Scout Report – Yoan Gouffran

Newcastle continued their French shopping spree yesterday after acquiring Yoan Gouffran from Bordeaux on a four-and-a-half year deal. With just six months remaining on his contract, the 26-year-old forward moves to St James’ Park for a bargain fee believed to be in the region of £1.5m, and is the third player to arrive from Ligue 1 this month, following Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to the club.

Having lost top scorer Demba Ba to Chelsea, strengthening the attacking positions was always going to be a priority for Alan Pardew and, with Hatem Ben Arfa still sidelined with an ongoing hamstring problem, the Magpies boss spoke of his delight after bringing the versatile Gouffran to Tyneside:

“Yoan comes to the club with a great pedigree and, like the other signings we have made this month, is a player who will add considerable strength to our squad. I liked the look of him when we played Bordeaux at St. James’ Park earlier this season; pacy, direct and intelligent and those are qualities I like in a footballer. I am sure he will quickly adapt to the rigours and intensity of the Premier League and play an important role for us for the remainder of the season.”

The Statistics

For someone who is allergic to grass, Gouffran has made an impressive start to his career. Starting off in the French lower divisions with FC Caen, he helped his side earn promotion to Ligue 1 in 2006-07, with a 15 goal haul earning him the Ligue 2 Player of the Year award. Over five years with the club, he produced 33 goals and seven assists from 115 appearances before being snapped up by Bordeaux in June 2008.

Gouffran’s debut campaign for his new club proved somewhat bittersweet – his winner against Caen in the final game of the season clinched the Ligue 1 title for Bordeaux but sent his former side back down into the second tier. Over his time at Bordeaux, Gouffran produced 31 goals and 11 assists from 139 league appearances, though his final couple of campaigns were particularly impressive, with 22 goals and three assists accrued from his final 54 Ligue 1 matches before making his way to Tyneside. He has also turned out for the France U21 side on 22 occasion, finding the net three times, though has yet to receive a call-up at senior level.

The Prospects

Certainly, Gouffran is no like-for-like replacement for Demba Ba. Standing five foot nine, his pace and trickery in possession means he’s equally as comfortable on the flank as he is through the middle. Alan Pardew has the option of utilising the new boy as a strike partner for Papiss Cisse in a 4-4-2 or fielding him out wide in a 4-3-3, with Hatem Ben Arfa – when fit – also flanking the Senegalese striker.

Given that the latter formation seems to suit Cisse better, Gouffran is perhaps more likely to be fielded out wide, despite the fact he’s plundered 10 goals from 23 appearances in all competitions through the middle for Bordeaux this season. New team mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa summed up Gouffran’s main attributes:

“I have met him several times, and played against him in the French league. He is the type of player that gives us defenders a lot of work, he makes us work very hard. He runs deep, collects the ball, and holds it up very well. He lets the team get forward, and gives the team chances to counter attack. He’s good on the ball, and that would be something very useful for the team.”

Faith in Newcastle’s Fantasy assets is understandably low after a poor season finds them just two points above the drop zone with 15 matches remaining. Cisse is now the club’s top scorer with four strikes, while Cabaye and Ben Arfa are next best with three goals apiece – given that the former has two appearances since Gameweek 12 and the latter has featured once since Gameweek 13, it’s a damning indictment of the current squad’s minimal contributions and certainly bodes well for Gouffran’s game time, as Pardew looks to the new boy to boost his side’s attacking potential.

His arrival looks set to place question marks over the game time of Sylvain Marveaux – the latter has now started the last five and has been eyed up as a potential bargain at 4.3 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but may struggle to retain his starting berth. A FPL price in the region of 7.0 seems realistic – considering Ba started off at 7.5 – but many will be happy to hold fire and assess Gouffran’s role within the team before considering his potential.

His Fantasy prospects could come down to his classification, though. Gouffran looks likely to be listed as a forward – given his starting role for Bordeaux – but with Ben Arfa down as a midfielder and Cisse now set to play through the middle regardless of formation, the new boy could well struggle to persuade investors unless Pardew has him earmarked for a central berth. Like Everton’s Kevin Mirallas, then, he may find himself on the periphery of our thinking – a great talent whose possible reverse out of position role could significantly limit his appeal.

Avoid West Ham defence, been poor recently.

Definitely get Wilson in when he's fit and DDG could be dropped. Tough one, but I'd prefer Bego to DDG still. Rafael is my Man U defensive coverage (even though Man U defensive coverage is barely essential) because he poses a decent attacking threat.

there is no player who I'm more scared of not owning than Bale. But sadly, having ballsed up by selling Theo, it will now cost me too much to have all the power 5.

Bale is the least consistent and Fellaini the most interchangeable, so no Bale for me sadly.

you will find several on this

There is always 2 sides to it, plenty see Bale as a must have, plenty will say his spikes may not justify constant ownership

Personally I've found this season that consistency beats explosivness. Look at Lennon. If you factor out the Villa game, Lennon is outscoring Bale

yes but as I've stated, I HAVE to go without one. The greater consistency of Mata and Theo draws me to them.

I'm not saying Bale is not an option, merely why I've not picked him. i would never advise against Bale, I've admitted that the thought of not owning him this weeks scares me, but I buggered up by selling Theo when i hit the button. Had i sold Bale instead I would be ok as Theo would be taking up less of the budget.

midfield wont always be static though. injuries/suspensions will eventually play spoil sport.

the second striker spot will always be prone to rotation between the likes of ageuro/suarez/ba/cisse.

cash in on their form while u have a steady midfield.

I'm WCing next week so I get one complete punt this week. I've already got Cisse in last week (too early you might say, here's hoping he toasts Villa like he should've toasted Reading).

It's tricky deciding whether to keep Podolski against Liverpool's tight defence (he now has 5 double figure hauls and is 7th in the forward rankings, plus got a goal and assist in the Liverpool game earlier in the season). If I did sell which of the alternatives would you take?

    A) Benteke at home to Newcastle
    B) Berbatov at home to West Ham, who just got thrashed again
    C) Dzeko away to QPR (we'll get the teamsheets before the deadline so no rotation risk for one week only)
    D) Hernandez at home to Southampton (we don't get the teamsheets, but if he doesn't start in the fa cup it's a calculated punt)
    E) Jelavic or Anichebe. Risky.
    F) Keep.

I have, unfortunately he's priced out for me. Can't swap michu for him and wouldn't lose Walcott/Mata/Fellaini.

I do think he'll be a great oop pick in the medium term. Norwich away puts me off slightly, but I don't know if their defence has changed from their earlier home displays.

I think one week was an injury and the other rested, but no, he's not as nailed on as he was under Rodgers. Still, he'll play 99% of the rest of the season and prevents a benching headache. Marveaux and Guthrie are riskier and when it's only bench fodder.

get rid of Harte mate, he's a red herring.

Pearce is the Reading defender to own. I;d then upgrade Demel, West Ham don't look capable of a CS atm and they may be looking at a new full-back. I'd rather have Clyne, Shaw or Turner

            +1000

We are swayed too easily by Harte being on set-pieces. He offers nothing from open play in the way Shorey did, plus he will get the assist. It will be the likes of Pog and Pearce who get the goals. Sadly I have yet to find a home for Pearce, though I could be tempted to swap Turner for him

I just took a look at Norwich's defence. The last time Whittaker was fit it was Martin who dropped. I expect the same again. It was also no co-incidence that Norwich's upturn in defensive fortunes co-incided with this switch IMO 😛

It annoys me more when people say something as if it is fact and a completely unquestionable truth.

Such as 'Bale will score more than Walcott for the rest of the season', suggesting that they went for a ride to next May with Doc Brown and just got back this afternoon to tell us the news.

Agreed - to be honest looking at it logically I think Walcott is probably favourite to be the best scoring mid for the remainder of the season, and possibly even catching and passing Mata to finish top overall.

RVP will score at least once in the next two gws.

I'd still go nasty for price and security. Richards and Maicon grow nearer to recovery and could be a waste of a transfer to get him out down the line 😕

First time posting on here, but looking forward to all the forums 🙂

    Current team:

    Mignolet (Szcezny)
    Zabaleta Gibbs Evra (Davies) (Harte)
    Michu Fellaini Bale Walcott Mata
    RVP Fletcher (Pobgrebnyak)

If Bale fails to fire in the next 2 weeks, considering Gerrard. Happy to hear any suggestions 🙂

      think that should work

Lmabert is great pick, but Fletcher is bang in form and has 2 great fixtures coming up. It would seem young Joseph is not nailed on, Fellaini's next 2 make him a great pick as well. 2 home games against a WBA side that don't travel well and a Villa side that are just cr@p

Power 5 debate - look at the Points per game for each of them.

Only rvp beats all of them.

suarez is in the mix with the others and beats michu. but take into value for money and michu stays

        exactly.

        mata michu felliani bale walcott
        rvp ageuro/suarez

will be hard to beat. add in zaba and rafa as my two defenders and should see me well until end of season

And this is based solely on previous events. Many striker options have had extenuating circumstances which have limited their output.

No it doesn't. How many times has Aguero had a late cameo as he's been rested for CL. Whenever you come back from injury you usually have a sub appearance first, which also drags it down.

it's a simple case of economics.

My tv is not really suited to having the power 5 with RvP and Suarez or Aguero

It's also not about what has been, it's about what will be.

the power 5 may not live up to the heights of the first part of season but i cant see any of them dipping in form too drastically. only one that worries me is felliani if he ends up playing deeper.
