Watchlist

The Watchlist – Steven Fletcher

It took little time for Steven Fletcher to establish himself as something of a talisman for Sunderland this season. The summer signing from Wolves made an immediate impact on Wearside, with goals and maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points in each of his first four appearances making the £12m fee paid out to the Molineux side look a canny piece of business by Martin O’Neill.

After a barren autumn spell, the Scot has returned to form and from Gameweek 16 onwards has developed a real streak of consistency – he hasn’t gone more than a single match without producing attacking returns from that point, in a run that has harvested five wins in the last eight for the Black Cats. With 10 goals and four assists for the season, Fletcher has played a part in more than half his side’s 27 strikes and has collected 23 FPL bonus points, second only to Robin Van Persie’s 28 so far.

Up to fifth in the FPL forward rankings on 112 points, Fletcher sits at his initial FPL starting price of 7.0, having previously risen as high as 7.4. A brace away to Wigan last weekend seems to have caught the attention of Fantasy managers and as winter wildcards continue to be wielded, he is the most transferred in forward in the Gameweek, with over 21,000 snapping up his mid-price services.

Post-match, O’Neill singled out the Scotsman as the Black Cats continued their climb up the table after a 3-2 win over the Latics:

“The transfer seemed to be a bit of a saga at the time but it was well worth it. We relied on him at the beginning of the season; he was the only player scoring for us. Since then we’ve shared a few goals around but he’s a really top-class centre-forward, not just with his goals but in the way he brings others in to play. For one not so tall he’s strong: what Sir Bobby Robson called ‘a proper centre-forward.”

Fletcher’s flourishing form certainly looks to be afforded the chance to continue for the foreseeable future. Looking at the upcoming schedule, Sunderland have arguably just one tricky fixture in the next seven (SWA, rdg, ARS, wba, FUL, qpr, NOR) before matters takes a turn for the worse in Gameweek 31. While last season’s Fantasy favourite Stephane Sessegnon continues to toil, many may look to Adam Johnson as alternative Sunderland cover for their favourable run Fletcher certainly seems better value – he currently costs just 0.3 more than the former City winger and has averaged 5.3 points per game to Johnson’s 4.5.

As owners of Demba Ba begin to ponder a transfer out due to the uncertainty of game time under Rafa Benitez, and the likes of Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov struggle to produce consistent returns, Fletcher (who is priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game) has staked a real case for our consideration, with secure starts and run of form that’s becoming increasingly difficult to overlook.

Evening. Everyone seems to be bored. A Chelsea win would ensure that Bradford will be in the Europa League next season. Wow! 😀

Basically the winner of the cup gets a Europa spot (I think). But as Chelsea will have qualified for the Champions League, the runners up get the place.

I heard otherwise. Think that's the case for the FA Cup, but not the League Cup.

Irrelevant though, the cup's already got Bradford's name on it 😉

Mmmm, doubt it. Azpi is nailed on for me at RB. Luiz is less nailed on at CB and less nailed on in midfield. Once the midfield vacancy closes (which I expect it to soon) it's no contest.

But really, you think he is? When JT's back, I can see heavy rotation in that defense of ours.. Surely, Rafa won't always bench Cahill and Luiz and play JT, Ivan, Cole and Azpi every week.

Yeah I think Ivan is at risk. Or more specifically, that he is not a significant risk to Azpi at RB. Looks like Rafa is uncertain about him at CB, let alone out of position at RB

Alexander is stranded on an island covered in forest.

One day, when the wind is blowing from the west, lightning strikes the west end of the island and sets fire to the forest. The fire is very violent, burning everything in its path, and without intervention the fire will burn the whole island, killing the man in the process.

There are cliffs around the island, so he cannot jump off.

How can the Alexander survive the fire? (There are no buckets or any other means to put out the fire)

It was brilliant. This site crashed just after he posted the fake Spurs lineup. Everyone gets rid of Van Der Vaart (or brings him in - can't remember). Then the real team is posted.

Chaos. Not as many death threats as I predicted, mind.

Ok, RMWCT with a twist: I'm looking for a mix of underrated/punt players and "safe" players, so consider this:

    Bego/Fed

    Sagna/Azpi/Davis/Clyne/Harte

    Mata/A. Johnson/Kebe/Gerrard/Punch

    Suarez/Aguero/RVP

Any more sensible punts to suggest?

I like the idea of a Suarez Aguero RVP trifecta as an alternative to all the big 5 talk, but going without Fellaini and Michu is a gamble. Not sure Aguero + Kebe is better than Lambert + Fellaini/Michu

I kind of like that, and I have alternative WC teams set up with both of them. Might take the punt elsewhere then. Fletch and Sturridge alre also in contention.

Also, is anyone going with strong defence, namely Evra- Zab?

it probably is. you cant really do much with the 0.5m if your team stays same anyways.

if Ba does leave your team id be tempted to do BA and o brien to lambert and zaba. not yet though

Does it annoy anyone else that when u make a post, the site shows you about 14 different angles of the site, before it finally settles down & then shows you your post?

It drives me mad. But it's a HTML problem more than an FFS problem.

Here's a fact some of you won't know.

The name of the top flight division in the English football league is called the Premier League. There is no such thing as the Premiership, in English football. It changed over 5 years ago (2007).

Surprising how many people still insist on calling it the Premiership - even people like Glenn Hoddle and Graeme Souness haven't yet grasped it and it's their job to talk about the game! 🙂

If you were a manager and you said that, then you'd be shot by the PR police for missing off 'Barclays'.
