Moving Target

Moving Target – Marouane Chamakh

Sam Allardyce made his third move of the January transfer window last weekend by acquiring Marouane Chamakh on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season. The 28-year-old follows Joe Cole and Republic of Ireland teenager Sean Maguire to Upton Park as the Hammers look to build on a start which sees them sit eight points clear of the drop zone after the first 21 Gameweeks.

Having cut a peripheral figure for the Gunners this term, the Morocco international is desperate to reignite his career, following a hugely disappointing stint for Arsene Wenger’s side. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, Chamakh revealed he has high hopes for his time with the Hammers:

“I’m very happy to be here, I want to play and give my best for this team. I can bring my heading, some goals and we will see what else. I think this will be a very important move for me and I don’t want to waste any more time. I want to contribute immediately. I didn’t have opportunities to play recently, but I did well before and I know I am a very good striker. We played only one striker at Arsenal, so I didn’t play a lot, so I hope to do so more with West Ham.”

The Statistics

A product of the Bordeaux youth academy, Chamakh established himself as a first-team regular in the 2002-03 campaign. Over eight seasons with the French outfit, he produced 56 goals and 32 assists in 230 league appearances and also proved his worth in the Champions League, scoring 16 times in 38 matches before Arsenal snapped him up in the summer of 2010.

Vying with Robin Van Persie for the lone striker role proved impossible and despite the Dutchman’s Emirates departure last summer, Arsene Wenger’s move for Olivier Giroud was indicative of his loss of faith in Chamakh’s abilities. While his first season at the club harvested seven goals and six assists in 29 appearances, the Moroccan managed a single goal in 11 games last term and has failed to play a single minute in the Premier League this time round, with all four of his appearances coming in cup games. Chamakh has also turned out for his country on 61 occasions, finding the net 17 times.

The Prospects

Certainly, Chamakh seems the prototype Allardyce forward. Tall, physical, and with great aerial ability, he offers an alternative to Carlton Cole and Andy Carroll for the target man role in West Ham’s 4-3-3 system, with the likes of Joe Cole, Matt Jarvis or Ricardo Vaz Te tasked with supplying creativity and crosses aplenty from out wide.

While Allardyce revealed yesterday he is hopeful of a return for Carroll in time for the FA Cup Third Round replay with United on January 16, the on-loan Liverpool man has flattered to deceive, producing just a single goal and assist over 748 minutes since moving to Upton Park for the season. Considering Carlton Cole has played 987 minutes and managed two goals and an assist, it’s fair to say the Hammers’ forwards have drastically underperformed – while skipper Kevin Nolan has notched five times, he has notched just once in his last 11 league appearances, highlighting the club’s need for extra firepower.

As the statistics show, Chamakh was a real handful for Bordeaux. In retrospect, Arsenal’s brand of possession football seems ill-suited to his strengths – Allardyce’s tactics, on the other hand, look more likely to utilise his abilities, with Nolan buzzing around him, looking for flick-ons in and around the box.

Having lost his place in the Morocco squad, Chamakh no longer has African Cup of Nations duties on his upcoming agenda, bolstering his potential game time as Allardyce looks to address a run of games that have harvested just two wins and 10 goals in the last nine matches. On the downside, due to the conditions of his loan deal he is unavailable to play against the Gunners in the second match of double Gameweek 23 – not only does this lessen his short-term appeal, it is likely to have a knock-on effect on Cole and Carroll, if the latter is fit. It’s more likely that Chamakh will feature in the first game at home to QPR, perhaps lessening the likelihood that any of the Hammers’ forwards will start both matches.

Coming in at 5.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s substantially cheaper than Carroll, at 8.2, and could vie with the latter for starts, with Cole afforded the role of impact sub. Faith in his potential will be understandably slim but as Joe Cole’s display in the recent FA Cup draw with United demonstrated, sometimes it only needs a change in environment to bolster a player’s Fantasy prospects.

So Fellaini has a £22m release clause apparently. I could definitely see Chelsea or PSG activating it.

Felliani has claimed he wants to stay at Everton. I reckon if they get Europa league he will stay at Everton. Would hate to see him at Chelsea, the amount of players they ruin is ridiculous.

Turnbull is very temporary, you'll end up using a ft in a couple of weeks which is a waste on a GK. Prefer your original defence but your new midfield. Guess its a close call!

I could be wrong here but I remember seeing a different formation for a game Ramires started where it looked like:

      Ramires Luiz Lampard
      Mata Torres Hazard

      More of a 4-3-3 than a 4-2-3-1

Not sure if that has any truth in it though...but I also remember watching the game and thinking Ramires was fairly attacking and playing wider

as Mikel is gone ramires will play in dm alongside either lampard or luiz.

Mata Hazard and Oscar in midfield with either torres or ba up top.

Rafa majority of time picks 1 lone striker. So I don't think the formation will change alot from what we have seen.

Thanks -- does that mean Noble is a pretty safe bet for both games? I always had in mind his place being more cdm, though not enough game watching to back that up as more than a sense of where he was, than on the left wing. Will be very interested in their shape this weekend.

Fergie has publicly said how much he likes Rafa as a player. Smalling is naturally a centreback and Phil Jones tends to play CDM. If cup games build up there might be some rotation but I guarantee that Rafael is United's starting rightback

Could end up with similar amount of total games, but he is their first choice defender along with Evra. The difference being that Buttner is a much worse replacement than Smalling or Jones. So Rafa will get rested with more ease.

Couple of quick questions, which hopefully someone can clue me in on:
    1) What's the latest on Terry? I hear he's back in training, do we think he'll be fit in time to ruin Azpilicueta as a DGW option?
    2) What's the latest with the West Ham defence, in particular relating to Demel's chances of playing 2 games in the DGW?

Many thanks to anyone who takes the effort to help on either!

Nobody really knows either but consensus is Terry probably won't make Stoke but could easily make Soton and Demel is the most likely of the West Ham fullbacks to start both. At 4.0m he's probably worth the risk.

Long time no post, life caught up and having an awful time at the races this year. Injury blighted, doing a real Dyer season!! Anyways posted this up for another (private) site, it is just my own musings on WC options and should be taken as such. Not as in depth as the Scout reports of course and the formatting may be a tad off as it was designed for a blog site with nifty bullet points and all that jazz. Nothing really new either for regular FPL players either i'm sure.

Still, maybe someone might find it useful.

    Or not.

    Happy belated New Years.

    Goalkeepers:

Begovic: Record speaks for itself, bit of a no brainer in a GK rotation strategy. Rotates best with
Jaaskelainen for the rest of the season.

Jaaskelainen: Speaking of the old timer, West Ham represent a solid defense that should continue to keep giving if they can fix the injury crisis at the club. Good fixtures to come.

Mignolet: Solid enough defense, rotates well with Vorm or Begovic.

Szczesny: Perhaps worth mentioning, has a double in GW23 and costs 5.3. Arsenal defense underrated. Touch expensive to rotate, but could be paired with a cheap keeper and played every week. Low ownership.

Overall, Begovic and Jaask are by far the popular options and tbh I can't see a reason to switch. Worth mentioning Fulham and Swansea rotate very well, but in this case I think the masses are right on Beg/Jaask.

    Defenders:
Arsenal: Sagna (5.1). Good fixtures and a double. Regular and cheap route in to this good defense.

    Aston Villa: Avoid.

Chelsea: Azpilicueta (5.6), rotation risk but cheapest route in and seems to be getting good minutes. Luiz, 6.5 worth mentioning, OOP but too expensive imo unless your flush with cash.

Everton: Baines (7.5) always worth a mention, good fixtures to come, shit poor CS record. Good attacking threat. We know the story. If you have faith Everton can turn it around at the back, Distin 5.3 has become a regular and looks nailed on.

Fulham: Hughes 4.4 is decent in a rotation strategy with a Swansea or Stoke defender.

Liverpool: Very poor fixtures in January. Avoid.

Man City: Zabaleta (5.9) looks the safest route into this strong defense. Some attacking upside as well. Nastasic 5.6 is worth consideration as well, especially if Lescott moves out on loan.

Man UTD: Avoid, too expensive and too many rotation risks.

    Newcastle: Avoid

Norwich: Turner (4.1) cheapest route into this useful side. They rotate well with allot of sides such as SWA, Stoke and Wigan.

    QPR: Avoid

    Reading: Avoid

Southampton: Double in GW 22, they have improved at the back as well.. One of Clyne (4.0) or Shaw (4.0) seem like the best choices. Rotate well with Stoke, Fulham, SWA and Wigan.

Stoke: Good fixtures, Wilkinson (4.4) is the budget route in. Might be worth doubling up with Begovic even with this defense.

Sunderland: Cuellar (4.7) is a decent way into this okay defense. Good fixtures in Jan to come. Rotate well with Stoke, West Ham and Wigan.

Swansea: Davies (4.2) the cheapest route into this defense that has done okay up to now. Vorm back should improve them further and decent fixtures. Rotate well with a number of teams, e.g. Fulham, Stoke and SOU.

Spurs: Good defense, but hard to pick out a viable route into this defense. Worth keeping an eye on Dawsons (4.5) game time, if he nails down a spot he looks great value.

West Brom: Jones (4.4) offers a decently priced route into this..decent defense. Okay fixtures to come. Rotates well with Stoke and SOU.

West Ham: Good defense and fixtures to come, O'Brien (4.5) if he recovers from a hamstring injury looks the best route in here.

    Wigan: Avoid

Long section cut short, id be looking at Man City/Chelsea/Arsenal if shopping for elite defenders, lower down, Stoke, West Ham and Swansea all look like solid plays on a budget.

    Midfielders:

    Top Guns:

Bale (9.8) for my money is the best midfielder in the game. Has goal-scoring and assist potential, very rarely gets rested and plays in a good team. Id say he should be on everyone's shopping lists. Only 17% ownership to boot.

Mata (9.9) comes a close second to Bale, a double in GW22 and he is at the heart of everything Chelsea do. Goals and assist potential, has a fair share of set pieces, the only downside looks to be the odd rotation risk.

Walcott (9.0) looks a very solid investment. With a double in GW23 I see no reason not to pick him up. OOP and even if he does get started on the wing occasionally, still looks good value.

Fellaini (7.4), at his current price after the exodus and considering the fixtures, he looks a no brainer. Lower ownership now is a nice bonus.

Michu (8.2), OOP and top mid of the game. No real gains on opponents due to his ownership but do you dare drop him?

I tried to rank them in order of attractiveness here, I placed Michu a bit down due to his ownership tbh, it's a quandary we will all have to address individually. No real gains as nearly everyone still playing owns him, but do you dare go without..

Cazorla and Hazard were the main losers here, currently I think Walcott and Mata just look no brainers in comparison. You might double up on Walcott and Cazorla for the double in GW23 or Hazard and Mata for GW22, but long term I think they are options to monitor as better options exist.

    Top Gun Differentials:

Silva (9.4), only 6% ownership, truth is he has not matched last years performances, along with the rest of city. But if you wanted a differential, he has the talent and players around him to be a viable differential to catch a lead.

Gerrard (9.4), 3rd highest scoring mid and only 6% ownership. Difficult fixtures to come though in Jan. His dominance of set pieces and upside make him worth a consideration though if in need of a big differential.

Lampard (8.4). Not nailed on, but getting regular game time of late and playing for a new contract. Throw in a double in GW22 and his previous history in FPL, you got yourself a wee differential.

Silva and Gerrard imo represent the best viable alternatives here as differentials. I'm backing the previously mentioned top guns to outdo them, but I felt they're worthy of a place in a conversation at least.

    Best of the Rest:

Puncheon (4.9) Double come in GW22, possibly the best cheap mid to have.

Marveaux (4.3) Really cheap enabler getting his game now at Newcastle. Decent attacking threat and regular game time at his price is all you can ask for really.

Taarabt (5.7) OOP in his last game, set piece dominance, some really hard fixtures to come though, which turns me off him.

Sterling (5.6) Price, ownership and fixtures make this popular option no go imo.

Snodgrass (6.2) Okay fixtures and has being performing well to date. Solid mid price option.

Hernandez (5.9) Good stats recently, very low ownership and good fixtures make this Swansea mid a consideration in the mid price bracket.

Nolan (6.5) Has a double in GW23 incl a home game against QPR. Done poorly of late, but worth a thought as we know by his history he can bring home the bacon and his price seems fair.

Sessegnon (7.2) Has improved of late and good fixtures to come. Might be a choice based more off last seasons form then this years though.

    A.Johnson (6.8) Same as above!

Maloney (4.8) Plays in the front 3 and on set pieces for Wigan, another good cheap enabler.
Not too much here to get excited about, but then, at there prices, they do a job more then win you big gains.

    Strikers:

    Top Guns:

RVP (14.0) Not much to say, if you have him, keep him.

Suarez (10.4) Difficult fixtures in Jan, aside from that, he looks a keeper for the season. Liverpool look to be improving. Sturridge may mean he may move to the flanks, but tbh I don't think that will affect him or be set in stone.

Aguero (11.0) Hamstring injury, don't touch for now. Long term, he has tons of upside, but again, a no go for now.

Tevez (9.0) Aguero being out could mean Tevez playing more minutes. He has the history and form to be a big player again if he nails down a spot.

Rooney (11.8) Again, he is injured, so a no go. But when fit, he offers a viable alternative to RVP/2nd striker spot.

Not much overall to say here, they are pretty self explanatory. Ba narrowly misses out as i'm just not sure how he will fit in with Chelsea until the window closes. I suspect he will be rotated will Torres and is a wait and see. IF, he gets regular starts, he is a no brainer to get in. But that may depend on if Chelsea bring in another striker such as Falcao.

    Mid Priced Strikers:

Defoe (8.5) Solid player, decent fixtures and when he plays, he scores generally. Might be top of my mid priced strikers list. Tends to go on quiet runs though, but then goes on scoring runs.

Podolski (8.2) OOP and not in the good way, but has a double in GW 23 and is scoring regularly for the gunners. Definitely worth a short term punt at least.

Berbatov (7.1) Fixtures aren't the best, but he is cheap enough and quality enough to justify a place in our lineups as a 3rd striker. Might be worth forgoing him in Jan though.

Hernandez (7.0) As long as Rooney is out, he might be worth a roll of the dice over say Berbatov. Still a rotation risk, but elite finisher none the less for a great team.

Dzeko (7.3) Same as Hernandez, with Aguero out you would think he will get the nod alongside Tevez, and when he plays, he tends to do well. Good fixtures as well. With Mancini, he remains a rotation risk however.

Benteke (6.7) Best player in a poor team, good short term fixtures to come.

    Cheap 3rd Striker Slot

Lambert (6.2) Decent fixtures to come and a double in GW22. Makes a good 3rd striker.

Ruiz (5.4) Cheap and cheerful. Does a job. Difficult fixtures to come though.
With the quality among the mid range strikers, not sure id pick up a cheap 3rd striker this year, presumably you would play a 3-5-2 if you did though.

    Hey folks

Please rate my WCT out of 10:

    Begovic, £3.9m

    Luiz, Tomkins, Harte, Sagna, Demel

    Mata, Michu, Bale, Walcott, Fellaini

    RVP, Ba, Berbatov

Then for GW23 take -4 hit to do this:

    Out: Berba & Luiz
    In: Giroud/Podolski & Cameron

    How does all that sound?

When I saw your post pop up on the right hand side and saw that it included £3.9m GK, Tomkins & Harte, I just knew the midfield was going to be dynamite.

Who are you benching this week? I wouldn't want that problem. The front 8 is too strong for me, it's not easy but I'd pick 1 to downgrade and upgrade that defence.

    Wildcard questions.

Ba, the man on form, Torres improving not nearly at this best. No chance Rafa can play the two, for now Ba has to be the main man ?

Cuellar, injury scare a few days ago, no worries now?

Dawson, in my mind a better CB than Caulker and an aging Gallas. What chance has he of being the Spurs CB to play alongside Vertonghen?

Will O'Brien be fit enough to play this weekend?

    Thanks 🙂

      Sorry to say:

Ba not definitely the main man--Rafa and his boss both love Torres, so real chance Ba onlys starts one the DGW (but I have him anyway 🙂 )

Cuellar injury scare still active, but not clear for how long

Who knows? Decent chance but not nailed on.

Probably not, but possibly for the GW23 DGW.

United aren't getting many CS and one of the main reasons is because Evra is scoring goals and MIA. The days he concedes and doesn't score are poor returns. Better get a cheaper option with more CS and the odd chance of assist or goal, Azpilicueta if he was nailed on springs to mind.

Is Mata (c), Turnbull, Ba and Punch enough for the DGW ? May do Berba do Giroud next week for free and would then have Gibbs, Cazorla, Demel and Giroud 🙂 Thoughts ?

This. Martin might play a couple more matches, but Whitaker is due back 12 Jan according to FPL, so he could be starting the next week.

    How's this for a plan:

    Jaask, (Bego)
    Shaw, Luiz, Cuellar, (Gibbs, Demel)
    Walcott, Mata, Michu, Bale, Fellaini
    Ba, RvP, (Pog)
    0.3 in bank
    Playing 3-5-2 most weeks

    GW 23 - Ba - Podolski
GW 24/25 - Save / deal with injuries or suspensions
GW 26 - Gibbs & Podolski to Shorey & Suarez (when liverpool fixtures have cleared up)

hard to criticise too much. i think you won't enjoy having podolski for that long but other than that looks decent to me.

Good point - I might ship out Podolski after DGW for another mid-priced striker with good fixtures. Will take a look. Thanks.

tinkering with a potential WC team. Will require a very budget defender and midfielder.

10.5 to spend on a defender and midfielder.
    Best Combo?

Sport-Bild says Nuri Sahin is 99% certain to leave Liverpool and re-join Dortmund, presumably on loan

He's on loan. Can he be reloaned, is that even a word? Please god yes.

Reds are paying 2.2m wages and 5m for a year loan to Real. He'll not get into the Dortmund team so they'll probably use him as fertiliser because he's been absolute shite since he came to ANfiel.
