Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

So then, If I get Cuellar over Demel I will be 0.2 off of being able to get Sturridge in GW26 for Fletcher, is it worth it?

    Bego
    Bertrand Cuellar Davies
    Bale Fella Michu Theo
    Ba RVP (C) Aguero (VC)

    Taarabt Demel Harte

On WC. 0.6 available. Keeping the extra so when I downgrage/change Ba to someone else, I can bring in Rafa/Wilson for Bertrand.
    Thoughts on the team?

Seems good but lacking Mata. I like Mata more than Bale but that's subjective.

And yeah you need to upgrade your defense. Evans / Nasty if you're short on cash.

Had Mata for the 2 weeks he has done nothing before and prior/after that never owned him. He is too expensive now for my liking. Looking to bring in Rafa down the line but this week requires me a cheaper def due to how top heavy I am.

True. Works for both. But I've owned Bale pretty much the whole season. He is the main man at Spurs and if Spurs get points it would be through him. Whereas Mata has others to share I think.

Ok I will say a simple sentence "You Will Get Headache If Taarabt Is On The Bench". It's up to you. I rather have more money and upgrade defence in 11 rather than wasting my money for my bench.

a friend in my mini league has gone 5 cheap defenders and stacked his team. I told him he's mad, but now he's telling me how 'smart' a move this is because of he picked up 2 players with Southampton clean sheets. ugh.

I've got one expense (Rafael) and one mid priced (Bassong) then 3 cheapies myself. certainly his 'strategy' will crumble that never works.

or so I keep telling myself.

"cheap as chips" on defense is fun. Very few things in life compares to a 3.8m/4m defender keeping a CS.

        +1

I have wildcarded into upgrading my frontline to include RVP and keep most of my midfield which I have ridden well thus far, but the consequence (if I don't change before WC expires) is that I have uber defense by default. Hope it works!

Not true. I always go with the cheapest possible defence and my rank and GW's have been doing decent if you'd like to take a look. Every now and then its best to test your luck and throw in a mid/expensive def but more often than not, CS are hard to predict and not worth the time and effort.

Haha I love this attitude! Here's hoping it works for you. It should be said that those heavier hitting defenders offer far more than CS potential I think we all know, and their price tags reflect that. But I agree that trying to guess CS is madness to an extent. The key is whether the cheapies can get in some attacking points like their more expensive brethren.

That's true. Much easier to guess attacking points as oppose to defender points. If you asked someone if they would rather have Rafa/Zaba/Ivanovic as oppose to RVP/Aguero/Ba, pretty much everyone would pick the latter as you will get more higher returns.

Get 1 expensive one. The rest of 4 cheap rotation. But if you do that don't try to get the 3.8 one. Because rotation means 4 mill to get CS and assist or may be goals or may be BPs. Reading will hardly to get CS

I think in both cases you're benching to much cash. It's fine to have quality on the bench but you want nailed on starters first and foremost, just in case they play, but you are planning on them not playing, so why keep cash tied up in them?

Not referring to your defense at all, it seems fine. And not Marv the consensus is that he'll most likely lose his place soon. What I'm saying is there is no reason to have the cash tied up in Nolan/Lambert if you're not going to play them. If you pitched Lambert for let's say Pog or Anichebe think how much cash you'd free up to upgrade someone in your starting XI if you so chose.

Zaba I dont think mancini will leave him out as he has been both solid at the back + good going forwad when they need him to, he is versatile meaning he is able to play many different positions in mancini's various formations and set-up and also city are out of europe this season unlike united. City will need to maintain a solid defence from now until the end of the season to compete with united for the title. So that is why I reckon Zaba is the best defender to have

Yeah but look at Mignolet's fixtures. I got Migs for 5.2 so made my decision easier. My thinking is sooner or later,

              SUN + STO
              Migs(5.3) + Wilson (4.0) -> 9.3
              Bego(5.1) + Cuellar (4.5) -> 9.6

I see what you are getting at, but I'd rather have Clyne(4m) for now and jump on Wilson when he is fit AND playing again.

I'm on WC and have Cuellar who is injured, no use replacing him with another injured player.

But yeah, it hurts to not have any Sun cover. All could change of course if I sell Zaba. When is Evans back?

My rival has Suarez/Felli, so I'm not losing them.

Say till Adebyor returns? Best to go with Demps? Since your punting instinct is top notch, whatdyu think mate?

Rafael - SOT ful EVE qpr
Gibbs - LIV STO sun AVL
Zaba - qpr LIV sot CHE

Surely holding onto Gibbs makes sense for STO sun AVL

Also, how are more people not punting on Ollie?

    Benteke + Puncheon rotation:

NEW wig WHU new QPR RDG followed by QPR!

Though I'm not sure anybody out here (me included) has the marbles to go for this one.

Also there's not much to spend the money on, with such cheap rotation really.

Feels like I've been on my winter wildcard for ages, activated during last GW to clean up DGW madness. I can't wait for it to be over so I can go back to considering one or two transfers every week rather than eleven trillion.

    Bego (bunn)
    Baines gibbs azp (demel mariappa)
    Bale mata fellaini walcott marveaux
    Rvp ba (lambert)
    2 FT, 0.3

I am quite fine with my team but don’t want to loose my FT, so:

A demel to davies (still would bench him or play over marveaux)
    B azp to zab
C azp to a defender up to 5.2 and lambert to fletcher
    D other
