just sorry I didn't put him in 3 weeks ago when I'd planned to, instead of a drunken and ultimately irritating one-week jag with Jelavic.....

Also i would be a tad worried about J.Evans. I don't think he's nailed on. SAF has too many options and some big champions league games. Avoid imo.

Well, earlier, EVERYBODY was moaning about leaving too much money on the bench in a 3-5-2, on account of expensive strikers. I have partly solved that problem.

Berba + Lambert? Just a thought if you were thinking of a cheaper attack. I know it seems trivial that something so obvious is being mentioned, but sometimes the most simple things are the best.

Walcott for DGW, Cuellar for fixtures (though they were very crap yesterday), Dawson is unlikely to play much. May as well put Demel in instead of Dawson due to his possible (if he plays) DGW and upgrade Cuellar with the extra 0.5 to Sagna, who also has a DGW.

I'm on the wildcard bandwagon gents, feel like I'm in working in Wall Street with all the transfers in and out and watching the price rises and falls like a paranoid hobo on the bus......here's something for you to chew on -

Michu + Anichebe (I think the latter has essentially guaranteed himself a starting berth after last night's cameo, far better than Naismith, if only he can stay fit for more than 5 minutes!! He'd still be probably the most benched of my forward 8)

    -OR-

Marveaux + Berba (The former would be bench fodder 95% of the time, assuming he doesn't go absolutely bananas in front of goal)

The rest of my starting 8 are all fine, I think.....?!!

I am saying a good replacement off the bench could easily propel one up the rankings. That 8th player is crucial, imo.

The bigger United's lead in the prem (?) the easier it will be for Fergie to rotate him....not just because he may need a rest but why risk injury to your prize asset if you're 12 points clear...yeah, reduced minutes may well happen...As for benches, well Hernandez could hardly be called second best...

Well, I'm just saying Anichebe has been good since he came back and Jelavić is still pretty bad in my eyes. If the coach thinks Jelavić is a guarantee and Anichebe for bench, it's his opinion. But I'm not sure he'll think so right now.

I don't think Cole is worth the hassle some people here give. I'd rather believe in Kenwyne, Pogrebnyak or Anichebe scoring in one game than Cole in two.

Not right now. Well down the list. Accuracy is usually an indicator of form.

Anichebe, 13 attempts, 2 on target
      Jelavic, 10 and 3
      Pienaar, 9 and 5
      Osman, 7 and 5

People going with likes of c cole, pog, ruiz in wc will be disappointed. Ok doing ok last couple of weeks but will till they don't score you any pts for a month whilst your "big hitting" midfielders have off days.

You will struggle. However each to their own, go for it. Just don't come back crying and complaining about how your cheap striker is crap.

I considered 3-5-2 and for a while was set on it. Recently however, I've begun to experiment with teams and find that 3-4-3 leaves much more wiggle room to change the team around.

I have Cole atm, but still have both wcs so don't see it as a huge problem

I've just been experimenting with a Suarez-free team.

    Begovic - Federici
    Assou-Ekotto - Zabaleta - Wilson - Cuellar - Davies
    Mata - Bale - Michu - Fellaini - Puncheon
Van Persie - Aguero - Berbatov

This is ofcourse dependant on Liverpool doing a traditional flop.

I'm tempted by Aguero - tipped him for the Golden Boot at the start of the season. I just feel like going for nailed on players is the best option, and that means avoiding Man City and Chelsea atm. Aguero would certainly not be a bad shout at all though, particularly as your bench option, Puncheon, is solid.
