Scout Reports

Scout Report – Lewis Holtby

Tottenham made their first acquisition of the winter transfer window by snapping up Lewis Holtby from Schalke earlier today. The 22-year-old midfielder had previously agreed to join the north London outfit on a free transfer next July but the deal has been pushed through by Daniel Levy earlier than anticipated, for a fee reportedly in the region of £2m.

Only a week ago, Andre Villas-Boas was somewhat sceptical of acquiring Holtby this month but the Spurs boss was nevertheless quick to sing the player’s praises:

“Lewis is a player of tremendous potential, one that we are extremely happy to have here. (He is) a very, very creative player and can play in different positions – he’s been tremendously educated in his football and has lots of experience for such a young player. We have high expectations for him.”

The Statistics

Released by Borussia MGladbach as a youngster, Holtby moved to second-tier German outfit Alemannia Aachen and, after working his way up their youth system, made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign. The midfielder mustered just two first-team appearances in his first season but the following year, a return of eight goals and 10 assists over 31 games persuaded Schalke to shell out for his services prior to 2009-10.

After producing a pair of assists in nine games, Holtby was farmed out on loan to VFL Bochum in the second half of his debut campaign, returning a couple of goals and two assists in 14 appearances. The following season he was loaned out again and made his mark at FSV Mainz 05 with four goals and 10 assists from 30 matches. Having justified his worth in German’s top division, Holtby was installed as a first-team regular by his parent club the following campaign – six goals and a pair of assists last term was followed by four goals and seven assists in 19 appearances this year; a clear sign of both his eye for goal and creativity.

On the international front, Holtby has represented Germany from Under 19 to Under 21 level, scoring 18 goals from 38 appearances, and has also turned out at senior level on three occasions.

The Prospects

Holtby’s versatility makes it difficult to ascertain his likely starting position under Villas-Boas. One theory is that the transfer has been brought forward due to Sandro’s season-ending knee injury sustained earlier at QPR this month, with the German set to tuck in alongside Mousa Dembele in the double-pivot – a fair assumption, given that the likes of Tom Huddlestone has failed to make an impact, while Scott Parker has only just returned from a long-term Achilles problem. Certainly, while Holtby has impressed as a playmaker, he’s also more than capable of grafting in the middle of the park and affords Villas-Boas a definite option from a deeper berth.

Alternatively, 22 of Holtby’s 24 starts in all competitions for Schalke this season have been in the role in “the hole”. Given that the German side also utilise a 4-2-3-1 formation, the new boy would fit seamlessly behind a lone forward and lend his creative weight to a berth that has seen Gylfi Sigurdsson and Emmanuel Adebayor fail to flourish. Although Clint Dempsey is starting to return to form, the US international will be worried by Holtby’s arrival. Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon are pretty much nailed-on out wide, leaving one position up for grabs in the attacking midfield three and with Adebayor also in the mix as a more withdrawn forward behind Defoe, Dempsey could be edged back onto the bench, despite some recent impressive displays.

In Fantasy terms, then, much is dependent on how each game views him. If Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks upon Holtby as a central midfielder, a price of around 6.0 could be on the cards, while a cost of around 7.5 to 8.0 is likelier if they expect him to be utilised as an advanced playmaker. Ideally, then, the best scenario would be for Fantasy games to price him in accordance with deep-lying midfielders, only for Villas-Boas to field up further up the pitch – giving us a budget-friendly route into Tottenham’s midfield as the north London outfit step up their pursuit of a Champions League spot over the remainder of the season.

There will always be somebody that you can't fit in. For you it's obviously Bale or Mata.

I can't stand the sight of Guthrie in peoples teams unless you'll never, ever have to play him.

Let's put it this way: I wouldn't take a hit to switch any of those (other than Guthrie) to Mata, but I would select Mata over, say, Silva or Walcott if there were no hit involved. Whether I would transfer him in for free would depend on other possible uses for the transfer.

So how many points do we think Baines will score in the next 2? Reallly tempted by Gibbs -> Baines for a free. But that means no Kun for the forseeable. Add to that the fact that Gibbs has decent fixtures himself.

How has Baines looked off late? Threatening?

I have him, and I'm glad I do; I think he has looked as threatening as always. But for the reasons you stated I am not sure I would switch Gibbs out for him. I don't have Kun and will be keeping an eye on him. I would want to be in a possition to get him if he starts heating up. So I would do it unless it means you will hamper your ability to get Kun if you need to.

This DGW is really hirting my head.

Don't know if I can field 11 players for the blank week, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Ba.

    Should I:

    A. Have 4 (2 Swansea, 2 Liverpool) for the DGW
    B. Go all out and have 6 DGW and use WC to clean up
    C. Have 5 DGW players and take a hit to clean up for the blank.

    Any advice would be good.

      So C.

This DGW not worth it for WC. Liverpool got good fixtures and Michu Davies are keeper so you don't have to get them out asap.

    On my WC and thinking:

    Fed, Mig

    Cameron, Davies, Mariappa, Zambaleta, Evra

Mata, Bale, Michu, Walcott, Afro (Big-5)

    Fletcher, Pog, RVP

    (0.8 in bank)

My strategy is to always usee Zambaleta and Evra in an 3-5-2 formation. The other three defenders rotates well. I will always field the Big-5. In GW26 i do Fletch to Sturridge.

Problems, I've no city or Pool attacking coverage as it is now. The only option is to switch Bale to Silva or downgrade him to Marvx and upgrade Fletcher to Aguero or Suarez.

    What do you guys think?

The big 5 kills your strike force in my opinion especially considering there's a risk of Fellaini's output reducing due to his position rotation and Michu hasn't been setting the world alight in recent weeks.

        -1

Worth the risk over the next 2 with Eve having WBA/VILLA.

Also Michu OOP and has possible DGW in 26.(Graham appar on his way out of Swans)

Re asses in gw 26 when Pool/Swans have possible DGW.

Yep got Michu at 6.5 so he's a seasonkeeper for me, especially when a DGW is on the horizon.

I'm a bit worried about Fell, but as you say, he has two good fixtures in GW24 och 25.

On WC, do I go without Bale or without Mata? Leaning towards leaving Bale out.

No Bale -> Zabaleta, Mata, Fellaini
No Mata -> £5.0 def, Lamps, Bale

Could also get funds by doing Rafael -> cheaper and Suarez -> Sturridge, but I really want those two.

so how many of you chumps have got a Plan B in place for when you see the team sheets before the deadline?

i've been through about 30 different line-ups with varying formations and finally settled on something but i know, i just know, that when one of my picks is ruled out later today, my knee will jerk its little cap off and i'll end up changing everything, choosing the wrong captain and left fuming when the FPL site crashes.

Don't know why regarding Ba I got this gut feeling

GW 24 vs Reading - Ba starts solo striker
GW 25 vs Newcastle - Torres up top, Ba on the left
GW 26 vs Wigan - Ba starts solo, Torres rested for Europe
15/02 vs Sparta Praha - Torres
17/02 vs Brentford FA cup - Ba
22/02 vs Sparta Praha - Torres
GW 27 vs City - Ba starts

Ba seems like a good punt for the next 4 GWs.

    Oh dear.

Have had no time to consider my wildcard team since I pressed the button (and I've little time to do so today) My head is spinning with possible DGWs, potential bargains on the cusp of returning from injury, rotation headaches, etc.

My appalling TV makes this even tougher than it should be. I sometimes wish I didn't play this damn game!
