Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Some help would be appreciated here lads.

    Mignolet
    Gibbs Davies Wilson
    Mata Walcott Michu Bale
    RVP Suarez Giroud

    Andersen Gaston Demel Clyne

    2.2M 1ft

My thinking earlier was downgrade Gaston to Guthrie and upgrade Giroud to Kun. But i am happy to keep Giroud for the foreseeable. So that leaves me with defence as the only possible area of improvement. I can do Gibbs -> Zaba/Rafael but Arsenal have good short term fixtures. Also, doing one of my cheapies -> Zaba/Rafael is also an option, but that leaves me with no possibility of bringing Aguero in for Giroud but instead for Suarez (at a later stage). Is that defensive upgrade worth it? Or should i just save my transfer (What i prefer i think).

Don't go there. I don't expect Nani to start. Even if he does, he'll have a bad game in all probability.

I'm looking at Dempsey/Bale and Aguero as well. Could get one of them for free or both for -4. Hmm, not sure what to do ...

Yeah keep Giru since hes in good form.

Yes defensive upgrade is worth it. (Top) teams tighten up in the second half of the season.

I'd do Gibbs instead of cheapie for upgrade, you will want to get Aguero later on.
      Gibbs -> Zaba for me.

Could be Rafael but he's likely to be rotated on UCL fixtures

Fair enough I know you were going there.

But Zaba (and Rafa) also offers attacking return AND potential clean sheets.

And between Arsenal or Manc teams, I reckon the Manchesters got better fixture.

So yeah for me, unless you need that 1 FT in your future plans (which I doubt since you can do Giru-Aguero swap straight away), I would get a better defender in there in place of Gibbs.

Keep Gibbs imo. You are playing Wilson? He is not back yet, but you are hoping he will? I would save the funds for a Giroud upgrade, as that forward spot should prove more valuable than an upgraded defender imo.

I am still mulling over my three forwards. Obvious RvP is staying - but the other two are questionable.

    Now: RvP Ba Suarez
    Possibles: RvP Fletcher/Ba/Berbatov Suarez/Aguero

Should I change or leave (free transfers)?

    Bego Bunn
    Evra Azpicueta Davies O'Brien Harte
    Walcott Mata Michu Fellaini Marveaux
    RVP Suarez Fletcher

    Funds left: 0.3m

Debating whether to get Bale instead of Fellaini since the latter has dropped to midfield last few games, but then again its a home game against WBA.

Harte is the same price as Pearce, so I could, but that might be too short-term.

I could also do Demel to Cuellar but then that would leave me with only 0.2 in the bank to do Fletcher to Sturridge which isn't enough, is that worth it? Maybe, one to think about

Bit of a joke really. I am genuinely tempted to though. How much of a differential (and a potentially maaaaaaaaajor one) would that be?

Home v Southampton ( a team who let's face it, beyond all the clyne, shaw, punch and lambert hype, is still going to be facing a fight for relegation until the end of the season!!!).

RVP is just obvious isn't it. I could gain a lot of points, and wouldn't stand to lose that many, since EVERYONE will captain RVP.
