Fantasy Premier League Focus

The breakneck speed of the recent festive schedule has afforded us little time to roll out many regulars but as the schedule finally begins to ease, we take a look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, analysing the goings-on at the top of the Scout League and the hectic transfer activity, as winter wildcards are activated:

Scout League Standings

T.I. reclaims top spot in the Scout League after an 80 point haul in Gameweek 21. Handing Robin Van Persie the armband earned 32 points, while Edin Dzeko, Raheem Sterling, Theo Walcott, David Silva and Leighton Baines all produced. T.I. is now up to second in the overall standings on 1348 points and, intriguingly, has already activated his winter wildcard.

Kevin Travers climbs to second after racking up 72 points last time out. He also captained Van Persie at Wigan, while Silva was joined by Dimitar Berbatov and Luis Suarez in picking up the points. Kevin is eighth in the rankings, with 1330 points accrued.

Former world number one Iyad Zahlan has recovered after a temporary festive blip. Back up to third in the Scout League, he picked up 83 points in Gameweek 21, albeit with a four point hit. A front three of Van Persie, Suarez and Berbatov delivered 40 points between them, while captain Marouane Fellaini and Joey O’Brien both produced double figure hauls. Iyad move back up the ranking to 16th overall, on 1324 points.

M.P. slips down to fourth after a 59 point Gameweek 21 haul, despite handing Van Persie the armband. Rafael, Walcott and Jason Puncheon were his other main men.

Eddie McGeever completes the top five. He sits on 1319 points, level with M.P, having returned 77 points last time out. Yet another one to captain Van Persie, he also saw Suarez, Walcott, Sterling and Fellaini chip in with attacking returns and moves to 20th overall.
The performances of our top five helped Fantasy Football Scout hold onto top spot in the Best Leagues. We are 14.8 points ahead of our nearest rival, while the FFS Members league has moved up to fourth overall.
For the contributors, Mark has hit top spot for the first time this season. Nine of his XI produced for a Gameweek 21 haul of 96 points, with captain Van Persie joined by Dzeko, Berbatov, Silva, Fellaini, Walcott, O’Brien, Glen Johnson and Ryan Nelsen – he now nestles inside the top 3,000.

Market Trends

Joey O’Brien has proven the most popular pick after his 15 point haul for West Ham against Norwich. The full-back was subbed off just prior to the Canaries scoring at Upton Park and with a goal and maximum bonus also accrued , he has earned over 71,000 new owners ahead of the Hammers’ double Gameweek 23.

Elsewhere at the back, Manchester duo Pablo Zabaleta and Patrice Evra have both earned a place in 26,000 new teams. Ian Harte’s cut-price appeal has seen over 20,000 draft in the 3.8 priced Reading left-back, while Russell Martin and Kieran Gibbs have each received over 16,000 new owners. Between the sticks, Asmir Begovic (21,000), Simon Mignolet and Adam Federici (both 17,000) have picked up plenty of attention.

Midfield reinforcements have been a priority. Marouane Fellaini (71,000) and Gareth Bale (38,000) have picked up plenty transfers in after their respective suspensions, while Theo Walcott’s new forward role has persuaded over 53,000 Fantasy managers to pick him up prior to the Gunners’ double Gameweek 23. Michu’s return from a brief ankle injury has him on the radar of over 23,000 new suitors, while 17,000 have snapped up West Ham’s Mark Noble for the double.

Up top, Luis Suarez, with back-to-back doubles, leads the way for transfers in. Over 65,000 have grabbed the in-form Liverpool forward – he is some distance ahead of Robin Van Persie (38,000) and Demba Ba (34,000), with many perhaps anticipating the latter’s move to Chelsea. Rickie Lambert has been subject to 31,000 trades in – he moved up to sixth top scoring forward over the festive spell, while Dimitar Berbatov’s return to form has persuaded over 26,000 to climb aboard the Bulgarian’s bandwagon.

In terms of transfers out, Carlos Tevez (73,000) is head and shoulders above any other player. With one goal since Gameweek 12 and 14 minutes game time over the last two matches, Tevez is now back down to his original price of 9.0, having risen as high as 9.9 earlier in the season. Jermain Defoe has been sold by 44,000 Fantasy managers after producing one goal in his last six, while current Chelsea forward Fernando Torres (38,000) and possible incoming rival Demba Ba (40,000) have been sent packing by many, with Rafa Benitez’s rotation likely to be detrimental to both players’ prospects.

Yaya Toure’s upcoming African Cup of Nations duties have seen 47,000 sell on the Ivorian, while Eden Hazard continues to slip in popularity – one goal and two assists under Benitez has prompted 38,000 to call time on his services. Somewhat bizarrely, Santi Cazorla (28,000) and Kevin Nolan (25,000) have also seen significant sales, despite both bracing themselves for a double.

Similarly, Per Mertesacker (23,000) and Jussi Jaaskelainen (13,000) have been transferred out, while injuries to Petr Cech and Jose Enrique have seen them both exit over 22,000 teams.

One thing has become clear to me this week as the wc madness has begun. People seem to think that every player under the sun over a certain price is essential

(Fellaini, Bale, Mata, Walcott, Suarez, Aguero)

Here's the thing, we are all having to stick to the same rules in regards to how many players we can own, and are all playing to the restrictions of our team values, and in some cases (Doosra :P) our own man crushes.

    Lateriser has this front 8

    Mata, Bale, Michu, Walcott, Fellaini

    RvP, Suarez, Berba

Looks great written there, but then you get down to it, how do you decide who to bench, since you can't play all of them. My take on this is, whether 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 somewhere down the line you will have to sacrifice a certain player or maybe even 2 to make it work in a reasonable way. I'd love that fornt 8, but

    a) I can't afford it
    b) It's be a nightmare trying to decide who to bench every week.

Thus I ask, am I mad to consider not owning Suarez or Theo. Chances are I can't afford them both so one of them will have to give way. Right now I think no Theo is a better option than no Suarez. Not having Suarez is murder week in week out as rival's profit. Theo is one of those knee-jerk in and out transfers, and big mids can more easily be moved about than big strikers.

Will more than likely end up with this myself:

      Fellaini - Bale - Michu - Mata - Sterling/Punch

      RVP - Suarez - Berba

I don't even listen to people who say this player is essential.

You can plan your dream front 8 all you like, in a months time it will be completely different.

This 3-5-2 craze is complete nonsence. People will be crying about their team and how crap their wc team is.

replied to you about that on the previous page,

That is one of the things about FFS. It has many great things from the stats to the members and most of the advice on here is superb. But contemplate anything away from the norm and people seem to see red and lose it. They can't appreciate that sacrifices must be made, we can't own everyone.

It's easy to get sucked in by the hype (or kneejerks).

I myself will stick with 3-4-3, the 3rd striker option for me is way to important to downgrade to such a cheap option.

+42 (especially about the man crush bit 😉 )

You pick the best team you can with the cash available. I'm sticking to 3-4-3 as that suits my budget and my preferences... right now. Hell, so much can change this month anyway. There's no point deciding now.

3-4-3 i think is the most flexible defo....5 big mids means no rotation barrin injury and a capataincy headache every week, if the big teams all do poorly in a week (has happened before), youre screwed

This is tempting to do. And i can afford it.

However, I would possibly play a 3-5-2. There are so many out of position midfielders this year that the points potential of these could be higher than many of the highly rated forwards.

Suarez is a good player. I'm not bringing him in just before he vists Old Trafford though. No way!

If he continues his current rich vein of form though I will have to. And that pains me very much as a Manchester United fan haha.

The big 8 is an experiment to see if i am comfortable moving with that forward. It is a nightmare when it comes to benching problems but lets see how that goes. Also, i agree about your point between Theo and Suarez but i reckon it would be worth monitoring how Sturridge changes that equation. Throw in the transfers in the Jan window, i think it is the most reasonable thing to hold on to that wc as long as possible and monitor things closely. And monitor all things, not restrict our thinking to these 'spoken about' players.

that's my point, week in and week out, one player is essential, the next week it's someone else. as non-Suarez owners you and i know how painful not owning him is. Guys like Theo and Cazorla can deliver explosive returns, but, like Nani, they also return a lot of 2s and 3s. Suarez and RvP weigh in with assists even when not scoring, and that's why I think that, after DGW, Suarez takes precedence over Walcott, and 3-4-3 over 3-5-2

Very few players are essential - I haven't owned Mata all season, and I'm top 800. I also can't afford the "big front 8"/think it would be a nightmare to bench a player. I'll most likely go:

      Walcott - Bale - Michu - Fellaini - Puncheon

      RVP - Suarez - Berba

yeah he is essential, i would say Suarez is too tbh, he's the 2nd top scorer in the PL, when he doesn't score he usually assists. That's what pushed me back to 3-4-3, 3-5-2 with Suarez and RvP is a killer.

Being halfway through the season fatigue injuries etc. are bound to kick in, I'm leaving a chunk of money on the bench in Rickie Lambert but I've actually analysed the starting front 7 game time so far and it has actually been rare for all 7 to play all at once so having a strong 8th attacker is a no brainier right????

Azpi is pretty much nonexistent in offensive points. He doesn't shoot, has no last passes. Luiz - he shoots, in last match he had 5 shots and even made free throws when Mata was around (not a good choice if you ask me, but...). Luiz can also have an assist for a long shot by Torres, Mata or Oscar. I think he's worth some more, but you decide how much trouble you have to take for the money.

Do you think Ruiz would be a cheeky way of saving a few bobs and still getting some of the points for Berba's run?? Ruiz prob won't score as many but if he got assists to some or most of Berba's goals (for which a strong case can be made), and the odd goal, he'd save 1.6 or so mill, and be a massive differential.....

    baines – cole – zabaleta – rafael

    nolan – michu – bale – walcott

Well yes he is 7 goals ahead of Aguero at the moment but that is completely irrelevant. Aguero plays for a better team and he seems to be finding form now so he could easily have a better 2nd half of the season than Suarez (regardless of Suarez finishing top scorer, or 2nd top scorer or whatever).

Silva is not worth a spot instead of goalscorers like Mata, Bale and Santi/Walcott though. With the current BP system he is not awarded as much for his assists and so loses out. Also, he is not a viable captain whereas players like Mata and Bale are.
