Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Swansea

A visit from QPR and a trip to Anfield comprise the menu for a Gameweek 26 feast haunted by the prospect of famine for Swansea. With goalkeepers useful instruments in double-then-blank scenarios, the uncertainty around Michel Vorm’s availability imposes an ill-timed tactical restriction on Fantasy Managers. But with strong candidates abounding in defence and midfield, we run the rule over the surviving runners and riders from the Swansea ranks as another Double Gameweek deadline approaches.

The Prospects

The insolent gung ho of Swansea’s early outings this season seems to have given way to a more pragmatic approach of late. The best away defensive record in the league has kept Fantasy Managers in business whilst the headline hogs have stumbled over an itinerant schedule. Failing to find the net in their last three away games, investors in the Swans’ attack can still repose hope in their form at the Liberty, where they average over two goals a game since Christmas.

QPR are hardly sitting ducks: Harry Redknapp’s rejuvenated charges have been in formidable defensive nick this year, shipping just one goal in their last five games. Yet with personnel changes imposed at the back for the Hoops through defection and injury, Swansea’s fluent forays will doubtless test the cohesion of the replacement draft.

Liverpool have been imperious at Anfield of late: flinging twelve goals past Fulham, Norwich and Sunderland without reply. But with European commitments on the cards midweek for the Reds, the Swans might be fortunate enough to face a weakened, or at least, slightly fatigued eleven come next Sunday.

The Likely Lads

The points may have dried up in recent weeks for Michu, but the chances certainly haven’t. In spite of a seven game goalless run the Spanish sensation still tops the ownership charts on 49%, and those brave or foolish enough to forgo his services run the risk of being precipitated headlong down the rankings when he locates his shooting boots. Marouane Fellaini’s brace last weekend after a similarly barren spell furnished a valuable, some might say painful, reminder of the value of patience in Fantasy football – and whether leading the line or tucked in the hole, Michu will have no shortage of backers come Saturday. Currently priced at 8.4 in FPL (5.5 in Sky Sports) and languishing a distant fourth in this week’s captaincy poll, Fantasy Managers have the rare opportunity to make the most widely owned player in the game a differential captain in a double Gameweek.

Having spent most of the season deeper than Wittgenstein and scratching out an honest dollar from the Swansea set plays, a couple of elegant open play strikes in recent weeks have showcased Jonathan De Guzman’s capacity to make merry in more advanced positions. With Leon Britton partnering Ki Sung-Yueng in the double pivot last weekend at West Ham, De Guzman was pushed forward in support of Michu – and although the experiment was terminated after an hour by the introduction of Luke Moore, it seems likely that De Guzman will be given leave to weigh anchor whenever Michu is called upon to lead the line. Priced at 5.9 in FPL (4.7 in Sky Sports), owners of the Dutch international will have dead-balls to fall back on irrespective of his open play position.

Grabbing the baton from the unfortunate Neil Taylor in Gameweek 2, and wrecking the FPL pricing curve for the Swansea defence in the process, recent watchlistee Ben Davies has been the default Swans back-line pick around these parts for many months. His tidy finish against Stoke having advertised his merits to a wider audience, the young left back is now tipping the scales at 4.6 (3.6 in Sky Sports) – a sum perhaps more consummate with the dignity of his office. Still the cheapest option on show, and with more attacking points garnered than the rest of the Swansea defence combined, Fantasy Managers are hardly overwhelmed with incentives to broaden their horizons.

That said, Angel Rangel wangles his way into the reckoning from the right. With fullbacks given license to roam in the Swansea system, the high ground is very much down the flanks in defence. Although destitute of attacking returns since Gameweek 2, Rangel versus Davies on the members’ comparison tool makes for interesting reading, and with a current price of 4.7 in FPL (5.7 in Sky Sports), just 0.1 more than Davies, the Spaniard makes a good case for consideration.

Cheeky Punt

Michu and De Guzman aside, the Swansea attack boasts more punts than an Inspector Morse box set. Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer and Pablo Hernandez are tussling for the two wide midfield slots, whilst Itay Shechter and Luke Moore are fighting what seems a mutually losing battle for the lone spot up top. Starting the last six and notching two assists over that spell, Pablo Hernandez is the most credible contender from the midfield melee. But only making it past the 72 minute mark twice in those six games and costing the same as De Guzman, a midrange 5.9 in FPL (6.5 in Sky Sports), the case for Hernandez might blush in the face of rigourous inquiry.

stilicho I never make predictions and I never will

Got ripped apart for suggestin this in the DZ but here goes..
Any Bertrand/Demel/Guthrie etc owners findin it difficult to get more than 3 DGWers(due to havin just 10 players next week) considered Reina? i'm considerin Migs to Reina for (-4) .. Reina's got good fixtures for a while and should outscore a potential migs 2 pointer (+4) this week and give me 11 players next week.. Also cuellar's back so he could be a cheaper alternative in defense for me over migs.. any takers?

the way i see it migs runs out of steam GW 30 (and i'll be playin Fed next week anyway).. while Reina has mileage in him till the end of the season.. plus i got my WC available to swap him out at some point too since he's so expensive.. i'm almost sold

Good way to get defensive cover, but i`d rather have Johnson for the attacking threat. He might snag you an assist or a goal, Reina doesnt even save penalties anymore.

It depends on pitch time and we frankly don't know who will get what.

I imagine RVP will get 70 mins absolute max, whereas I see Suarez getting 120+.

I'd say it'll be close but it will come down to whether RVP starts on the pitch or on the bench.

Three at the back is a shambles, in terms of Premier League defences Man City are right up there and they cant play it, its a nonsense.

Fifa heads. Have you noticed since the latest transfer update Iturbe and Masi are no longer in the game?

Masi is a Juventus player at Ternana(Terni) on loan but he is no longer there and Iturbe in on loan from Porto > River Plate but again no longer in the game. Anyone know why this is?

I use WPA2 and I never have any issues. It could also be your router's firewall which is blocking your ps3 access to the internet. Google how to check this and if that doesn't work you might have to put your ps3 in the DMZ of your router so it's outside the firewall.

I laugh at anyone who got any DGW players in for a 4 point hit. Barely even a DGW with the blanks and you muck up your team for the following week.

4 players is enough. Even if you don't have Gerrard or Suarez.

You cant really as they all play different roles. Carrick can out-pass any of those other players, but you wouldnt play him in the same role as Oscar. Clevs and Wilshere are both great players, but wilshere is more defensive whilst Clevs is more attacking.

I dont think ive ever seen Wilshere play in a really attacking role, so wont comment to disagree. However, having watched a lot of Cleverly, he is fantastic at creating attacking chances. If his finishing was better/a little luckier perhaps, he could have scored 5/10 goals for England already, and he's only been in the squad for a few games.

For all the praise Wilshere gets, ive never see anything from him that makes me think he is special. He is very committed and has a desire to win, but ive never seen him perform to a level that makes me think he will be anywhere near world class. Every time ive watched him he has put in a few rash tackles, got booked and failed to impact the game. But im no Gooner so cant claim to have watched him week in week out.

I dont know any englishmen able to carry a ball through defenders like the man does. Messi like ball control. And it is his first season back from injury, so he is basically playing with 50% of what he is able to do.

If you're referring to the one two years ago, yes I saw it but dont remember taking any special notice of Wilshere. As I said, I dont watch him enough to know how good or bad he is, Its just that whenever I have seen him, ive never thought that much considering how famed he is. He's bloody good on fifa though, give him that.

Sorry i didn't phrase it right, i mean he has the potential to reach the heights the likes of Rooney and Gerrard have. He is that good. Low centre of gravity, glides past opponents, picks passes. Just needs to add more goals to his game but that will come.

Aye I agree. Just saying he hasn't got a great deal of competition as far as emerging English talent is concerned. There are lots of good young English players about but not too many who ave the potential to be really exceptional imo.

      Carrick
      Wilshere
      Clevz
      Oscar

In my opinion Oscar havent really shown much at all since joining Chelsea. Some might say the same about Clevz, but atleast he`s shown potential to dominate games. Him and Ando at the start of last season was the best CM partnership for the first 5-6 games by a margin, imo. Not that i dont think Oscar is talented, he`s just struggling to adapt it appears. Wilshere is far from overrated, Carrick very underrated by the average supporter.

Honestly it was one of those things where I had to see everything he did. He was so special. I dont know if it's just because Messi has become so abnormally consistent at being brilliant but i dont get the same buzz from watching him as i did Ronaldinho.

Im totally with you. Messi is aboslutely fantastic, i mean he`s probably the best player the world has ever seen by now, and thats saying something. I`ve seen him live a couple times as well, i just never got that same feeling. `Dinho did everything with a smile on his face, you could just tell he loved what he was doing, which is probably what inspired all that fancy trickery and skillage that he came up with. Along with an unbelievable talent. For me, the most enjoyable player to watch, 2nd by Zizou.

My favourite player to watch. Messi is the better player, but no one was as entertaining as Ronaldinho. There's an efficiency to Messi, it's wonderful but he doesn't have the flamboyance and trickery that Ronaldinho had.

This is a contender for the greatest goal I've ever seen:

It may be changing the subject just a tad but does anyone else think that transferring in Gerrard might be little more than chasing points? Looking at the key stats he seems quite a way behind Bale so the recent points for Gerrard may just be a blip.

I'm starting to think that Enrique or Johnson might be a more sensible option if I choose to play 4 double gameweekers

I hadn't seen anyone get stuck in against the Barca midfield trio the way Jacky did. Bossed that game. Been a fan of his since the Bolton days. One of my fav players in the league. He's not been as good since he's back(from the few games i have seen) but he definitely doesn't suck.

Goals alone dont mean anything. Ince was trending on twitter last night because he has scored more goals than Zaha, doesnt stop Zaha being twice the talent Ince is.

Im a Man Utd fan and u just cant compare their stats and say that Wilshere is over-hyped, wilshere is easily a much much better player than cleverley runs the midfield, cleverley has a lot to learnt from wilshere.

You`re mislead, my friend. The thing that makes Bainesy so dangerous is the ability to overlap from the deep. He doesnt take on defenders, he doesnt have skills to do that. As a LF/LW you need trickery and pace. Baines is quick, but not that quick. Its such a different game when you bomb down from that LB compared to beeing stationed 40 yards further up the pitch. Young is clearly Englands best LW, imo. Lennon can only play on the right. Give Oxlade a year or two, he`ll contend.

Liking that. I think it seems logical that Baines would be ideal in that role but in reality I don't think he would be that comfortable there. He is better at initiating the play from LB, linking up with the player in advance and getting beyond him. He doesn't really have a trick to beat the full back he would end up relying on Cole to overlap him most of the time.
